Jason headed down the stairs to the dining room. Yesterday the Kovars had given him some sandwiches to eat before bed, but today would be his first cooked meal in this body. As a chef he was very interested in the food of this world.
"Hello Jason, good morning to you. Are you excited about your lessons today? It is often fun to learn new things." Tabitha called out.
"Good morning to all of you as well. yes I am excited about learning about magic. Currently all I know is how to absorb basic mana particles." Jason had recieved the basic mana cultivation technique from the original Jason's memories, who in turn recieved it from the old warden of the orphanage.
"Ugh, magic is so boring and hard. There is way to much math involved. And the sigils are so hard to get right. " Anna complained from the table.
"Math? Sigils? What do you mean?" Jason asked in confusion.
"You have to use math to control the spell and create the sigil. Every spell besides cantrips has a sigil. Math helps you properly distribute the runes within the sigil. As for a deeper explanation, just wait for your lessons. Tobias will be teaching you and Anna in the greenhouse after breakfast. " Tabitha instructed.
" Thank you Tabitha. Would you mind me asking what's for breakfast?" Jason responded
" Sure thing Jason. We are having water drake's egg omelettes, with fried soft root and orange juice. " Tabitha offered.
"We are eating dragon eggs!" Jason was shocked. He thought back to the fantasy stories of earth and the great dragon slayers and dragon knights. The thought of eating such a ferocious beasts egg was both exciting and terrifying.
" Hahaha, no. It is a water drake. They resemble a drake but are only 3 feet in size. They are more similar to a lizard or crocodile than a dragon. Also real drakes are only a water downed version of a dragon. Besides even if we had a dragon egg to eat, the energy from one would be enough to kill mom and dad much less you and me!" Anna laughed uproariously.
"Lol, sorry about that I was confused. Hey, where are Joseph and Gerald at?" Jason asked, trying to change the from his embarrassing moment.
"Lol? What does that mean? Joseph returned to the Academy last night as break was over and the fall semester will soon begin. And Gerald is going to wipe out a group of bandits that recently sprung up in the east of the March, so he will be gone about a week. " Tabitha said.
"Lol means laugh out loud, I don't remember where I had heard it from before, possibly a book or in the market square. " Jason quickly explained and tried to make an excuse. He would need to try harder to remember that he was no longer on Earth, and to stop using terms and sayings from there. Luckily the memories he recieved allowed Jason to know the language like a native.
At this time the food arrived so they stopped paying attention to Jason. The omelets were amazing and they had a meat inside that tasted like sweet ham that went well with the peppers. The soft roots tasted like hash browns and bacon mixed together, but smelled like roast beef and were a very purple color.

"Runes are the path of power for a mage. The more runes a mage can master the more versatile he or she will be. As a mage apprentice you will only be able to use attributeless mana for spells." Tobias began.
Jason was busy taking notes. While Jess would make sure he didnt forget anything writing things down had always helped him understand things better.
" A mage apprentice can only use a single ringed sigil, a mage acolyte has the capabily to use a double ringed sigil, this trend continues until they reach ascension. After ascending the number of rings decrease to one again but they are significantly stronger and has changed from the mage black to the wizard bronze. It is similar to how a knights black aura, changes to the palidans bronze aura. " Tobias continued to explain.
Jason raised his hand to ask " So is the sigil a part of us or do we summon it with the spell? Also how do we change the runes?"
"Those are some decent questions Jason. For your first one the answer is : When you cast a spell you must visualize the entire sigil before it will absorb your mana and affect the world. These means that the faster and better you visualize the sigil the faster you can, and the better you can, cast the spell. In fact most mages can instant cast spells 2 rings below them and geniuses can instant cast spells one ring below them. A large part of deciding how fast a mage is, is their memory ability. " Tobias answered
"As for your second question you cannot change the runes on an already completed sigil, if you try you will recieve a horrible backlash, that in extreme cases can kill you. You can try to create new spells and practice known ones, when you do memorize the sigil to cast it. If you want to cast a new spell either use your other hand or cancel or finish the previously activated spell. Some mages even teach themselves to cast 3 spells at once; one on each end of their staff and one from their off hand. That is the max someone can do, as splitting your mind to to many things will cause you to make mistakes in the visualizing step, which can lead to backlash. Most people can only make one sigil at a time, at least before becoming a wizard. Even then casting multiple sigil on their level is rare, it is much more common to see them use many lower level, and there for simpler, sigils." Tobias continued.
"Now back to the lessen. Mages of all tiers can only use the basic 4 elements. These elements are; Fire, Air, Earth, Water. There are still the intermediate elements, and supreme elements that we know of. But for today's lessons we will only talk about the subjects pertaining the mage rank. "
"When you become a mage acolyte you can form a spirit pact with a beast. You can train them to become stronger. Whatever their strongest attribute is it will have a bleed over effect. The bleed over percentage is determined by the level of the contract. Low level means that the effect is weak a weak 5%, medium level provides a 15%, high level provides a huge 25%. Most people use a medium level. A low level contract can be removed with no side effects while a medium one will leave you bed ridden for 3-6 months. A high level contract will kill you if you break it. Also you can not do anything to harm your bond or betray them. The reason people break bonds is because beast bloodlines limit their growth potential, which means the beast was a good helper early on but later was dead weight. Mages can only have 1 spirit beasts, Wizards can have 3, I do not know what comes after wizards."
