Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: A sword and a mirror

"Ok, I think I should enter the room with the iron door next. The other two seem a bit more special."

Jack neared the iron door and reached for the handle while being on maximum alert cause his instincts were screaming danger from the two swords drawn on the doorframe. "Come on it's just a painting, a painting can't cut."

And finally, Jack opened the door and entered the room. But the sight that entered his eyes made him feel weird.

"What the hell happened here?"

The room was total chaos, pieces of rusty iron where laying on the ground, bent and broken swords laying on the ground, broken bows with no strings hanging on half shattered walls, work tables turned upside down, broken chairs and torn papers was all there was on the room.

"Either the person who owned this place was really messy or this room was raided before I arrived and someone turned this place upside down. This place looks like an armory more than a room so maybe whoever raided this place before was searching for a weapon or something like that. Maybe I can find something useful."

Jack started searching for anything he could use, but everything in the room was either too old to be used that the moment you touched it it turned to dust or broken pieces of armor, swords and metal.

"There's really nothing in decent shape to be used. Seems like luck is not on my side for this room..."

Just when Jack was going to turn around and exit the room he spotted out of the corner of his eye a table only half destroyed but still standing with one note on top of it. Jack immediately went near the table and read the note.

"Master, I finished the task you asked me to do. I left the weapon in the usual place. I have to say that this has been my best work to this day. If the previous weapon was mortal perfection then this one trascends beyond mortality. I thank Master for giving me the materials and especially the foundation for making this weapon. I understand that it was a questionable request asking for it, but you Master didn't even think it a second time before giving me such responsibility even when there were many voices against it. I believe it has been also thanks to that blind trust that I managed to put my full soul and devotion to the making of this weapon so that I can say that I can die in peace after achieving this work. I hope you find it to your liking and remember to invite me to 3 cups of your best wine and 5 jars of your best beer.

P.S. I think I found some enlightenment thanks to this so I may be travelling to-"

Jack had a pensive face after reading the note. "Well, first of all, the note isn't finished, seems it lacks the last part. Not like I care where the person who wrote this went. And second of all, seems like the person who wrote this made an incredible weapon but... I don't know where the so called "usual place" is and I'm quite sure that this place has been raided already. So I don't think I will find anything no matter what, either that Master took it already or the people who raided this place found it and took it for themselves."

Jack read one last time the note when he found something weird on it. "Why did he want exactly 3 cups of wine and 5 jars of beer? Is this a code or something?"

He looked around the huge room, and saw that the room was divided between different halls. "Heavy armor, medium armor, light armor, swords, bows, spears, daggers and staffs. Exactly three and five just like the note. This surely must be related."

Jack looked more carefully and noticed something. "All the halls seem to converge in one point."

He walked to the point where they converged and just when he stepped one foot on it he heard something below him.

"Tap tap." Jack kicked the ground a bit and noticed that the sound the floor made was different from the rest of the room. "It should be here."

Jack grabbed a piece of random metal that was laying on the ground and started hitting the spot over and over till a loud crack was heard and he could see what was below the ground.

"This is the legendary weapon?"

Jack grabbed the so called legendary weapon and he couldn't help but feel weird.

It was sword, but a sword in such a bad shape that no swordsman would want to use it for shame of others mocking him. The sword seemed to be covered by a layer of rust, and seemed like it would shatter at the minimum contact with any other weapon.

"Well the handle looks quite good and it can be held. But I don't think I can cut anything with this rusty blade."

Jack grabbed the piece of metal and used the sword to try cutting it. And to his surprise the sword sliced the metal like it was butter.

"Oh? It can cut it so easily? Let's try something else then."

Jack grabbed a piece of broken armor and used his sword again. And the same result happened.

"Wow, maybe it's not the best looking weapon or the legendary weapon the note said but it sure can cut. Might as well keep it, I can always replace it in the future."

Jack found a random sheath across the room and kept the sword on it.

"Yeah, I don't want people to laugh at my sword, this way they will see a really nice handle and think I'm a real swordsman with a good sword. Well, this room could have been worse. Let's go to the next one."

Jack exited the room and saw that the golden dust appeared on the iron door the moment he exited and the sense of danger the drawn swords were giving him before was not stronger so he distanced himself quickly from the iron door and went to the room with the beautiful door.

Jack didn't spend too much time looking at the door this time and entered inside.

"Well, just what I imagined with the painting at the entrance, this is just the chambers of a woman. But surely the woman must have some status to have this amazing room."

A beautifully decorated room was what greeted Jack. The room had everything one could imagine, a big bed that even the noblest person would want to sleep in, many cupboards made of materials Jack had never seen before on Earth, a dressing table with a big mirror on the front, a huge bathroom that would put even the best of the antique roman baths to shame and many more.

"Yeah, a woman with really high status lived here. Not even the queen of England back on Earth would sleep in such a room. I wonder if there's something I could take that are not clothes cause no matter how luxurious and beautiful are all those clothes I won't wear those and it's not like I can carry them either."

Jack looked around the room and noticed something on top of the dressing table. A small hand mirror that was beautifully decorated, made of materials unknown to him and some weird letters, if you could call them that, seemed to also decorate the mirror.

"These letters look like runes of those of fantasy videogames..."

Jack didn't know why but something about that mirror attracted him. There was like a little whisper to his soul that was telling him to take it. And something deep inside him seemed to beat faster and faster the longer he looked at the mirror.

"I will keep it for now, it doesn't weigh too much and it's kind of small."

The moment he put away the mirror, whatever was beating deep inside him stopped doing it abruptly like it was content that the mirror was taken and put away.

Jack didn't notice any of this but he had the feeling that he made the right choice keeping the mirror. This was the first crucial choice Jack made in his new life, and he could have never guessed how much impact this choice would have in his future. If at that time he had decided to not take the mirror and leave that beautiful room with empty hands, maybe he would have never been able to forgive himself.

And just like that, Jack left the room and went for the last and most intimidating door.
