Chapter 1 - Letter

"As I think back to the beginning I could not help but reminisce about how good of a life you had back then. You should've never played that game but..." As the man talked he couldn't help but smile. "I am glad you did." The figure who was in all black was standing out in front of an apartment complex. He could be seen putting a black envelope within one of the mailboxes. "Fair well, and good luck." He came and gone as if not even there.

--------------------

My name is Kirk Dun. I'm 22 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Rockysville, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for Yoshikages law firm, and I get home every day by 7:30 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone. I play a game called Thirty in which you are supposed to survive on an island and survive for 30 days. I've played this game for many years and have seen all of the updates. I pride myself on knowing how to survive on my own however, I have not once gone camping let alone actually stay outside for 30 days. I, unfortunately, have no time for camping, or else I would have gone ages ago. The law firm I work at is a new one and I have only started my training/shadowing behind the boss a couple of months ago. I'm usually having to deal with all the papers that my boss doesn't want to do. Adding onto all the schoolwork I still have to do in university it makes me feel like I should just give up everything and pursue being a W*lmart employee. I would've done it ages ago however, both my parents and my siblings are in the lawyer business and I would definitely be disowned if I went down that path. Even though people working at W*lmart are getting $16/hr. I've already decided to grit my teeth so I can finish this awful job so I can live more peacefully in my home. The only thing giving me comfort these days is a mobile game called Thirty. You start by having to pick up 7 things from the Survival Shop. In this shop, there are many things to choose from. To tarps, matches, flashlights, bottles, and even moose feces. When you get your items you are thrown out onto a random island and you have to use materials from the island to survive for 30 days. There are points you can gain from building certain things for a better high score. Although I've been playing for many years I still haven't gotten number one on the global leaderboard. The best score I've ever gotten is 7th. Only about 100,000 people are playing globally. That is still an astronomically big number for a game that is on the same device on which you call your boss. As I was heading to my front door I casually looked at my mailbox and what I saw had surprised me. Inside was a dark grey letter with a bright shining red seal on it. The picture on the seal was a palm tree cut horizontally.

----------------------

As he had noticed such a weird letter in his mailbox he flipped it over to confirm it was his. He had confirmed that it was his because it said 'To Kirk Dun From A Fellow Survivalist.' He gave a weird look at it before walking inside with the letter in hand. When he walked in he did his usual routine of getting out of his dress attire and warming up some leftovers from the previous night. As he grabbed his dinner he went into his office where he usually sits and decided to look at the rest of the mail first before looking at the gray letter. "Ugh, they need to stop giving me these stupid car ad magazines. I obviously don't want a car so why still send them." As Kirk was complaining to himself he couldn't help but sigh at the amount of useless garbage that had piled up in his mailbox that day. "Ah, finally something not useless!" As he pulled out a couple of envelopes his face dropped as he exclaimed. "What the heck! Why am I getting so excited for some stupid bills!" He rested his face on the desk still pondering why he had so much excitement for some stupid mail. Until he realized that he hadn't opened up the mysterious letter yet. He thought "If this is just another crappy scam then I'm prepared to burn that whole company to the ground!" He looked at the paper that he had pulled out of the envelope with a perplexing gaze. "This paper is really fancy, It's like that old papyrus paper that I see In museums!" As he opened the paper up he saw beautiful calligraphy writing as if made by an empress. The letter read,

----------------------

"Dear Kirk Dun, you know of the game Thirty right? At 8:00 PM you will get a notification from the game saying, 'A message to all survivalists you have 4 hours to gather everything you need for a magical adventure! (Caution: Everything weighing over 7lbs is forbidden and items making the load more than the prerequisite weight will be cast aside with no return) I await your arrival!' When you get that notification do not panic. Gather food, water, a first aid kit, and anything else you might feel useful in the middle of the wilderness. If you check further within the envelope there will be a baggy with a USB drive in it. The drive contains multiple files that are required for survival. Put all those files onto your computer and then store them on your phone. I also know that you will be able to store all of those files on your phone because you have an iAvocado XV with 200 GB of storage. Put everything into one bag and MAKE sure the bag is less than 7lbs when you are finished. You will definitely regret it if it's over 7lbs. The final thing before I tell you the reasons why you should believe me, whenever the countdown finishes and you get put in the wilderness don't panic and just remember the game you had played for 5 years every day.

----------------------

Now, the reasons why you should, believe me, are as follows. At 8:07 PM your mother will call you asking when you will visit. Your neighbor will fall down the stairs at 8:14 PM. At 8:34 PM you will have to end up going number 2 in your bathroom. 8:47 PM your breaker will trip and you'll end up finding a worn-down doll in the basement of your apartment complex whilst trying to fix the breaker. 9:05 PM you will be ding dong ditched by the neighbor kids who live 2 doors on the right. If you don't end up believing me by then, then you aren't gonna believe anything else I would say. If you trust me then do all of this before 12:00 AM. If not then this will be our final meeting. Fair well, and good luck."
