Chapter 2 - Preparing

Kirk looked at the letter dumbfounded. He quickly looked at the clock and saw it was 7:58 PM and decided to wait. When it was 8:00 PM Kirk heard a weird alarm coming from his phone. As he opened it up his face darkened. Thirty: A message to all survivalists you have 4 hours to gather everything you need for a magical adventure! (Caution: Everything weighing over 7lbs is forbidden and items making the load more than the prerequisite weight will be cast aside with no return) I await your arrival!' Kirk couldn't believe his eyes as he stared at his screen. "It actually got sent out!" Kirk couldn't help but be taken back as he recalled the letter. "Calm down, calm down, I gotta think of this logically. What if it's not actually the app sending me this but some random number. This has to be some funny joke or prank." He couldn't help but laugh out loud "Haha very funny you got me! The prank was very good and you totally fooled me!" As he was exclaiming and yelling to himself he heard another notification from his phone. He looked at it and was even more shocked. On the screen were letters saying that his mom was calling him. As he glanced at the clock he indeed saw that it was 8:07 PM just like the letter said. Kirk answered and heard his mom rant for several minutes about her life and how he should come and visit her. He could only respond with "Yes, I'll come soon." When he finally got his mom to hang up he couldn't help but look at the clock and it was already 8:13 PM. He couldn't help but remember that something was supposed to happen within the next minute. Then suddenly he heard a commotion from the stairs outside his apartment. He looked down the stairs and couldn't help but gawk. Mr. Johnson, the neighbor who lives above him, was a middle-aged man who works a day job and never talks to any of his neighbors. That same Mr. Johnson was sprawled on the ground at the bottom of the steps. Once Kirk was out of his daze he hurriedly went down the stairs to help the man up. Kirk had asked what happened and Mr. Johnson explained that he had gone to get his laundry from the basement when he tripped and fell down the stairs. After Kirk helped the guy up he proceeded back to his own house. His head was buzzing from the mental shock he had received in the last 15 minutes. Kirk decided to trust the letter for now. So, he took the USB and plugged it into his laptop.

----------------------

There were multiple files within it. He looked at the first file named 'Wordipedia' and was surprised because he knew of this name. Wordipedia was the site with the most information in the world. The site has over 6.5 million articles and contains over 4 billion words in total. His eyes couldn't help but bulge when he saw that the compressed file only had 20 GB. "I can't believe almost all of the knowledge in the world can be fit on a single 20 Gb file." He couldn't help but sigh after thinking that. He started the transfer of those files and went to see the other files. One of the other files was called 'Arts' however, he couldn't get in because there was a restriction that won't open for another 61 days. Kirk still decided to transfer it. The 3rd file was one called 'Books'. He found a couple of files which were titles of books. There was 'Art of War' by Sun Tzu, 'Animal Farm' by George Orwell, 'The Communist Manifesto' by Karl Marx, 'Anarchists Cookbook' by William Powell, just to name a few. He was quite surprised when he saw all of the different books. "This must've taken many months to compile all of these together. However, why would they know to compile all of these files together?" Kirk could only give up thinking about it because he had the sudden urge to use the bathroom and so he couldn't help but look at the letter. While he was waiting for the files to download he decided to gather the other stuff that he might need. He could tell from the letter that he would be thrown into a wilderness in the middle of nowhere and probably have to fend for himself. He figured that only a small duffel bag would work. Kirk went to his kitchen to see what kind of stuff he would be able to bring. He first grabbed a water bottle and filled it up with water. The next thing he got were some cans of beans that had been sitting in his pantry for the last couple of months. He also grabbed a kitchen knife. Feeling the bag getting a little heavy he decided to try and weigh his bag. When he got to the bathroom there was a little glass scale standing behind the toilet. Kirk pulled it out and put the bag on top of it. The number that was displayed was only 2.8 lbs. "Wow, I can hold a lot more than I thought. It seems I should be thinking more resourcefully then."

----------------------

He then looked on his sink and saw something that would be definitely needed. "Toothbrush and toothpaste is a must. Toilet paper also." While grabbing the toilet paper he remembered that he had some first aid stuff below his sink. "We've got bad aids, hydrogen peroxide, some gauze', tweezers, rash cream, wipes, and painkillers. That should hold me off." Then after resigning everything and seeing that he still had plenty of weight to spare, he went to his room to see if there was anything good in there. When he walked into the room he went to his drawers first. Kirk grabbed a pair of pants and shorts and also grabbed his special compass. The compass was given to him when he was 7 by his older cousin. It was just like any other compass but it had a small purple gem within the middle. It had purple-like veins coming out of it and swirling within the compass. Kirk had always found that gem a little odd but had never said anything about it since it seemed like his cousin really cared a lot about the compass. He would always say to keep it on him and Kirk would always keep it on himself. However, after many years he decided to put it in a safe box so he didn't accidentally lose it. It has been 2 years since then and this is the first time he had taken a look at it. "This really brings back memories." As he was looking at the compass he noticed that all of his lights had turned off. "Dang! That stupid letter is jinxing me all of the time!" Kirk ran to his computer to see that everything had been turned off. He could only smile bitterly as he started walking down to the basement. While he was going down he noticed that no one else had come out of their apartments, he thought that the Sender was just messing with him now. He knew that a creepy doll was awaiting him down there already but he still couldn't help but be a little creeped out. "Calm down, it's only a little doll, nothing to be scared of, nothing to jump at." While he was reciting many holy verses he reached the basement.

----------------------

Kirk slowly opened the door and walked in. Opening up his phone flashlight he looked around. There were multiple moldy pipes and in many corners were mansions full of spiders. As he was creeping around he had gotten to the back of the basement. He opened up the dust-ridden breaker and found his switch. What he noticed though was that there was a note on his switch. It read, "Text me when you get THERE." On the back was a number, he decided to pocket and flipped the switch. He finally sighed relief as he was walking back. However, what he saw in the corner made him jump. It was a human-sized shape looking lifeless in the corner. He couldn't help but laugh dryly after he noticed that it was just the creepy doll that the letter mentioned, "Couldn't you have made it a little more like an actual doll." While he was talking to himself he noticed that the doll really did look real. It had a sad look on her face. If you looked closely at it you could also see black stars within its eyes as if they were real pupils. Kirk would've totally thought that was a dead body if not for the obvious stuffing coming out of her arm. After returning to his room he turned back on his computer. When he went to restart the downloads he noticed a new file was within the USB.
