Chapter 16 - Assassins' Flee

An unexpected turn of events sent shockwaves through the already tense environment as it reached its climax just as the tension in the clearing reached its highest point. Our renegade tomb raider took advantage of the opportunity offered by the commotion. His fast thoughts and determination transferred into swift action as he unholstered his blaster and pushed himself into a full-on charge at the trio of assassins. His objective was to eliminate them as quickly as possible.

Immediately, Kyn's instincts took over, and he precisely aimed his heavenly revolver weapon at Chris, who had suddenly become a threat to both sides. As Bertha flew closer to the gathering pandemonium, her ethereal form blazed brightly, serving as a beacon of caution and worry for those around her.

"Stop fooling around? They have her on their side," said Kyn as Gaia hadn't yet moved from her position even when they threatened to leave her be.

Turns out Chris hadn't yet called out Kyn's bluff on trying to walk away, as they didn't have enough manpower to fight of the 'rogue' assassins.

But Chris was unfazed, his desire being driven by a mix of desperation and cleverness on his part. He was aware that the three expert assassins were far superior to him, but he had one momentary ally in the form of the element of surprise and fear of the deity that plagued the assassins.

Drax, Zephyr, and Lyra reacted to the increasing intensity of the charge with a combination of surprise and preparation. Drax's pupils constricted as he took in the figure coming at him, his reflexes having been trained through years of battle. The look of anticipation that flashed across Zephyr's face was mirrored by Lyra's hand as it moved automatically towards her weapon.

Drax issued the following command, "Prepare for combat!", This made Lyra curse but still took out her short silver dagger.

However, Chris's charge remained unwavering. Despite the overwhelming odds against him, the urgency of his situation bolstered his determination.

In the midst of the mayhem, Gaia's facial expression changed from one of fun to one that was a combination of panic and comprehension. She recognised the risk that Chris's charge posed to both sides, as it put her current transporter in jeopardy, and had the potential to exacerbate the situation further. Leave alone Kyn being just a newcomer to individuals who'd been in the game for over a decade.

Even though it was tinged with desperation, her voice managed to penetrate the tense atmosphere. A brief respite that provided an opportunity for a different ending was afforded by the moonlight's appearance, which produced a short glow of reason upon the scene.

The heavenly revolver pistol continued to be pointed at Chris while Kyn's fingers twitched in anticipation of the decision that was about to be made.

As much as he wanted to attack the assassins, Chris was the one who provoked them in the end, which caused a rift. Man, why do you have to be so hardheaded? he thought to himself, He had finally found a man he could let Gaia play with and relieve himself over her shenanigans, but now the idiot wanted to die. To be sincere, he didn't mind the attention he received from the clone, but the biggest issue was the goddess that had sent him. If he fell for her, he would literally become a walking deadman, but now he had a chance. He could play matchmaker and hand over that cross to the idiot, but it seems the idiot had better Ideas.

Just before the chaos erupted, Kyn tested his enhanced strength and agility. It was as though his movements blurred as he shifted his weight and zipped over to where Gaia was standing. He had been overcome with a surge of purpose and sprang into rapid action. His training, both as a hunter and the military drills that he had been through, kicked in with a sense of innate urgency. This was the case whether he was hunting or in the military.

The onslaught of assaults launched by Zephyr, which were fueled by mistrust and the general anarchy of the situation, came at him with an unrelenting fury. Kyn was able to successfully traverse the onslaught because of his improved reflexes, which allowed his body to smoothly dodge and evade the punches. Every action was meticulously planned, and his dexterity and sharp wit were on full display at every stage.

When Zephyr realised that Kyn wasn't launching an attack but rather positioning himself between the charging Chris and the three, his eyes widened and his mouth dropped open in shock. The motivation for Kyn's actions became abundantly clear: he was trying to position them behind him in order to shield Gaia from the potentially cataclysmic confrontation that was about to take place.

The Zephyr said, taking a pause for a few seconds, "Wait!"

The speed with which Kyn moved was evidence of both his determination and his capacity to adjust under stressful situations. His moves were a fluid symphony of evasion that defied the odds, and they matched the intricate dances of fighting drills that he had practised in the past.

After Kyn successfully positioned himself between Chris's charge and the three assassins, a tight silence descended upon the clearing as the situation became increasingly tense. As Gaia became aware of Kyn's goals, the expression of relief and appreciation that could be seen in her eyes was priceless.

Gaia, in a hushed voice, "Thanks, Sir. Knight."

The glow that Bertha emitted became more intense, and it reflected the tension that was hanging in the air. The moonlight, a silent observer of the unfolding events, illuminated the scene objectively.

Bertha, "The future of this moment is uncertain. We have to figure out how to defuse this potentially fatal scenario."

A sense of unpredictability and the potential for conflict now permeated the area. As friendships and goals intertwined in the intricate web of their interconnected destinies, it seemed that individuals' decisions, made in the moment, would significantly influence the trajectory of their destinies.

Drax seeing that Kyn had got Gaia off his back saw the opportunity to flee, calling back his comrades. Utilizing his clocking talent the three fell back into the shadows.
