Chapter 3 - «3»

Crystal's POV :

I remember when I was younger and I complained to my grandmother about a book I read although I had yet to finish it. My older sister came up then, and proclaimed "She dies in the end." I was shocked that she would ruin such a great book for me, but before I could my grandmother spoke first "We all die in the end, some peoples endings are sooner than the rest and we can't stop that."

I didn't finish the book after that and my sister never told me anything else. My grandmothers words kept replaying in the end, and yeah we all die in the end it's human nature, it's what keeps us from falling out of orbit, or screwing up the space time continuum, but the thought of death scared me beyond compare.

I stared at my homework that lay on the desk trying to understand it when a sudden buzz of my phone snapped me out of my thoughts. I fished the phone under the pile of books, reading the text on the screen.

Lukey

Meet me at the park later tonight? I need to tell you something :)

I smiled replying immediately

What time?

7

See you then

[...]

I locked the door, hiding the key under the doormat and walked towards the park minutes away from my house.

When I got there, I saw nothing but a dimly lit tree  that Luke and I carved out names on around 2 months ago. I smiled at the fond memory and sat on the bench, pulling out my phone and texting him.

30 minutes had passed and there was no sign of him anywhere. I huffed in annoyance, pulling my sweater closer to me and pulling out my phone texting him

Where are you it's been half an hour?!

I'm so so sorry, I was dragged to this party by Andy and I've been here for hours

fine I'm heading home.

I ignored all the texts from him after I sent that one

The ringing from my phone wouldn't stop, who could be calling at 2:30AM? I reached for my phone and answered it, not bothering to look at the caller I.D

"Hello Luke?" I asked frantically

"No ma'am this isn't Luke. This is officer Park. I'm sorry but Luke's been in a terrible accident, he died in the scene" I froze, the entire world around me did too.

"Hello?" I swallowed my breath, my hand gripping the fabric of my sheets. "Yes I'm here" my breathing became even heavier and silent tears rolled down my cheeks.

"We did find something in the car, it was addressed to you. If you can come by the police station you can pick it up" I nodded, then realized he couldn't see me

"Ofcourse" the line went dead and I dropped my phone from my grasp. My hand was still clutching the fabric in desperate need to hold onto something. There was throbbing in my head, and my heart actually ached, my vision became blurred with tears and my throats was sore with all the held in sobs.

Finally, I let them go, the choked out sobs, all the pain I've felt in the last five minutes, it was unbearable. I never thought pain could come in waves so large, that numbness and pain could create such a heartbreaking concoction.

Then I thought about what my grandmother told me. "We all die in the end. Some peoples endings are sooner than the rest, we can't stop that" and I couldn't help but think about how soon his ending came. I would give anything for him to be alive right now.

The funeral wasn't long after his death. I sat with his parents and siblings as they told me about how amazing he was.

I stood at the beverage station with Darcy, his best friend as we both went on about the things we wished we had of his but then I remembered the phone call from officer Park, he said he found something addressed to me in Luke's car.

[...]

I arrived at the station fifteen minutes later and rushed into the building, heading for the front desk.

"Hi, I'm looking for something. I-it was from a car crash that happened a few days ago, Officer Park said it was addressed to me and I-I really need it" the woman looked up to me with a calm smile and stood up. She retreated to the back, and a man in a police uniform took her place.

"May I help you?" I nodded, reading his name tag labeled 'officer park'

"Officer Park...you called about a car crash from a few days ago, said there was something addressed to me" he smiled nodding and pulling out a box from under the counter with my name on it.

"There you are, and I'm really sorry for your loss" I nodded muttering a small "me too" and took the package back to my car. I sat in the drivers seat and carefully undid the bow the bow around it, tossing it to the passengers side and taking the off the box. What I saw broke my heart all over again.

A dozen of, now dead, white daisies with a card attached to it that said "I know you love daisies and now you know that I love you.", a mixtape with all of my favorite songs on it, all of which Luke and I would dance along to while cooking in the kitchen or cleaning around the house, and the last thing was a promise ring with a piece if paper catching my eye. I picked up the little slip reading it

Roses are red

Grass is green

I know it's a little early

But will you go to prom with me?
