Chapter 8 - Strengthening Defense

After the meteor shower, there was no joy in the World Channel anymore. Instead, there was only sorrow and worries.

Some had their arms broken, some had their fingers and toes frozen, and some were even dead.

In fact, in this situation where there was no medicine, living might not be much better than death. They still had to continue enduring the pain.

Dawn came. Zhang Bei took out the energy device to charge it and sat beside it, sighing in his heart.

If I didn't pick up the flints and didn't change to the tent, I would probably be the one dying in this vast space, Zhang Bei thought helplessly.

Suddenly, Zhang Bei realized something. "Since the previous small meteor shower seemed to be caused by the explosion of a small asteroid, there are more than one small asteroids in space…"

Zhang Bei was terrified. This time, it was a small asteroid far away from him, but he still had to expend so much effort to survive through it. What if it was a large asteroid close to him next time?

Zhang Bei made up his mind to strengthen his defense.

He first carefully observed the tent, wanting to see if there was any place he could strengthen.

He touched the canvas of the tent and rubbed it. He found that there were three layers.

"If there are three layers of canvas on the outside, can I fill it with something to strengthen it?" Zhang Bei thought.

He was extremely troubled. "If only there were some iron boards, or even wooden planks. But there's nothing here."

Then, Zhang Bei saw the soil on the ground beside him and thought of a plan.

Previously, he did not have any tools. Now that he had them, it was much easier to do these tasks.

Zhang Bei first dug the soil with the shovel from the greenhouse, then poured water over it and stirred it into mud.

"In the past, houses were built with steel and concrete. I wonder if this mud can be used." Zhang Bei pondered as he stirred.

Zhang Bei stirred the mud and took a piece of cardboard, spreading the mud evenly on both sides of the board.

"Let's see how strong it is after it's dried." Zhang Bei put down the mud board in his hand.

"Rumble", Zhang Bei's stomach growled.

"Let's eat something first. It'll take some time to dry." Zhang Bei walked to the tent and boiled water. Then, he walked to the storage room.

Zhang Bei pulled open the door to the storage room and took a packet of instant noodles and two ham sausages. He thought for a moment and then took two loaves of bread.

"I have to eat my fill. I still have to do manual labor later," Zhang Bei thought helplessly.

Who would have thought that his miserable life of working 9-9 everyday for 6 days a week on Earth would carry to here as well.

The water boiled. Zhang Bei skillfully opened the cup noodles and threw them in.

After the noodles were done, Zhang Bei took a paper box and used it as a table. He sat on the ground and started eating.

Many earthlings had the habit of eating while looking at their phones. But in space, no one had a phone, so Zhang Bei could only turn on the World Channel.

"This is too scary… I went to search for supplies just now… There is so much blood and flesh outside the protective barrier."

"I saw a head floating outside… Its eyes were still open…"

"I really cried for a long time… Why are humans suffering like this?"

"I wonder how my parents are… Are they still alive?"

"I really want to go home."

"I shouldn't have talked back to Mom when I went to work."

"If I have the chance, I must tell Mom that I love her…"

Zhang Bei sighed.

Humans were always like this. Only when things were irreversible would they think about how wonderful everything they once had was.

"The wanton felling of trees and the indiscriminate hunting might have been the reason for the Earth's collapse."

Zhang Bei slowly spoke on the World Channel.

Immediately, the World Channel fell silent.

After a long while, Zhang Bei said, "Live on, there is hope."

"Yes, we have to survive!"

"I'll go search for resources now! If I survive, I'll definitely find my parents!"

"Me too! There's hope if we survive!"

"Thank you, brother! Thank you for reminding us!"

"Survive! We have to survive!"

"Nothing is impossible!"

This was the nature of humans. Even if they stepped on blood and tears, they could still straighten their backs and charge towards the future of light!

Zhang Bei's eyes reddened slightly as he turned off the World Channel.

Yes, there is hope if I survive. I must survive!

Zhang Bei clenched his fists.

After dinner, he went outside to look at the mud boards.

He touched it and realized that it had dried. He picked up a piece and weighed it.

"It's heavy enough." Zhang Bei touched the mud board. "I wonder how hard it is."

He picked up a stone and threw it at the board.

"As expected…" Zhang Bei smiled bitterly.

Although the weight of the mud board was not bad, its hardness was basically zero. Once the stone hit it, the mud board immediately broke into pieces.

"I still have to find sand, gravel, and a binding agent." Zhang Bei opened the Exchange Platform to see if anyone was selling these things.

The first few pages were still about clothes. Zhang Bei took a look and saw a military jacket. He thought there could be more cold days in the future. He opened the exchange interface.

"You there, bro?"

"Yes. You want to buy the down jacket?"

"Yes, how much?"

"I want water. Three days worth of water."

"I can only give you 1L of water."

"1L isn't enough, at least 1.5L."

"Deal."

Zhang Bei checked the transaction. Three 500ml bottles of water disappeared, and a military jacket was lying on the ground.

He picked up the military coat. It was sewn with a waterproof cloth, so he didn't have to worry about getting wet.

The innermost layer was a thick layer of cashmere, and the clothes were filled with cotton.

Zhang Bei weighed the dress and found that it was about 6.7 pounds.

He put away the jacket and continued browsing the Exchange Platform.

After browsing a few more pages, Zhang Bei saw someone selling sand and gravel.

Zhang Bei was extremely excited. He quickly opened the exchange interface.

"Are you online? What is your price for this?"

"Friend, don't say anymore. This thing almost killed me. There were a few bags of things that suddenly fell from the sky. At first, I thought they were food, but when I saw them, they were all sand." The other party nagged, "How about this? Give me something to eat. If you have anything to eat, let's trade."

Zhang Bei thought for a while. "How about three pieces of bread and three bottles of water for a bag?"

The other party hesitated for a moment. "Sure, I have five bags in total."

Zhang Bei exchanged 15 loaves of bread and 15 bottles of water. Then, five bags of sand and gravel appeared before him.

"These are the raw materials for making concrete." Zhang Bei opened a bag and dug with his hand.

"I still lack a binding agent." Zhang Bei flipped through the Exchange Platform. "If there's no binding agent, there's no way to make them stick together."

Zhang Bei searched for a long time but couldn't find any binding agent. However, he found something that made him extremely excited.
