Chapter 13 - Useless Treasures

The dwarf returned the box to Zhang Bei after appraising the items.

Zhang Bei took it and looked at the result. He was both excited and afraid.

Black Hole Civilization: A type of growth agent—Green: Enhances plant growth, increases plant characteristics and abilities, reduces growth time. Blue: Enhances animal growth, enhances animal characteristics and abilities, reduces growth time (There is a chance that this creature will change its genes, irreversible).

Zhang Bei was in disbelief.

Seeing the effect of the red liquid, he felt fear.

Red: Promotes human growth. Specifically, rapid growth in a convenient trait. (There is a chance to change the human gene, irreversible)

Zhang Bei left the Appraisal Center and swallowed.

"Individual Civilization, Green Civilization, and Black Hole Civilization… The green civilization only developed plant growth agents, but the black hole civilization… can change genes…" Zhang Bei was stupefied.

"What does changing genes mean?" Zhang Bei thought carefully.

"Change my hand? My feet? My stomach? Or my brain?" The more Zhang Bei thought about it, the more dangerous it seemed. He took out the green test tube, while locking the blue and red in the small box.

He put the box in the corner and pressed it under many supplies.

There was still a lot of diluted growth agent from earlier left, so Zhang Bei watered the cabbages, cucumbers, and tomatoes that he had planted before.

After a while, the wilting sprouts suddenly turned sharp and emerald green.

First was the tomatoes. They began to grow branches and leaves before growing crazily upwards.

When it was about two meters long, the tomatoes bloomed with many white flowers.

But even when the flowers wilted, there were no tomatoes.

Zhang Bei was puzzled. He suspected that there was a problem with the tomato seeds, so he went to observe the cucumber. He found that the cucumber had also bloomed and fallen, but it did not bear fruits.

"What's wrong with it?" Zhang Bei looked at the seeds carefully and couldn't see any problems.

Then, Zhang Bei looked at the cabbage.

Hmm, what a good cabbage.

A one-meter-long cabbage.

Zhang Bei casually plucked a small piece of cabbage leaf and stuffed it into his mouth.

"Delicious!" The word delicious seemed to be the only thing in his mind!

The cabbages on Earth would more or less have some earthy taste if eaten raw. Furthermore, there were many fibers at the bottom, so it did not taste good when chewed.

However, Zhang Bei broke off another leaf of the cabbage. It was still so delicious that he was speechless.

"The leaves are very crisp and tender. It bursts with juice when bitten. There are almost no fibers at the bottom either. Once bitten, the juice will fill your mouth. You don't need to chew much to swallow it."

Zhang Bei closed his eyes and enjoyed the joy the cabbage brought him.

"So why can't tomatoes and cucumbers bear fruits!!!" Zhang Bei was exasperated!

He took out a cucumber and tomato seed and planted them in the flower pots again.

After watering with the growth agent, Zhang Bei stood aside and observed carefully.

After a while, the cucumbers and tomatoes grew shoots and branches.

"It's blooming." Zhang Bei stared at each flower.

After a while, the flowers still wilted, but the fruits still did not appear.

Zhang Bei thought for a long time and opened each flower.

Suddenly, he thought of something. "Is it because there are no bees!?"

Although bees had always been a loved and hated thing on Earth, their job as pollen carriers was an important part of the setting fruits.

Zhang Bei went to get a pair of chopsticks and tied a piece of paper over its ends.

He repeated the process. He first planted the seeds in the flower pot, watered them with the diluted growth agent, and waited for the flowers to bloom.

He stared at the plants intently. When the flowers bloomed, he used chopsticks whose ends were tied with paper to collect the pollen.

He dabbed the pollen on the female petals.

One after another, he finally placed pollen in every flower.

After a while, Zhang Bei saw fruits growing.

About fifteen minutes later, the tomatoes and cucumbers were ripe.

Zhang Bei looked at the bent branches, the tomatoes and cucumbers that were the same size as his head, and grinned.

He plucked a tomato and bit into it. The juice splattered on Zhang Bei's face.

He looked at the thin tomato skin and was stunned.

"This is so, so delicious!" Zhang Bei took a bite after another. Soon, he finished the entire tomato.

He burped and rubbed his stomach, revealing a satisfied smile.

"I will eat the cucumber tonight." Zhang Bei looked at the plants that were growing quite well and turned to go to the tent.

He had eaten an entire tomato and no longer had the appetite to eat, so he lay in the tent, opened the door and window, and began to browse the world channel.

"Didn't someone say something was moving in space yesterday?!"

"It's me. What's wrong?!"

"I heard it too! And I saw it! It was a huge snake!"

"What???? A huge snake???!"

"Yes! And those eyes the size of my head! They kept looking at me! I didn't dare to sleep for the entire night!"

"But what I saw was something with legs like a spider's! Its legs were as tall as me!"

"Are you sure it's not an illusion?"

"I… I also heard the sound, but I didn't dare look. I used a box to cover myself."

"Is there really a space monster?"

"Could it be a mutated creature?"

These words stirred up a thousand waves in Zhang Bei's heart.

"If all the humans on Earth are assigned to the asteroids, what about the animals?"

"Could the animals have arrived into space directly and adapted to the environment?"

Zhang Bei was afraid.

If that was the case, cats and dogs would be as big as humans.

It would be fine if it was a herbivore like cattle or sheep, but a carnivore…

Humans would probably become their food.

Zhang Bei came back from his thoughts and realized that he was drenched in cold sweat.

"It seems like I have to strengthen the defenses again." He sighed.

"Maybe I can have a bodyguard to look after my resources? That would be even better," thought Zhang Bei.

Little did he know that his words would soon come true. He would soon face an even greater crisis, but after this crisis, he would obtain a huge opportunity.

Zhang Bei lay for a while and was about to fall asleep when he suddenly saw the detector emit a blue light.

He sat up.

"What is it this time?" His eyes shone.
