Chapter 39 - 38 SAINTS

Ambition is what pushes a man to his limit and most of the time ambition is the vehicle that takes many men to their end and it hurts me as thoughtful as father was he couldn't dodge the bullet. I don't understand why he turned on Saints when he had everything to lose? it's not sensible to me. I said.

If you must know one thing about father, he calculates everything he does and sees the outcome before he makes any move.

What are you trying to say? Do you mean he saw his death coming?

He saw a lot of things and even his death and he was prepared for it. He was already dying for some time now and towards the point of his sudden death all his plans were in motion but I thought he had more time and so did he.

Did you think he was killed?

After a proper investigation, as they say, they concluded he died of natural course, a heart attack they said. They also told everyone he had a heart condition he's been suffering from and he told no one. Mary confirmed it. It is possible that's what he told her, he wouldn't want anyone to question his sanity.

There's another story isn't there? I asked.

Father was dying, yes but, not from a heart condition. He was diagnosed with cancer. Brain cancer it was, and the doctors said due to the place the cancer is positioned in his brain it will be painful but quick, he had just six weeks left.

Why didn't you say anything?

Because I know it was murder and if I say anything to contradict what has been said then I too will be killed.

Father is dead already, why come for us?

It's not as simple as you would hope, a lot of people wanted him dead and they paid a lot of money to make sure he died and stay dead, I did too.

The air was thin, and the atmosphere quiet and cold. All I could do was sit, watch her sip her whiskey and she appears she's not to even bothered, I got up from my sit still silent and walked to the table between us, picked up the bottle of whiskey. I looked at her again and this time she looked at my face. She has a dark side but this time I saw guilt underneath the fear, her face was almost normal but I know these things. In silence, I walked to the bar and picked up a glass and poured a fool glass looked at her again and walked to the table. This time all I could see was fear in her face, she couldn't hide it anymore but for some reason, she remained silent. I dropped the bottle on the table and walked to the place I once sat and sit down. Why did you want him dead? I asked.

I thought you were going to kill me from your reaction, if only looks could kill, I wanted to run.

That feeling is normal, why are you not running?

You strick me as a person who values information and reason, you only act when you have no choice. and I was right. You are like him in that sense.

What were your reasons? I asked.

I had none. but his reason was that I would be the last if it comes to the worst.

What do you mean?

Father paid for his own assassination with my name, he said it would keep me safe after he was gone because of something he was going to leave behind for me.

And what was that?

The position of being the company's accountant, I think.

The man was sick in the head.

He was. we both laughed.

So you knew he was going to give you the position? I asked.

I knew he was going to leave something important for me but I had no idea what it was or what it could be. It is very possible that the position of an accountant is not what he meant.

Do you happen to know who else wanted him dead?

As I said, I don't know all the players but there is this chief Balogu, this man happens to be the father of Sandra, he was a close friend to the family for years and now he's getting more richer since the death of father. Everything points to him as a suspect but I don't know for sure.

Is there anyone else?

For that, I have to make some calls. she said.

I still don't get what this has to do with us?

One question at a time, you once asked where did all the money go? well, the simple explanation is, it vanished.

How?

Before the death of father all the company's properties and assets of the Osimhens were regarded as one company. That way nothing can be traced back to us and if questions are asked by the government, we can easily come out with an explanation, if the government decide to continue to investigate, it will take them at least twelve years to uncover anything dirty. But before that, Saints must have made some calls and everything will go back to normal like it never even happened. Now, things have changed. The properties are separated and the money in-between these companies are lost in some file. Everything has been taken care of even before the will was read. Saints didn't like this arrangement that father had planned which is one of the many reasons they wanted him dead. And that is the same reason they are killing the children of the Osimhens family.

The deed has already been done, what do they really want?

They want things to go back to the way it was, they plan to do that by killing all the children who are not on board and after reemerge the companies.

But that's insane.

It is, but it is the only way they can go forward. That way things are less complicated for them and for us.

So the money is not in your possession?

Truthfully, no.

Do you think the last accountant had something to do with it?

Of course, he must have been aware, but he too knows nothing about the whereabouts of the files or the money.

Then I know who could.

Who? she asked.

Desmond, the lawyer.

I don't think so.

I know so, don't be fooled by his appearance, that guy knows a lot more than you can possibly think. Do you know how we can find him?

My sources told me he left the country after the will was read.

Then we already know who stole it.

Stole? sir Desmond is no thief. He was the only one on this entire Earth father trusted with his life. I don't think he was just a lawyer for father, from what I observed from their relationship he was something more but I was never included in that circle so I didn't know all of his duties to father.

I never saw the guy as an ordinary lawyer, that guy is dangerous and I knew that from the first day he approached me. Is it possible some of us are on the board of Saints? I asked.

For the legitimate sons, yes, but I don't think all of them but one thing I know is they are safe from the hands of Saints for now. I thought you were one of them.

And why would you think that? I asked surprised.

You know, the reading of the will was not the first place we met.

I had the feeling but, I couldn't remember where I saw you so I just stopped thinking about it.

I saw you leaving the party where father was killed. I came down from the elevator sometime after father and I had an argument, I walked past you, father and Mary discussing, I went outside to receive some of my guests. I was coming inside while you and another guy were walking outside, I wondered why you were leaving so early but couldn't ask because your aura wasn't friendly that night. I spent about a minute with my guest and rushed up to get something, on my way coming back from my room I had father is being rushed to the hospital and that's how he died. What were you doing there?

You were wearing a red dress, I noticed because you didn't put on high heels, which would have been fabulous if only you did. I was invited by Father himself through Sir Desmond. We disagreed on a lot of things and in the end, I left without saying goodbye.

At least you met him once.

Now that's the only thing I regret, I should have just stayed at home and maybe I would have escaped all this drama. I've been wanting to ask but don't know how, do you know anything about the Organisation called The Order?
