Chereads / A Life After Life / Chapter 5 - Risk

Chapter 5 - Risk

"My child your mother lost her battle against cancer, I was there with her during the last minutes. Hoping and praying that her will would win the battle against all of the cancer but unfortunately, she lost and could never move into this house. Before she took her last breath, she told me that on any condition don't let my son regret the decision he made for himself to run away."

Rayleigh froze when he heard about his mother, the owner, and his family surrounded him, and yet he felt so alone. It was such a humid day, yet he felt so cold, there was nowhere he could run to now, and there was no one he could call family now. It was easy for the owner to say not to regret, but regret is what Rayleigh did; he hated himself the most that day. He didn't speak a word and just walked away in silence. What could he say?

One can only say what he feels, but he felt nothing at all. Once it pours, it rains so heavy so often, and Rayleigh was soaked wet in the storm, but the sun rises we don't know when but it sure does rise.

Of course, humans have such a rapid rate of evolution, and so eventually, as time went on, Rayleigh moved on from this incident and chose to make a house of his own with a small laboratory inside of his home. He was all alone, but when you are famous, people often acknowledge your existence more than what they do before you reach the level of accomplishment.

So, the cousins who never visited him chose to start showing up suddenly, but there was nothing Rayleigh could do to avoid them; he was all alone himself, so he decided to call them family as they would visit him on the weekends.

Rayleigh wanted to see his mother for the last time because he wanted to apologize to his mother; rather than regretting what had happened, he converted the situation to fuel his motives to meet his mother somehow and apologize finally. It is said that when you choose to work towards your desire with pure intent and purpose to achieve what you truly desire, then life starts guiding you as some mentor who would guide his student to reach his ultimate goal.

Of course, he stumbled along the way, but life guided him to a secret he found out about how the father of scientists 500 years ago was trying to figure out how to enter the 'Infinite void.' Many scientists came across the research done by the science's father even though he had failed during his study, so this made the other scientists believe that if the father of the scientist wasn't able to figure it out, how could we figure it out?

Rayleigh was a man among men. If he set his sights on something, he wants he would do so until he achieves it without a single hesitation or thought of impossibilities entering his mind. Thanks to his undying determination, he found someone he could call a friend, who he could call a family.

Rayleigh saw himself in Anon, and they were the same person.

"Say Rayleigh, what are we supposed to do of him? This yokai is dead now, right?"

"Devour him of course!! What else are you supposed to do? Organize a burial for him? Eat him to grow stronger."

"What the heck is wrong with you Ray? Eat this, eat that!! First it was the paper you asked me which was already disgusting enough and now this? Give me a break, get out of my body and clean up this mess. It's no time to be kidding around my mom is going to call me anytime soon for dinner, and that is what I'll be eating tonight. Anyway, yokai are the ones that feed on the other yokai so get out of my body and be my guest to clean up this mess."

"Well if you so desperately want me to come out of your body so be it, next time if danger arrives you must have to eat the delicious paper again to merge. Hah! A win-win situation for me."

"AHHHHHHHHHHHH! Screw you, I'd rather eat paper than eat that. Enjoy your meal while I go enjoy a real meal, get out of my body now."

It was the first time today Anon was able to finally breathe in peace, "Ah, what a delicious dinner, thank you so much mo...…." Just as he finished thanking his mother, he heard someone banging the window of his dining room.

"Mom, do you hear that? Who is banging the window?"

"Oh lord, Anon, I think you must be tired. There is no one banging the window, I don't hear a sound. You are seeing and hearing things, just go and sleep and take a good long rest."

Unfortunately, he realized that it is another spirit who has arrived here to devour Anon, "I think I'm really tired you're right I should go to bed, good night mother." The sound had not stopped coming from outside his dining room, so Anon immediately went upstairs to check where Rayleigh was and what he was doing.

"HEY, WAKE UP YOU STUPID BODYGUARD!! You are sleeping here while there are spirits chasing me, I'll end up dead very soon rather than finding a way for me to go back to the normal world."

"Ah, he's a weak spirit even you can deal with him, you must learn to protect yourself anyway if I'm not around. I'm going back to sleep."

Anon spoke to himself, "Here I wanted peace but there was no peace thanks to my school and now I'm ended up in this mess, what have I ever done to deserve this much suffering." Anon was so angry and regretted how his life had come to this. He manifested the life due to his constant complaining and whining instead of being grateful for being alive and the things he had. The spirit followed Anon's energy upstairs and was banging the room where Anon was sitting.

"As if the situation was not bad enough, now I can't find the baseball bat with which I could at least protect myself from this yokai."

The yokai outside somehow manages to open the window and speaks to Anon, "You human child" just as he opens the window, the yokai sees something travelling towards him at a fast pace, and it was a steel cup that knocks him, and he falls in the garden. "YOU HUMAN CHILD, What are you doing I have come here just to ask you for help and this is how you treat guests?"

"Last time I treated a guest nicely he threatened to kill my whole family and made my life from bad to worse, what makes you think I'll be kind to guests anymore? Besides what help would you need from me, there's nothing I can do to help get out of here."

"Human child, you do wish to not see yokai anymore and live a normal life, don't you? That yokai there who's sleeping next to you is tricking you. We already know a way to go back into the normal world, he is tricking you for him to attain great power and devour all the spirits for himself when he is hungry. Why else do you think he would be here with you? He wants to use you and your body."

"What makes you say that? Are you friends with this man?"

"I am not his friend, but I sure understand his intentions, follow me I'll show you the path to lead you back to your normal life. By now you would have realized by my energy that you even as a human are far more powerful than me. It is your opportunity now to escape, while he is fast asleep take a chance and run from here back into your world."

Anon was completely convinced that this Yokai had a way out of the infinite void, so he revised his options. "How sure are you that you can take me back to where I belong, what if you're just like this yokai here trying to gain power?"

"Come see for yourself, then you will thank me for eternity for saving you from this world and that yokai."

"If I feel the slightest of doubts, I'm going to kill you instantly. I want to go back out of this place so I will take this risk."

How could one tell what the true intentions of people are just by looking or hearing their words? Often they say things to say them but have other's intentions in the back of their minds. How was Anon supposed to realize this? He was only a child, a mere child existing in not one but two cruel worlds; the earth and the Infinite Void.

"Alright, take me wherever you must. Let us see what solution you have for me to take me back to my world."
