Chapter 555 - CH28 (550), PokeCenter (2)

I did not know if it was because the team reported that I was already good enough at determining the signs of the common conditions, but at the end of my third week with the preliminary diagnosis team, I was once again called into Nurse Joy's office. Having already expected it, I was not surprised when Nurse Joy told me that I was being reassigned again.

My new unit was actually one of the treatment teams, and as one would expect it was not one of the big case units, but one that dealt with the more common conditions that could usually be treated relatively swiftly and without any hiccups, such as regular burns, paralysis, "minor" wounds, as well as various degrees of exhaustion. So, practically anything that starting trainers would be forced to deal with at the start of their journey.

Honestly, I felt that the strategy applied by the PokeCenter in regard to aspiring trainers was incredibly thoughtful. They first showed them how to produce some of the easier and more common remedies by themselves, which was valuable knowledge that each aspiring trainer was able to learn for free as long as they made use of the chance they were given.

Afterward, they taught them how to identify the most common problems along with some more uncommon ones, while reminding them to use the stasis function of their Pokeball for any serious/emergency cases. Another vital and useful skill they were taught for free.

Once the trainers-to-be had that down, they were shown how to deal with some of the more common conditions by themselves if they had/wanted to. Naturally, how much each individual learned was up to said trainer candidate, but I personally felt that the PokeCenter/alliance's approach was absolutely brilliant.

The fact that they were freely sharing such useful and crucial skills with all aspiring trainers was unbelievable, especially when they could have made a lot of money by withholding that knowledge first and charging everyone for it once they knew just how valuable it was.

Still, the alliance and Joy family were thankfully better and smarter than that, so all I could do was express my heartfelt admiration for their approach and magnanimity, though I had no idea how many were making proper use of the chance they were given.

Many humans tended to not appreciate/look down on things they were given for free, so it was possible that quite a few aspiring trainers wasted the chances/lessons they were given. Quite unwise in my opinion, but that was how things went quite often.

Anyway, Arcday came and I moved to my new unit. The physician in charge of our team told me to watch them work for the rest of the day, and that I would be allowed to assist them starting tomorrow, so that's what I did.

As physician Lee had promised, the team involved me during the treatments they performed on Mewday. After that, my involvement got progressively bigger, until two weeks had passed and I was allowed to perform my first solo treatment.

It was only a mildly serious burn treatment, so all I did was determine the degree of the burns, choose an appropriate burn paste, carefully apply it to the burned area, and dress the wound. Still, relatively simple treatment or not, I finally got to do it on my own, so I felt good about the chance since I had earned the right to do it.

Reaching this point took me until the practical end of the month since we had Dialday and the upcoming Grouday was the last day of the 29th month. With that being the case, I could not help but wonder if I would be reassigned once more, but I decided that there was no use in worrying about it when all I could do was wait until Arcday to find out.

By the end of the day, I was permitted to perform another two solo treatments, and I had to admit that there was just some great sense of achievement that I felt, even though none of the three cases I handled were anything special, and I could have handled them before all this as well.

Regardless, I was quite motivated when I went to work on Kyoday, and I was allowed to handle more cases by myself than I had been allowed to yesterday. As a result, I was in a rather good mood when I headed back to my dorm room since I wanted to enter Utopia to spend some time with my Pokemon. Well, I had no idea about the surprise that was waiting for me there.

Apparently, Saphira/Altaria had advanced to the (high) gold stage just half an hour ago, and she kept it a secret since she wanted to surprise me in person, which she did by fluff-bombing me from above. After I caught her in a hug, Saphira happily shared that she had advanced while radiating her (high) gold-stage prowess. I naturally congratulated as well as praised her, and my compliments made her visibly happy.

We obviously celebrated her achievement with everyone, and somehow during her party, Osiris/Marowak finally ended up feeling the option/opportunity to evolve. Well, at least that was what he told me after he discreetly came to my side since he did not want to steal Saphira's thunder.

We put our heads together, talking all hush-hush about whether he should go ahead with his evolution or if we should wait for him to finish his limit-breaking phase first. Still, considering that the completion was at least a year away, we decided to settle on him completing his second round instead since that was only a final parameter away from happening.

He had been working on his agility for quite some time, so we expected it to reach SS soon enough. Having come to that decision, Osiris went back to Igneel's side and rejoined the celebration. We kept the news to ourselves for now, and the celebration went on for the rest of the day.

As for Grouday, once I had finished the weekly routine check-up, I spent 10 minutes per Pokemon to watch them demonstrate the results of their training. Doing this once in a while gave my Pokemon something to look forward to since they got to actually show off the fruits of their labor. In simpler words, it served as good motivation.

Anyway, Arcday came, and I was happy that what I had been suspecting did not happen. I was not called into Nurse Joy's office and continued my work with the treatment unit. I had no idea if I would be with this unit until the end of the month, which also happened to be the end of my PokeCenter phase, or if I would get transferred at some point for a last stint in another unit.

Still, that was something out of my hands, so I simply focused on doing a good job at assisting the physician when necessary and treating the Pokemon myself whenever I was allowed to lead the treatment. More than two weeks passed like that, and I had gotten quite used to my role.

During this time nothing outstanding happened, at least not until Mewday of week three. That day I got a piece of good news, from none other than Prime/Beedrill. Prime was not as considerate as Saphira/Altaria, and in his excitement, he directly called out to me as soon as he advanced to the (high) gold stage.

I happened to be dressing a cut on a Machoke when he did that, and I nearly wound the bandage a bit too tight due to Prime's distraction. Thankfully I had my second thought stream to fall on, so while that one made sure to finish the dressing, my mind entered Utopia and focused on Prime, who happily shared that he had advanced.

After congratulating and praising him, I told him that we would celebrate his achievement once I was off work, before focusing back on Machoke, whose dressing was done at that point. Hence, I told Machoke that his wound should be fully healed by tomorrow morning, along with what he had to take heed of until then.

Happy that with another job well done, I sent Machoke on his way before reporting the successful completion of the treatment. The rest of the day went by quite swiftly since I was busy at work, and before long, I was back at the dorm. I directly entered Utopia, and everyone was already waiting for me at my place.

Seeing them all already gathered there, I made a quick announcement over UtopiaFM for those not present who might want to join us before declaring the start of the celebration. The whole Beedrill Swarm showed up for the celebration so it ended up being extremely lively. Still, being the rich master that I was, the addition of only 2000ish Pokemon made no difference for me and I was able to provide food, snacks, as well as drinks for everyone.

An interesting tidbit was that Prime's advancement served as a little milestone since he had been the last member of the Golden Club that had not reached the (high) gold stage, so with his advancing all current Gold Club members were at the (high) gold stage.

Regardless, the next day work resumed as usual, and I finished the week without any hiccups. Still, what was supposed to happen did eventually happen. After I clocked out on Kyoday, I was called to Nurse Joy's office, and she told me that I would be assigned to another unit. I had to admit that I had not expected that simply because only a week and a half were left until the end of my PokeCenter phase.

Nonetheless, I had to accept things as they were, so on Arcday of the following week, I joined the foremost treatment unit. Considering that this unit dealt with major/severe cases that the other treatment groups could not handle, they, and consequently I, had not much to do.

Honestly, we were not assigned any cases on Arcday, so the doctor and her assistants used some of their older cases as case studies to explain the work they did and what one had to pay attention to before, during, and after the treatments/operations.

Mewday ended up being similar, but no one was worried about that. On the contrary, they were happy that this was the case, not because they had less work to do, but because it meant that no Pokemon with severe conditions was brought to the PokeCenter.

That peace got crushed on Giratiday when we were assigned a Scyther with major blunt trauma. The blows it suffered led to internal damage with some of Scyther's organs suffering severe damage that had to be treated directly, so Scyther had to go under the blade.

The operation took close to four hours, but in the end, the doctor declared the operation a success. He shared that Scyther would make a full recovery, which lifted Scyther's crushed trainer's spirit a bit. The trainer seriously listened to the doctor's instructions for the past operation period and left after profusely thanking our team for the work we/they had done.

Well, he followed the assistants as they pushed Scyther's stretcher into one of the care/treatment rooms, where he would stay for another few days to stay under observation. Once they were gone, the doctor called me over and asked me what I thought about the operation I just witnessed.

Due to how serious the situation had been, I had only been allowed to watch the operation, but even that had been an experience that I would not forget. I told her my impression and she then proceeded to ask me some questions to see if I had noticed certain things they had done during the operation.

Anyway, aside from that one case, we received no other patients that day, and the next one only arrived on Dialday, though this time there were two that came one after another. The first one ended up being too serious for even our attending doctor to handle, so she ordered the Azumarill to be put in stasis so that it could be transferred to another PokeCenter with a more accomplished doctor.

The other case was less critical, and our team was able to handle it. The Primeape had both its legs reattached and the doctor said that they would regain their previous strength as long as the Primeape and its trainer followed the post-operation instructions as well as the follow-up exercises once the wounds were fully healed.

Had it been a clean cut, the operations and follow-up would have been much easier, but since the limbs got ripped off, the operation had been much more complicated. Similarly, the post-operation phase was more demanding as well.
