Chapter 19 - The burning city

Jaren immediately ran back to the group. He figured if he was going to be emperor of this kingdom, he was going to start fast and explosive. Strike when the iron was hot. Then he saw his group in the distance; the extra's were all chatting amongst themselves, sparing, and generally just relaxing. He saw that Gooba, Pipin and Boko sitting in a circle also talking. Cycle was up in a tree with a straw in his mouth, just relaxing. It looked like he was watching Gooba.

From this scene Jaren could deduce that all his 43 group members regained their strength from the day before.

Then all of them saw Jaren running towards them. Pipin stood up first, seeing the urgency on Jaren's face made his blood pump fast. The others started doing the same; standing up quickly and observed the boss attentively. The piranha's weren't so mannered, but you could see that even they tensed up.

Before you knew it, all of the squad leaders were standing infront of their squads in perfect formation. Jaren didn't hesitate, "All of you, grab your spears and listen up!" He pointed to behind him to were to forest edge was. "Behind me it seems that there is camp with other goblin's like us that are getting attacked!" Every goblin exchanged looks to eatchother, still no voice could be heard. Jaren kept talking, "We don't know them, but we must protect them, cause they clearly can't do that for themselves."

Confused Pipin asked, "Really? Other goblin's? How is this all happening!?" Jaren knew that everyone would be confused.

They never even heard about a city before so there was no point in explaining. All the goblin's they had seen where the only ones they were born with. Jaren bet that they didn't even consider the existence of other goblins. All this information dumped on them would certainly disorient them, so the boss had to keep it as simple as possible. "I know this all is confusing, but this is urgent and we need to get to them now!"

"A-alright boss!" Pipin said, still confused but determined. "Good, you all follow me!" Jaren ordered. He ran to the forest edge, and so did his group. They all moved in unison, following the leaders back. Observing while doing so noticing a body of the dead woman and after that seeing bodies of dead soldiers. Quickly all of them jumped past the forest edge on to the field, standing on plain ground for the first time.

Then the extras saw what the boss was talking about. A very large camp big enough to house thousands goblins, with out of control fire on the houses leading dark clouds into the sky. Then they also saw the people fighting on the front gate. It were ten villagers back to back encircled by four attackers. Most of the civilians were putting a fight using swords, spears and hamers. Two of them ran, trying to slip by one of the soldiers. They got chopped in half by their stomach by a attacker with a yellow ribbon on his wrist. The upper half of the chopped civilians flew past the attacker and landed on the ground sounding like a heavy bag. Thick blood splattered everywhere. You could see that the other defenders their morale dropped significantly, almost dropping their weapons in submission.

One of them it did not. No, instead the goblin with short trimmed hair let out a ragefull cry before he seemed to command the others to attack. These people spoke gibberish, just like the first goblin Karen saw with a scar on his face. He wondered if he would see that goblin in this city.

The civilian's didn't have a good plan of attack. All of them would attack simultaneously, without a clear target in mind. Then they would be tired at the same time, leaving them open for a easy attack by the enemy.

Also, the aggressors were young, maybe in their mid twenties, a prime time were men are the most aggressive and the strongest fighters. While the civilians were in their late thirties, mid forties. This didn't make them weak, but it was obvious that if they were fighters they were terribly out of shape. This all applied to the civilian goblin's, except one with the short trimmed hair. While the others were distracting the soldiers the short trimmed one was fighting in a one on one battle against a agressor.

He seemed to be winning too with his multiple slash attack's putting the enemy on defense. He also seemed in his twenties, you could sense that in the way he fought. Every strike from him to his enemy was passionate and full of energy. He also looked youthful because of his face that was devoid body rimples of time.

This what Jaren saw when he was running to the wooden gates of the city. This made him itch for a fight too. To prove that he was a better warrior that the Goblin with the short trimmed hair. Though with the other goblins, he concluded that even though the civilians were half a meter bigger than them, that he could beat them in a fight if it came to group battles.

"The ones in black are the our targets!" Jaren shouted. He meant the four aggressors, they were wearing thick black armour for their chest. All ten of them carried a one handed sword, being able to professionally use one. Jaren started his streak of commands, "Cycle! You take the attacker on the right with your squad, Gooba you take the on the left and Pipin, we take the one in the middle with Jaka's old group. The Piranha's!"

When the forty four goblin's passed the wooden gates they ran straight to their given targets. When enemies noticed them, you saw an immediate panic in their faces, their targets changing from the defenders to Jaren's group. The civilians also saw them coming and they showed a whole spectrum of emotion from surprised to proud. Like a wave Jaren's group overwhelmed the enemy soldiers. They stood no chance. They tried swinging their blades at the goblin's, but all that resulted were embarrassing misses.

Then they got pushed to the ground, and stabbed with the spears, all you could hear were the screams of terrified soldiers. The three soldiers at the gate were all dead, the fourth one was still in battle with the short trimmed hair goblin, losing at that. Now he had all kinds of cuts and bruises on his body, even missing two fingers of his sword hand. The soldiers seemed to already given up on winning the fight, only blocking two more attacks before being cut down by the short trimmed one.

The short trimmed one turned around fast to face the other soldiers. That's when he noticed Jaren his group, he stared at them, at Jaren the most, then he gasped; such a gasp that told that he definitely did not expect to see them here.

-------------

Sunjack was back for only two weeks when the attacks happened. Ruining his limited time he had of rest and his family. See Sunjack just came from a battle to defend a crucial city of the state, which he barely survived. And even before that he came back from Fort Juman, one of the toughest bootcamps in the state of Dangerang. All together he has been gone for one cycle and a third -about twelve months- and came back just in time to see the young ones come from the baby woods. Then the attacks happened. It seemed that enemies from a battle further ahead slipped by the defending force and came straight for the closest city there was. They just wanted chaos probably or else they would've went even deeper into the state.

When the attack happened, Sunjack was sleeping in his room hearing, a struggle down the hall. It sounded like Maaly was fighting of some kind of aggressor. "No! don't touch me!" she cried, followed by the dull sound of her falling on the wooden floor. "Sunjack!" she cried out before you could hear a deep voice ask, "Are there others?" before he commanded, "search every room for me would ya!" Before that sentence was finished Sunjack already flew to the corner of his room were his one handed sword was leaning against the wall.

He didn't do so silently, and by the time he tried opening the door it already did for him. He stabbed at the first sign of a person. Piercing the neck of an enemy soldier and without wasting his time pushed the goblin out of his way so he could die on the floor.

In the hall he saw another goblin pinning Maaly down trying to rip of her clothes. "MOTHER!!!!!" he roared with the rage only a son could make when faced with such a scene. That's when the other goblin noticed Sunjack, looking up to see a face of a goblin on the edge. He foolishly put his weapon beside him on the floor and reached for it. By the time his hand came close to it Sunjack already chopped that thing off and with his second swing Sunjack took his head. It fell and rolled on the floor like a bouncy ball. His body collapsed on Maaly but Sunjack ripped it off her like he was a dirty towel.

"Are you alright mother?" He asked while checking her body for wounds. "Yes I am fine Sunjack," she was hyperventilating and shivering while holding herself, "I was just waiting for your father to get home, and then I heard all these screams from the outside, then all of a sudden, these goblins bursted open the doors and just started destroying everything." Sunjack gave her a kiss on the forehead then hugged her. "It's alright mother, your safe now. And Lapland, is he here?" Sunjack asked. "He went to the city hall with your father. You know how your father can be, he wanted to show him the responsibility of being the city elder."

"Ofcourse dad did that," Sunjack thought, "Lapland was probably anxious when the day started. Now he must be terrified."

Sunjack went to look outside and before he even got to look past window he could see orange light shine into the house. The door of his house was still open and when he looked outside it was a terror. Fire everywhere, spreading to every house, people running from the enemy soldiers, dead bodies lying on the streets, people clothed in fire running around screaming. "I trust in the fact that father will Protect Lapland, but now, I'll Protect you mother." Their house was at the very end of the city close to the forest, so when the babies came in, they'd be the first they would see.

If the Kingas got this far, it would be only a matter of time before they would go to their young, then steal and indoctrinate them into their world. When he looked towards the baby woods he saw a woman with a slash on her back drag herself to the woods. Ofcourse she did, many have great faith in the next batch of children. Protecting them was of the upmost importance. Sunjack was sure the woman was already dead, but her goals wouldn't die with her. "Mother!" Sunjack called, he went to the kitchen, took a knife that was hanging on the wall and he shoved it in her trembling hands. "Go hide in my room, lock the doors, then don't come out untill you hear my voice. When I come back it will be with others, alright!" "Of course Sunjack, may Jafari keep you safe!"

Then Sunjack ran out the door to the outside. Immediately he felt the heat from the fire engolf his body, he started sweating not even seconds later. It was supposed to be early in the morning, the city was supposed to be dark around this time. Now the whole place was lit up with the fire. Sunjack, for the second time in his life dived straight into hell. But this time was different, this time he had to take control. First thing he had to do was kill every enemy that got this far, so that's what he did. For the next hour he killed as many Kinga soldiers as he could and assembled himself a small force of men.

These were ordinary goblins. They weren't chosen to fight in a army like Sunjack was, they just took over the business their parents left for them. So to say that they were combat ready was far from the truth. There were only about three hundred men in the city that could fight. A portion of them were old, and the rest were too scattered to find. So to call them to arms was almost impossible. Though he did everything he could to lead the ordinary to a victory, yet a few of his men died. A burden he was not ready to take and a faliure he would internalize

That's how he ended up meeting Jaren.
