Chapter 20 - BRIDGES BETWEEN WORLDS

Elli's Treasure.

"Are you ready for this?"

Mikoto and Elli were back in Magnolia Town.....standing in front of the rainbow gateway that led to Academy City.

Elli took a deep breath. "Alright....let's go..."

Mikoto smiled. "Okay then.....here we go."

Mikoto walked through the gateway with Elli sitting on her head as usual. There was a breif lapse in vision, and the twosome found themselves on a large platform in an area full of warehouses. Next to the gateway sat a man in an Anti-skill uniform who was reading a newspaper.

"ID?" the man grunted without looking up from his articles.

Mikoto pulled out a student ID card and showed it to the man.

"Go on....." said the man without much enthusiasm.

Elli gave a huge gasp. "Those buildings!!! They're so big!!!"

The man finally looked up from his paper at Elli with an expression of confused surprise. "Did that cat just talk?"

"Yes." said Mikoto.

The man stared for a minute, then shrugged. Apparently, gaurding a gateway between two dimensions had taught him not think much of this stuff. "Okay. Have a nice day."3

"So where do you think we should look for this legendary treasure first?" said Mikoto. "This city is pretty big, so we might be looking for a while..."

Elli reached into a pocket and pulled out what looked like a city map. "No worries....a treasure hunter always comes prepared!! Now just follow my directions and we'll be fine!!"

"I didn't think they would lable a legendary treasure location on a city map....." said Mikoto raising an eyebrow.

"A friend of mine in the treasure hunting field gave me this map....he marked the location with this X over here!"

"Alright then, lead the way!"

Mikoto walked through the various districts and areas of Academy City, following the various directions that Elli gave as they continuosly searched for the 'treasure' that was supposedly legendary enough to have attracted people from Fiore to look for it.

Finally after passing through who knew how many blocks, they came to their first clue.

"There it is!" said Elli. "Just like my friend marked on the map!! The red and green light with a metal bird on it!"

Mikoto looked up to where Elli was referring. It was a traffic light that had a crude metal sculpture of a bird on it. Mikoto remembered that it had been a prank by one of the level 3 pyrokinesists last year that had caused the bird to be welded to the traffic light.

"Okay....so what do we do now?" said Mikoto.

"It says, we have to get on top of the traffic light and look for the sparkling rainbow window due East!!"

"Ummm.....Elli? I don't think people will like us standing on top of the traffic light......"

But before Mikoto could finish, Elli activated her wings and picked up Mikoto by the back, flying right up on top of the traffic light where Mikoto waved her arms like a windmill in an attempt to keep ballance.

Mikoto gave a yelp and wrapped both her hands around the bird sculpture as people below stared. "E-Elli! Warn me next time okay!?"

Elli flew up to Mikoto's head and put a paw over her eyes, looking to the east for what was described as a Rainbow Window.

"Elli....I think those Judgement Officers are looking at us...."

"I see it Mikoto!!" Said Elli in utter excitement. "Look, the window on that skyscraper is colored like a rainbow in the sunlight!"

Mikoto looked at the window where Elli was referring to and groaned. The window was on one of the most heavily secure buildings in Academy City. "Elli.....that's Judgement recruitment offices, they aren't going to let us in just to look at a funny window..."

"Why not?"

"Because they only let people who interested in joining into the upper.....levels.....Elli...what's with that look?"

"They only let in people who want to join........" said Elli rubbing her paws together. "I just got a plan!!"

12 minutes later...inside Judgement recruitment offices.

"So why were you interested in joining up....ms...?"

"Misaka!" said Mikoto to the Judgement officer at the sign-up desk in front of her. "Well I just thought...ermmm....it would be good for me....."

The girl sighed. "You know that we get a lot of similar responses, and the ones who usually can't commit end up getting a really raw deal....especially given the 4 months of basic training you would have to go through..."

"I-I know..." said Mikoto thinking of Kuroko and how she always kept telling her how tough it was in Judgement. "I just wanted to let you know I was interested.....that's all..."

Hurry up Elli....I don't really want to sign up for Judgement!!!! Mikoto thought frantically. I don't want to do paperwork and sit at a desk for 4 hours after going through months of push ups and running!!!1

"Are you alright Ms. Misaka? You're clutching your chair awfully hard....."

"Oh...it's nothing..." said Mikoto. "Erm.....what were you saying?"

"I was saying that we're not signing up any recruits at the moment....but when a spot opens up, I'll be sure to let you know. Could you please sign your full name here?"

Mikoto signed her name on a clipboard marked, "Waiting List".

The Judgement Officer's eyes widened as she saw the name on the clipboard. "Wait....Mikoto Misaka......? You're that Misaka!!?"

Uh oh...Mikoto thought.....forgot I'm a well known level 5.......

Mikoto then heard a ribbiting sound. She pulled out her Gekota cellphone and read the text. It said. "Found the clue....was under windowsill.....lets go! :D :D :D :D"1

"Erm....right! So I'll just go now!" said Mikoto getting up quickly and walking towards the door.

"W-wait!!" said the Judgement Officer jumping from her desk. "You know, I think I can probably squeeze you into a training spot right now instead of having to wait...!!"

"It's fine, really....."

"Or I can promote you right now and give you your badge....!!"

"I really don't think that's necessary....."

"Oh well, but before you go..." The girl reached under her desk and pulled out a black shirt with the red Fairy Tail guild insignia on it. "At least sign my Fairy Tail t-shirt!!!"

One signature later, Mikoto walked out of the Judgement Offices with Elli flying along side her. Mikoto read the little sheet of paper that Elli had found under the windowsill.

"Hmmm....It says....'Hi Elli, Frosch is glad you found Frosch's note.....Frosch only needs you to turn three blocks west from here.....look for big sign.....' Heh, I wonder who Frosch is..."3

"We met last year when I was exploring the lost temple of the Flying Pineapple."

Mikoto almost burst out laughing. "*snigger*....Flying Pineapple?"3

Elli shrugged. "Apparently the ones who built it were known for their randomness and tendency to name things totally unrelated names....like they called their bathrooms Duck Hounds..."1

Anyways..." said Mikoto. "If what Frosch said is true....then the treasure should be right in the Learning Garden..."

The two continued to walk for 10 minutes.

Mikoto stopped in her tracks, she was looking at a cafe that she had seen so many times.... "Wait....the treasure is here?"

"Not only that!" said Elli her eyes sparkling with utmost cheerfulness. "That is the treasure!! It is said to make the best blueberry muffins in both dimensions!! Oh I am so glad we finally found it!!"

Mikoto couldn't help herself. She began to giggle uncontrollably.

"Eh?" said Elli. "What's so funny?"

Mikoto pointed at the sign that hung over the cafe. On the sign was a familiar insignia, and the words, "Fairy Tail Cafe."

Elli stared at the sign for a while with her mouth wide open. "All this time.......we already had the treasure.....?"

"Yep..."

Elli paused for a minute. "Can we still go inside and get muffins?"

"I don't see why not."

"And can I have extra blueberries on mine?"

"Sure."

"Promise?"

Mikoto nodded. "Promise.."

"Cross your heart?"

Mikoto picked up Elli and hugged her. "Cross my heart."2
