Zach opened his eyes to the bright light coming through the window. It was morning. He looked out the window and saw the clear sky with the occasional clouds here and there. The sun was high in the sky and judging by its position, Zach estimated it to be about ten in the morning. He had been deep in his thought staring at the view outside when he thought, 'Where the hell am I?'.
He looked around the room he was in. The first thing he noticed was the colour. It was white. The walls, the floors, the ceiling; everything was white. It almost hurt his eyes. The last time he was in a place like this was when he was a small kid. He was at a hospital having to get an operation done. Nothing too serious. It was just to remove his nearly ruptured appendix. He still had the scar on his lower abdomen which was used as a way for Zach to remember his childhood all those years ago.
'Oh wait, that's it. I'm in a hospital'.
As he looked around the room his suspicions were confirmed right. The bed was atypical hospital bed and if that wasn't enough proof there were vitals monitors around his bed. He further inspected the room but there was nothing else noteworthy. There was a chair and a desk next to his bed; that was it;
Making most of the situation, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath in order to relax. A range of aromas were sucked in by his nose and filled up his longs. The most obvious and potent smell was the antiseptic smell which you could smell in any hospital you went to. For as long as Zach could remember, he hated that smell. Further analysing the scents consumed, he picked up on a soft subtle smell. The smell juxtaposed the previous potent smell making it overall bearable. Opening his eyes he looked towards the windowsill, where newly trimmed flowers were sitting in a blue vase. It was perfectly placed so as to allow the fresh air to carry in the flower's scent and fill the room. But those weren't the only smells. For a while he could smell bacon and the earthy, floral smell of freshly brewed tea. And the more he breathed, the stronger the smells became. It was then that Zach realised he hadn't eaten in a long time. His mouth started watering.
Soon after the door to his room swung open and in walked a nurse holding a tray of breakfast. She looked in his direction and smiled. The woman was short and some would say quite well fed. She had short black hair coming up to her shoulder. The woman seemed to be quite old due to the wrinkles evident on her face or it could be the stress of the job. It was hard to say.
"Oh, good morning. You're finally awake", she said with a squeaky high pitched voice.
She walked towards the table by the bed and put the tray down.
"You should eat. You must be really hungry since you haven't eaten since yesterday."
Zach tried to sit up but then realised he couldn't move his right hand. It was handcuffed to the bed railing.
Seeing that Zach was confused and getting agitated, the nurse took a step back. She didn't want to be on the receiving end of the mans anger. To say the truth, the nurse wasn't informed that he wasn't a criminal and was only bound so that he won't go 'missing' again somehow. The nurse hurriedly walked out of the room and a few seconds later a huge burley man walked in. Judging by the uniform he wore, it would seem he was a police officer. He had a bald head and and a large scar running down the left hand side of his face. No sane person would dare look him in the eye for more than a few seconds. Yet Zach glared right at the man.
"Why am I handcuffed? I haven't done anything wrong. What did I do?", Zach was getting visibly more angry with each statement.
"Calm down, son.", the officer said putting up both his hands in a sign of peace trying to diffuse the situation.
"No I won't calm down! I demand and answer! And I'm not your son!".
The burly man internally cursed his job for always giving him people who are hard to deal with. Before he could say anything, the door swung open and in walked a tall woman with brown hair tied up in a bun. She wore the same uniform as the large man signifying she was also police. She carried a baton in her hand and was tapping it on he off hand in a threatening manner. For some reason Zach knew instinctively that the woman was more dangerous.
"If you shut up and stay calm we will remove the cuffs. Or they can stay on and you wont have any food.", the woman threatened him while hitting the wall with the baton.
After a few minutes of waiting Zach to say something, he realised Zach was calm enough to have the cuffs removed. As soon as it was off, Zach grabbed the food and started stuffing his face with no regard for manners. Zach hadn't retaliated not because he was scared of the woman but because he really wanted to eat some food. If he wanted, he could have easily gotten out out of the handcuffs himself. But doing that would only raise questions and make people more suspicious than they already were.
The man turned to the woman and spoke, "Come on, we need to inform Detective Reilly that he's awake.". Before the woman walked out, she gave one last menacing look at the man laying on the bed to make sure he knew his place. Zach could only smirk at that.
'If she really knew how strong I was, she would would be on her knees begging for forgiveness.'.
