Chapter 5 - Fish, Chips and a Pig

They were on the motorway for a few an hour or so. Kate was starting to get hungry so she decided to turn out of the motorway to the nearest service station. They walked in and she chose a table in the corner away from the rest of the people.

"What do you want to eat?"

"Umm... I'll have the fish and chips with some beer."

The real reason Kate decided to stop at a service station wasn't only because she was hungry. She wanted to pry out any information she could use against Zach before the interrogation began. And what better place than some innocent looking restaurant. She was even kind enough to pay for the man's meal, after all gratification was the second easiest way of getting a man to spill his secrets.

While Kate was thinking of ways to casually gain valuable information, she hadn't realised that they had been sitting in silence for almost fifteen minutes. When she looked towards the black haired man, he seemed agitated.

Internally she grinned, 'This is good, the more nervous the better'.

A few minutes later, the food came and she was about to begin her plan on gaining his trust and some information.

"Oh my god. This tastes so good. It's been so long since I had food like this. It feels like heaven."

The man was scoffing his face with food; most of it ending on the floor and the table. Kate visibly cringed at the sight.

'This was a huge mistake. Ahhh! Everyone's looking! How embarrassing! He eats liking a fucking dog.'

"Zach you need to eat more slowly or your gonna get a bad stomach. And everyone's looking at us. Please."

Kate decided to put extra emphasis on the please hoping to make him come to his senses. Zach looked up an saw most people around them looking and mumbled a sorry to Kate. He seemed so deflated afterwards that she almost felt sorry for stopping him from enjoying his food.

'He did say he hadn't eaten something good in a while. Poor thing....'

'Wait a minute, does that mean he remembers what happened to him during those two years? That little shit! He lied straight to my face and even pretended to faint. I've got to give it to him he is one good actor. It's time to throw a good bait.'

"You really seemed to enjoy that. So what were you eating the past two years?"

"Well you know how it is being a student. Most of the time you either miss a meal or you just stuff down some store bought food."

'Damn it! He didn't bite but he gave away another crucial information.'

Most people wouldn't have been able to pick up on the small pieces of information Zach was spilling, but Kate had an uncanny ability for deduction and extracting key information. It was one of the reasons why she had made it being a detective at a very young age.

'He just implied that he knew I went to university even though I never told him. He must have known I was working his case and so decided to do some background checks on me.'

"Ok, I'm done. Can we get going? I could do with some sleep."

'Ugh. What a pig.'

"Remember we only need to permanently have their... err... nukes disabled. We are not meant to be killing anyone. We don't want a fuck up like Russia."

The voice came from a white haired woman about 5' 11''. She had a slender build which came from rigorous exercise and dedicated work. She had an authoritative demeanour and seemed to be the leader. She wore a black overall with two guns hanging of her hip holsters. Before the woman could carry on with her speech, a man spoke up.

"Oh come on. That's not our fault, they were in our way and we needed to get the job done fast. It's not like killing was against the boss's orders."

He had dark brown hair with golden brown skin. He wore the same thing as the white haired woman and also carried a pair of guns. But he also had a white crystal embedded in his hand, which emitted a faint light.

"The boss didn't say you can't kill anyone because he wanted us to be able to defend ourselves without getting killed. Speaking of the boss, where is he right now, Tulzya?"

"Err... he's still on that small island. What is he even doing there?"

"That is not for us to know. We just need to do our part. Come on, we've already wasted enough time. Make sure you have all your equipment and don't die."
