The two stopped in the basement of the house. There was a note engraved on the door which made them stop.
[ Learn the truth and die with it. ]
"People who wanted to learn the true history entered through this very room," Liseis spoke in a low voice. "None of them came back."
"You want to make it out?" Luther asked.
Liseis nodded. "I want to spread the truth."
"But what makes you think we'll make it out?"
"There's a saying in my family that was passed down orally."
She recalled the only sentence that motivated her and helped her move past all the ridicule and shame she accumulated for the past seven years.
[ Don't let the Flamestone inside. ]
"They call this the 'Door of Truth' and told me only you're the person who can't enter. Isn't it obvious?"
'The true history I've been searching for was the life of this man.'
Liseis grinned sadistically to Luther who was still in shock at what he heard. This was because he remembered the past years of his life.
Luther was always chained to the ground. Her mother, subconsciously or not, never forgets to tie his ankles with heavy silver. Those chains were telling him that he was not allowed to go anywhere. They reminded him that he was a prisoner of the ground.
He initially thought that it was to prevent him from being seen by others but now he thought otherwise.
'Was it to prevent me from entering this room?'
Creaaak!
They pushed the door open and stepped inside. There was a narrow staircase that led deeper underground.
Blag!
The door closed loudly behind them.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Liseis spoke while they were walking down. It was too silent for her liking. Meanwhile, Luther wasn't bothered as he lived almost his whole life with this kind of silence.
"Have you read the book named Principle of History? That's my favorite book. I still remember the introduction. Actually, I memorized it."
"History is the accumulation of a life of a person. Therefore, true history is the entirety of a person's past."
Luther, who shared her love for history books, answered.
"Hihihi! It sounds nice, right?" Liseis giggled while continuing. "The 'Door of Truth' allowed people to see their true history, in other words, it allowed them to see their past lives."
Luther agreed by nodding. "Then what happened after that? Did the method to find the truth killed them after they learn their true history?"
He wondered if the price for knowing the truth was death. Of course, Luther and Liseis thought that 'History' was worth dying for. If not, they wouldn't be here. Sure, they didn't want to die but if they did then it couldn't be helped.
But contrary to his expectations, Liseis shook her head.
"No."
She had a confused look on her face as she replied.
"It was said that every person who learned about the truth willingly killed themselves afterward."
They both stopped walking. They reached the end of the stairs and saw another door. Something was also written there.
[ Turn back. Those who take a step further will suffer for eternity. ]
Creaaaak!
The two people pushed the door open and entered the room without hesitation. Each was buried in their own thoughts.
'Turn back, my ass. There's no way I'm stopping here after making it this far.'
'I've been suffering for as long as I could remember. Suffering a few times more won't matter.'
Liseis and Luther thought that there was nothing more that could top off the struggles they felt while yearning for the truth past his door.
They didn't know anything.
They didn't understand how blissful being ignorant was.
They didn't know how much of a blessing forgetting was to a person.
Both of them halted in their steps as soon as they saw the messages engraved on the wall. They could tell it was written by blood.
[ I am sorry. ]
[ Forgive me. ]
Those small messages continued repeatedly and surrounded a large message. This message was the reason why they couldn't move.
Liseis and Luther thought at that moment that the History they knew was all a lie.
[ God loved them and they loved God. ]
