Chapter 48 - Defeated by Fate

I heaved her in my arms again and followed behind lord Orpheus not that I was intending to spare him but I was giving him a chance to clear his name, I refused Jake's intent to accompany me but being so I once did that and it landed everyone else in trouble, he remained adamant about following after but as it is he headed medical assistance so moving further into the inner house of the mansion, we stopped at the accommodation area.

"Lucinda?" I called as I entered her room still with Maya in my arms, Lucinda looked up from an old book she was reading and gasped extensively

"What happened?" she rushed towards me and stopped in front of me without even getting to touch her, I could see the painful realization on her features; she looked at me again

"I'm sorry"

"I know, she doesn't need your help but he does" I peeked at Jake over my shoulder, he leaned against the door jamb, slouched forward and he was extensively looking sicker and his heart rate was constantly high

"He needs immediate care" I urged her pleading with my gaze to help cure a werewolf.

"I know it's much to ask of you but−"

"Nonsense, I enjoy helping with the sick" She walked around me and helped Jake in the room. I watched her place him down in the bed but he refused to lay all the way, he sat against the pillow staring my way

"You can trust her" I said as I could clearly see the uncertainty in his features, I walked around the bed to the unoccupied side and slowly rest Maya's body in the bed. I sighed inwardly as her look down at her, pain struck through me again and my eyes welled with tears. Feeling of anger and aggression downed on me again before I decided to pull the sheet over her whole body; I promised myself it was just for the mean time. I decided not to take Jake with as Lucinda had already started the treatment on him so I spun around but halted because Lord Orpheus was suddenly in my view.

"If this makes my future wife any happier−" he paused bringing out his hidden arm and I closely noticed it was covered in fresh blood and there was a heart cushioned in his fist. I looked perplexed for a moment not really knowing what this gesture meant, then a thought of maybe he had already found it but seeing the condition of her body to the heart this heart looked very fresh and the blood on him too. I stared back in his eyes

"It should assure you that I always have the control of my subjects"

"Is this some gesture from your kind when you affront someone?" I asked as I could remember Cassuis offered me the same when he showed up; God he was indeed like his most trusted student. Not just the overly confident and straight features but also his mannerism of talking, dressing code, posture, the way they carry themselves and to some extent their physical appearance.

"I took the liberty of looking into the matter with your deceased wolf friend−"he stated casually turning on his feel like he was observing the room

"Apparently the female wolf tried to escape, injured one of the guards and in the process to soothe her punitive tactic they had no approach but to pull her heart out" he spoke of it so nonchalantly that it made my blood boil.

"Lucinda, examine Maya please" I said not bothering to look towards her, lord Orpheus finally faced me after he was done talking and going around the room.

"The puncture wounds on her resulted because she was in fact fed on" I felt the hesitation in the air before she spoke her voice low but audible "Yes, your highness"

"Likewise her cellmate mentioned that your vampires came down there to torture and feed on them while knowing they would heal slower after being infected by Wolfsbane. Her death wasn't an incident, SHE WAS ASSASSINATED"

"And you further think two couple of hearts and your promise to keep them safe under your care are all but not just offensive but atrocious"

there were visible riffles of energy storming out of me and oppressing the air as I concluded, lord Orpheus in front of me felt it too because he coughed a mouthful of blood. I breathe out heavily as the riffled retreated back inside of me, which was new. I loosed balance for a second stumbling back but regained it right after. Losing my temper with him will only make things worst my sole purpose is getting her back for now, I will get to deal with him later. I glanced over my shoulder at her body, unmoving and it's been quiet a time.

"I will have to bring her back, I already fed her my blood but she isn't awakened." I stated mostly to myself looking own at my feet

"What?" I heard Lord Orpheus exclaimed which I ignored

"Wolfsbane poisoning, can it obstruct the healing attained from my blood?" I turned towards Lucinda whom was now currently by Jake's side. She looked dazed and Jake was barely conscious, all from the effect of my power lately, I knew I had to be careful.

"You are the most powerful, I had never heard of anything like this before. The effect is normally instant even if the body was in the worst of conditions but" she paused looking away from me

"But what? I need he heart for it to be completed? For her to awaken?" I asked impatiently, Lucinda still didn't look towards me or try to answer me. Jake's eyes rolled opened weakly before pushing to seat up straight

"Gia, you are not yourself" Jake stated cautiously, I knew it because I felt it the minute I realized she's gone and I couldn't do a thing to change it unless I have her heart. I could feel the unbearable pressure within the mass of my body like it would crack my skin and burst, taking everything insight away with it into ruins. Shakily I looked down at my vibrating hands and there were riffles of pure energy circling around them, out of my palm and into the back of the hand.

"But because of your tainted blood, maybe your blood works are limited" lord Orpheus doesn't talk for a while so I turned around fisting my hands by my side. It looked like he was in deep thought and not sure of his words but I don't choose to believe his words even if they were true

"Lucinda? Is her heart necessary for this to work?" I asked yet again not looking behind me

"NO"
