Chereads / The Dark Mark / Chapter 17 - Stasis

Chapter 17 - Stasis

Everyone was silent as they looked at this... demon. He just raced around the room, causing unimaginable mental trauma, not to mention he cut almost everyone there.

He just brushed it all off and walked to the center of the room, as if all that was just an illusion.

"Okay, let's begin! In this class you all learn how to use your magic efficiently! If you can not do this properly, then you will not last a single moment in battle! The life of a mage is far too exciting for you to settle for mediocrity!"

"Now, let's see what we have here!"

Professor Tukin then moved his gaze across all of the still stunned students, only pausing on a few. When he came to Ojero, his eyes widened and his smile grew to almost impossible lengths.

"A time mage? Lucky me! I haven't seen one of you since... Well, a long time!"

"Now, what kind are you? Fore-tell? Quicken? Instant Chronos? Come on, you can tell me! I won't spread the secret!"

Ojero just stared back with a slightly raised left eyebrow, trying to figure out what makes this monster tick.

"Hmm? Silent type? That's fine, I will crack that shell eventually! Or wait, you're just a kid! You probably don't even know! In that case, allow me, Professor Tukin to be your knight in shining armor!"

As he finished talking, ice collected around Professor Tukin and went down his back, forming a flawless and glistening white cape.

"See kids, all mythic rank mages vary! Mythic powers are world altering, but humans can not contain the entire strength they provide, and so mythic magic has smaller sub-types. For example, time magic. There are multiple kinds, such as the Fore-tell! They specialize in far future sight, allowing them to predict world changing events years if not decades prior!"

"Another one is the Instant Chronos. They specialize in combat magic with time, allowing them to see a few seconds in the future, slow down time for a few seconds, and some can even reverse time a few moments!"

Suddenly the Professor's face turned dark for the first time since they all saw him. His smile was gone, replaced by a harsh frown, and his eyebrows crossed down, making him look far more threatening than before.

"Another possible variation is a Stasis. You kids are too young to hear much about them, but if you ever meet one, avoid them. They have the ability to completely halt time for very long periods. During this period, they can move and do as they will."

As he was speaking, his fists clenched.

"You kids are a little young to remember this, but about 12 years ago a Stasis went insane in the Everentile Empire. He paused time for a full week, and killed the entire population of the city Pora. One moment everyone was alive, and just like that," the professor spoke while snapping his fingers once, "everyone fell down dead."

"It was the same in every case, a deep cut to the neck. No one was spared, men, women, children, he did not discriminate. There was a lot of talk after that to make time illegal, but many people remember how multiple time mages helped the continent flourish. Luckily, not too many Statis' are found."

The professor then turned towards Ojero, and looked him deep in the eye.

"No matter what you turn out to be, you better use your power well, or kid or not, I will make sure the city survives."

Ojero looked in his eyes and saw he meant it, every word. It didn't scare him, he had no current plans to slaughter a city, but he did not like the way the teacher threatened him. That, however, was a matter for another day. He was here to prepare himself for those days after all."

Suddenly, the smile was back, the fists clenched, and the teacher took as happy as a clam once more.

"Ok, that got a little dark didn't it kids? But let this be a lesson. Magic is a part of you. It is not just a tool to use, it is like an arm or a leg. You can use it according to your will, but unless something horrible happens and you lose it, you will forever be stuck with it. If you make bad choices for yourself and others, you will be punished."

"Ok, now, let's begin the lesson! Today, we will be trying to activate our magic crystals! Some people here have already accomplished this, but others have not!"

"You may have noticed the colored boxes on the floor! These represent your over-all element! Stand in whatever box suits you! Keep in mind its for the base element, so ice and water do indeed go together, same with plant mages and earth mages!"

The students started to get over the shock of the ice arena, and then started covering their cuts. Mages naturally had faster healing properties due to mana helping energize their body systems, but it could still hurt.

A sharp hiss could be heard every few minutes from someone who touched their cuts or hit someone else.

They all shuffled over to their respective boxes, while Ojero went to the square that had a few different colors for its border.

This represented the small variation yet rarity of mythic, making it unique.

Professor Tukin started making the rounds, instructing each different square the optimal method of activating their crystals. Most times he would just give a few tips and move on, due to the amount of squares.

When he got to Ojero, he simply gave him a glance, and left after saying.

"I will work more with you once everyone else activates their crystals too."

That was how the rest of the period went by, Ojero sitting there like a sack of potatoes while everyone else got work done.

He couldn't wait for the class to end, and the second it did, he ran out of the class as fast as he could. There is no way he would be caught in there with that demon. Shaking his head to forget what happened in that class, he simply ran towards his next class; Familiars.
