Chereads / Misfortune and Souls / Chapter 9 - Just my Luck

Chapter 9 - Just my Luck

"...lord that resides in the righteous kingdom let your mighty light break the night. Let it rise through the darkness to illuminate the road to my soul"

The small golden vortex on my forehead speeds up as the prayer picks up.

"Under your light, the obstacles and unattainable shall be no more. Your mighty powers pierce the path to Soulsc-"

Just when the absorption speed was about to peak, my concentration falters at the huge amount of energy abruptly pouring in.

I try to recuperate from the lapse, but the vortex is already dissipating.

"Argh! This is so annoying!"

I was never good at multitasking, but now I have to remember and recite scripture while maintaining the tedious vortex to guide the energy in.

Why can't magic here be academic in nature like in Harry Potter? I'm good at and enjoy school.

Today's theology and alphabet class were much more fun than learning this tedious prayer yesterday.

My brain is now all mush from that session. In this condition, I can't even try and continue to pray.

What should I do instead?

Oh, I know what to do!

I'll go for a run, That always helped clear up brain fog in my past life.

I'm done with kitchen duty and school for today anyway.

It's great being a genius.

My mind made up, I switch my uniform for a black sweater and some likewise black loose-fitting pants that I bought on the market from my allowance.

It isn't too cold today, this should be warm enough.

After exiting the youth residence, the winter cold hits my face

Ok, maybe it is a bit colder, but I'm too lazy to go back in.

I start jogging.

Luckily, it hasn't snowed in a while so the streets are clear.

I jog through the bustling village, enjoying the delicious fragrance and heat of the food stands, evading my fellow kids snowballs, and hearing the advertising of the traveling merchants.

It honestly is all quite merry. It feels kinda like Christmas time on earth.

I jog a bit more before I reach the south gate of the town.

From the gate, I start traveling the wide stone path down the mountain.

I pick up speed on this path, and along with it the cold disappears completely as my body starts to heat up from the exercise.

However, the path soon turns into a dead end.

Huh.

I'll just off-road.

So, I plunge myself down the mountain through thickets of pine trees.

As I go down the mountain into the valley ahead, I gain more and more speed.

I run around the winding pine trees, over the prickly bushes, and under the wayward branches.

"Damn, I love running!!"

For the first time since arriving in this world, I truly feel free. Unrestrained by my worry about my mysterious hater or the bizarre pity.

Instead, I feel free to bit care for anything. Free to do what I want.

Just one problem though...

BAM!

One of which I am brutally reminded of as my legs give out, and I start rolling down the mountain: I ain't no fit 27 years old anymore. I am six-year-old punk.

"Owie! Ow! Ow!"

After falling at least ten meters, I curse my lack of brain cells with my face planted into the dirt. I got too caught up in the moment to care for my limits.

I get up, once I got sick of eating dirt, to see that I landed in the valley I saw ahead while running.

Before me, I see a large frozen lake stretch out far and wide into a valley surrounded by mountains.

This is the valley I was running towards.

At least, I got a good view out of falling down.

Slumping down against a tree, I got to give it to this myself. I got a pretty good view out of falling down.

In front of the lake acts like a mirror as it reflects the distant setting sun onto me. There is even a family of snow-white rabbits playing on the ice in distance.

So cute.

Looking at the sun, It's getting late. I got to get back soon.

I'm just going to rest for a bit and then go home.

So, I lean back, close my eyes, and just shit myself down for a bit.

Now I get it, this is what my PC felt like after I closed my 150 tabs.

Suddenly, I feel something jump onto my crotch.

"Fuck, my balls!!"

I turn to scan my surroundings to find that it was a rabbit that is frantically running away from the lake with its family.

This doesn't feel right. What's going on?!

I turn to the lake, everything is completely still, unnaturally still.

Even the wind seems to have stopped in fear.

"ROAR!"

The silence is abruptly broken by a grand roar followed by the icy mirror lake splitting apart to reveal a giant sea dragon writhing in pain.

Huh.

We'll at least this is consistent with my bad luck so far...

"ROAR!"

It roars again in pain and anger as it uses its giant maw to pry away something on its body.

Whatever is on it, is releasing black lightning to fry the dragon.

However, in front of the dragon's wrath, the mass of black lightning doesn't seem able to hold on much longer.

It starts losing its grip. Eventually, it's pried off and hurled into the air by the opposing horror.

Completely exposed in the air I recognize it's a jellyfish.

Unable to dodge or defend itself in the sky, the jellyfish can only watch as the dragon launches a ball of icy flames towards it. The ball connects with its target in a bright flash blinding me in the process.

I'm now blinded and paralyzed by fear.

Great.

Come on, body and eyes get a grip there is a huge dragon out there!

In this terrifying situation; I can only continue to lean against the tree as I hear the sounds of munching and clawing.

Eventually, the sounds stop and I tense up even more.

As my eyesight returns I look into icy, hateful, blues pupils bigger than my whole body.

"Holy shit!"

As the dragon leans down to look at me terror and insignificance wash over me.

Simultaneously, An ocean of cold sweat runs down my back along with a river in my pants.

"Sesese!"

After what sounded like a laugh, the dragon's baleful hate suddenly disappears and it turns away.

"ROAR!!"

It roars one last time to scare the last bit of pee into my pants before returning to the depths of the lake.

The behemoth is gone, my adrenaline-filled body carries me back to the village before I can even blink where I walk exhausted and with piss drenched pants through the still bustling streets.

The peaceful atmosphere still engulfs the town in a soothing manner yet It doesn't calm me one bit.

The delicious food stands and children's games seem stupid before what I just experienced.

In the youth residence, I immediately return to my room and fall into my bed. Completely exhausted I just lay there in the fetal position.

But despite all my exhaustion, I can't sleep. My encounter at the lake is all I can think about.

I could have died.

From, now on I'm going to put my heart and soul into the prayer.

Zoo wee mama, this world is terrifying. I need to be strong if I don't want to not come home with wet pants again.

That's my ninja wa- ZZZzzzzzz
