Saturday morning. Ethan had left in a hurry before dawn because of a case he's working on in the Michigan Police Department where he transferred to. Eric left home not quite long to check out the library in the new neighborhood. Elvis is in his room laying in his bed, recovering from the previous day's injury. It's Emily's day off, she's in the kitchen with Elena trying to fix something to eat.
EMILY: Sweetheart, I'll need you to help me get these at the grocery store. Two jars of sugar, a jar of jam, three bags of flour, peanut butter and uhm... I guess we might need some lobsters and cinnamon spices too. We'd run out of them soon.
ELENA: Alright.
EMILY: Do you need to write them down?
ELENA: Nope, I got it.
EMILY: Here's 40 bucks.
(Handing the money to Elena) shop according to your discretion, I trust your judgement.
ELENA: Okay mom. I'll be on my way.
EMILY: I think there's someone at the door.
ELENA: I'll get it. (Walking to the door)
Oh my geez!
It is surprise visit from Zoey. Elena ushers her in and introduces her to her mom, they exchange greetings and she's made comfortable. After a brief chat, Zoey offers to go with Elena to get groceries.
Outside.
"Hey Elena"
ELENA: Hey neighbor.
She eyes Tyler who's at the front of the Holmes fence picking up a newspaper dropped by the newspaper vendor who passes by routinely.
TYLER: Seriously? My name's Tyler. You know that already.
ELENA: Yeah, I know.
TYLER: So what's with the 'neighbor' stuff?
ELENA: Until you stop being annoying, I won't call you by your name. (Not looking at him)
TYLER: I guess you'd have to keep calling me neighbor till we stop being neighbors. (He lets out a chuckle, going back inside)
ZOEY: He's kinda funny.
ELENA: What? He's annoying, I feel like stabbing him. Do you know what he did to me yesterday?
ZOEY: Tell me.
ELENA: I was standing by our boundary fence and he was on the other side, he just came close and said "I know you got blue panties on". The annoying part is that he was right. I dunno how he knew but I was embarrassed.
ZOEY: No way! (Laughing) That's crazy.
What about Elvis? How's his leg now?
ELENA: He's fine. Y'all are acting like he got shot in the leg, he only sprained his ankle.
ZOEY: Well, Elvis is a big boy. He'll be alright.
ELENA: I feel bad for him though.
ZOEY: Why?
ELENA: He was so excited to join the school team and then he got banned on his first day of practice by my dad.
ZOEY: Lemme guess, because of the injury?
ELENA: Good guess. My dad wants to see academic improvement before he lets him off the hook. I bet my dad is expecting to see A's and B's but the Elvis I know, he struggles to get a B minus. I dunno how he's gonna do it.
ZOEY: This is unfair, don't lose faith in him, nothing's impossible. I was this close (bringing her index and her thumb together) to being a dullard in 4th grade and I'd have repeated the class. I lost faith in myself but my dad didn't lose faith in me. He gassed me up to study more.
ELENA: Aw, I'd love to meet your dad.
ZOEY: You can't... (pausing briefly) He died last year July. I was twelve then, rounding off sixth grade.
ELENA: I'm so sorry. Come here.
(She gives Zoey a tight hug)
