Elena and Zoey arrive at the grocery store, talking and walking inside.
ELENA: Nope, no party, just a small get together with my brothers and a few friends, you're invited. I just can't wait for the next two years, I wanna celebrate my sixteenth birthday in grand style.
ZOEY: How about you try to get through your fourteenth first. (Elena chuckles). Thanks for inviting me.
"Hey cuties" A guy skateboards towards them. He does a kick-flip and stops in front of them, picking up his board. Elena smiles at him, impressed.
ZOEY: Holy shit! Maxx! What are you doing here? (She exclaims excitedly like a fan seeing her celebrity crush for the first time)
He's a guy of 5'9 with a slim build, light brown hair, slight dimples and a pair of endearing eyes. He's a freshman jock in Cleave Hills High School.
MAXX: What do people do at a grocery store?
(He smiles)
ZOEY: I dunno... camping, maybe?
MAXX: You're right! I should probably get some wood for fire so we can make s'mores.
ZOEY: Great idea! (They share a laugh)
Elena smiles at their back and forth sarcasm, observing Zoey and how excited she seems just by talking to this dude.
MAXX: Well, I stopped by to get some flour. 15kg thereabout.
ZOEY: Why do you need all that flour?
MAXX: I'll keep some for myself to sniff then I'm gonna be dealing the rest. Word on the street's that this shit is better than crack.
ZOEY: You... you're kidding me, right?
MAXX: Of course. Who the hell sniffs flour?
(They all share a laugh)
ELENA: You almost had me, I won't lie.
MAXX: Gotcha! (He chuckles, then turns to Zoey) Remember I told you a week ago that my dad was opening a new eatery.
ZOEY: Yeah. You did. Wait... don't tell me..
MAXX: Yes, yes. He just bought a building in town and we've launched. It's called 'Velvet Creamies' (He separates his hands in the air like he's spelling out or revealing something invisible)
ZOEY: No wayyyyy!
Still smiling, she and Maxx go on talking for a couple more minutes till her brain reminds her that she's here at the grocery store because she accompanied someone, not to blush at some dude. She glances at Elena, pleading with her eyes. Elena smiles, knowing that her friend is dying to talk to the dude. She excuses herself and goes to grab a shopping cart.
ELENA: one jar of jam, check! Two jars of sugar, check! Three bags of flour, check! Cinnamon spices, I'd just get one, check! What else? Uhm... Damn it! What am I forgetting?
She asks herself while pushing the cart across the item sections. Just then, she sees a girl with a sad pale face, looking confused.
ELENA: Hey there!
(She waves, touched by the girl's pale look)
The girl stares at Elena for a moment, shocked. "You can actually see me?"
ELENA: Of course. You're not transparent nor invisible. Yes I can see you.
She exhales and brightens up, like some sign of relief. "Are you forgetting something?"
ELENA: Yeah. Oh my geez, is it that obvious? Two items I've been trying so hard to remember since the past five minutes. I should have just written them down. Now my mom's gonna be mad.
"She won't. You're human, people forget"
ELENA: You're right. I just wish I didn't forget though. I hate disappointing her.
"I'm getting some peanut butter for myself and I'm willing to try the lobsters in that section. How about you?"
ELENA: Oh my geez! Those are what I've been trying to remember! How did you know?
(She stares at the girl, surprised)
The girl just smiles, saying nothing.
ELENA: Anyway, thanks for your help, I'll go check on my friend. (Pushing her cart away)
Hey! You didn't tell me your name.
(She turns around but doesn't see the girl)
Well, fair enough. I didn't tell her mine either.
Meeting up with Zoey and Maxx at the counter, Maxx is holding two plastic bags, waiting to collect his change. Elena queues up behind him to pay for the items she bought. The attendant hands him his change, he greets Zoey and Elena goodbye, hops on his skateboard and wheels out of the store.
Elena tells Zoey about the girl she bumped into some minutes ago, she mentions that she's seen her in school earlier that week.
While talking, Elena notices two square paper cards falling from her cart. She picks them up, taking a look. Each card has an alphabet on it. One with letter [A], the other with letter [M]. She shows them to Zoey and she too stares at the cards in a confused manner.
ELENA: They're pretty, I'd keep them, even though I've no idea what they mean or how they got into my cart. (She and Zoey leave the grocery store, each holding a plastic bag)
