In front of her was an ancient Babylonian-styled building. Although Catherine had some doubts in her heart, she still chose not to hesitate and pushed the door open to enter.
The familiar hall, the familiar choir platform, the familiar hymns, and... The familiar faces.
Catherine followed behind the mourners and silently recited a mantra to show her reverence.
After the prayer, Catherine looked around and finally found one or two faces that she recognized in the crowd.
She walked to the second row and sat beside a frail old man.
The old man's body seemed to be curled up and he was only wearing a pure black cloak. With a black skull mask on his face, it was hard not to picture him as some sort of devil.
He wore a ring with a silver eagle on his left hand and held an ebony cane on his right. He looked like he was about to kick the bucket, but his temperament was firm and cold.
The old man seemed to have noticed Catherine's arrival, but he did not turn his head. Instead, he said softly, "Welcome home."
"Thank you." Although Catherine had only met him once, she was able to join the Coven only because of the old man beside her.
"How is our old friend now?" Although the man's voice sounded a little breathless, he still held an air of dignity in his voice.
"The Duke is dead. It's my fault." Catherine admitted her mistake softly.
"It's not your fault. It's not Spider's fault either." The man's tone became more and more serious. "Spider wouldn't be angry with you over a puppet."
"I feel that she is." Catherine somewhat doubted the old man's biased conclusion, but she did not expect that it would attract the old man's fierce retort.
"That's because you're useless!"
Everyone's attention was instantly attracted by the old man's sharp and hoarse voice. Inevitably, their attention was turned to Catherine as well.
"Go, complete your own mission, then come back to replace me." The man once again slowed down his tone of speaking, reverting back to an indifferent tone as he gave the order.
"After all these years, I can't help but wonder, did you misjudge me back then?" Thinking of all the things this man had taught her for over 20 years, Catherine still did not have any desire to become the Godmother.
"What a lack of self-confidence!" The man used his cane to hit the marble floor hard, and then said, "How immature of you, my child."
"Okay, I understand what you mean." Catherine was about to leave. The old man seemed to think that she was afraid, but in fact, she just had no desire to take over. She could not stand the old man's arrogant and irritable personality anymore.
Unexpectedly, at this moment, the old man stopped her and handed the bag in front of him to her.
"This is what you want, right?" After Catherine took the bag, he said in a steady and slightly hoarse voice, "I never misjudge people, unless they have lost their way."
Catherine walked out of the church and breathed some fresh air. The atmosphere in the church was too heavy. She was standing at the door when she met Spider, who was about to enter.
"To be honest, this hat really doesn't suit you, my dear." Catherine was just trying to tease the fat woman, but she received a harsh scolding instead.
"Shut up! Don't use your usual flirtatious tricks on me." Spider's anger was written all over her face
"Please, it's just a mourning party. There's no need to be so formal, right?"
Unexpectedly, Spider came forward, looked into her eyes, and said, "That's Godmother you're talking about."
"Then please persuade the old man to not instate another Godmother so soon. I still want to be free and easy for a few more years. Besides, this feeling is a little... Like the feeling of me marrying this old man."
"The rules for Godfather are the rules of the sect. It's the same for everyone, and you're no exception."
"Alright, then let's get down to business. I need your help. You won't refuse the requests and orders from your future Godmother, right?"
Although Spider was still a little cold and even disdainful towards the little girl in front of her, she would not lose her manners because of this. "As you wish, godmother."
