Chapter 12 - Beth’s True Intent

Originally, Catherine only wanted to bend the law to suit herself. She wanted Spider to give up and stop interfering in the matters of the Corning Heights and the Duke. Instead, she wanted to investigate the matter herself. After all, the Duke had been her subordinate.

"As you wish, Godmother." To Catherine's surprise, Spider complied without any resistance. Instead, she chose to turn around and enter the church, joining the prayer and repentance.

Watching her receding figure, Catherine carefully recalled the words that her godfather had just told her. Spider would indeed avoid conflict with her over such a small personal matter.

"He really doesn't misjudge people..." Catherine concluded, imitating her godfather's tone.

Then again, after what happened, Catherine understood that no one in the Coven was directly or indirectly involved in William and Fors' plan. At least for that, Catherine had nothing to worry about.

After returning to the storage room on the first floor of Wellings Magazine, Catherine unceremoniously laid on top of Beth, who was sleeping on the sofa.

"Ah!" Beth was so frightened that she pushed away Catherine, who was lying on top of her. "Are you crazy!? You need a visit to the mental asylum!"

"Stop pretending. I knew you were awake."

Seeing that Beth already knew, Beth simply replied, "You went to the gathering again?"

"Yes. It's the second gathering after more than ten years." It seemed as if Catherine only went to a company dinner, not a large secret society's gathering.

"Seriously, can you tell me something I don't know? What exactly is the Coven?"

"Beth, let's not talk about this now." Catherine lectured her in a high and mighty tone, "It's wrong to pry into other people's secrets, especially since you chose to be complicit in it."

Catherine poured out all the things in the bag – but there was only a phone in it. Beth could recognize it at a glance. It was the phone that Catherine had given to her to find out if it had been hacked.

"I knew you weren't telling me the truth, Beth. Wellings may have hacked my phone's location, but so did you, right? You know my location too."

Beth did not deny it or refute it. Instead, she looked coldly at her former classmate in front of her. "I just want to know what you've been through," She said unusually calmly, "Because now you look like... A very, very insane person."

"The old man is right. You can't trust anyone but yourself, especially those around you." Catherine gradually began to agree with her godfather's paranoid thoughts.

She looked at Beth and then asked in a tone like she was interrogating a criminal, "So, Ms. Beth, can you tell me why you came to Wellings?"

Beth shook her head and sat back on the sofa in frustration. She sighed softly, hoping that she could calm herself down. After a moment, she finally began to speak her mind.

"I'm being targeted." Beth looked at Catherine helplessly, her eyes shining with tears. "A ruthless arms dealer and a drug addict. I wanted to seek help from the Coven union, but I couldn't find any clues, so I could only come to you. Without your help... My life would be in grave danger."

Catherine seemed to realize that her aggressive tone hurt her, so she sat beside Beth and hugged her. She comforted her in a low voice, "It's okay, it'll be over. Everything will be fine."
