The next morning, both Lin Fan and Murong Yue got up early to prepare to head down to the station.
Even though normally Murong Yue would have left the night before, she chose to stay this time since they would be heading to the station together.
Before they left, Murong Yue also made sure to tell Lin Fan about all the different things that he should do and shouldn't do.
She made sure to tell him about all the habits that the chief had to make sure he made the best impression while also making sure that he knew where the exits were, just in case they needed to make a quick escape.
Lin Fan felt like she was making a mountain out a molehill, but he still went along with it. It was actually quite easy for him to remember most of this information since his memory had also gotten better with the increase in intelligence.
It didn't take them long to get to the station since the station was quite close to Lin Fan's apartment. It was so close that Murong Yue's apartment was actually further away, which made Lin Fan curious why she didn't just stay through Sunday before going to work on Monday. But he had always assumed that she would need to go home to prepare for the work week, so he had never questioned it before.
Once they arrived at the station, Lin Fan was surprised to see the reception that Murong Yue got.
"Yue Yue, you're early this morning!" There was a girl in a police uniform who ran up to Murong Yue and gave her a hug.
There were also several guys who waved and greeted her as they walked by, but judging by the way they looked at her, they clearly had other intentions.
Still, Murong Yue greeted each and every one of them with a friendly smile.
This was the part that Lin Fan was surprised by.
Back when they had been in high school and university, she was someone who had been cold to others and only smiled for those that were close to her. Even though there were plenty of guys that wanted to get close to her…
But now, she was open and friendly to everyone which was definitely a change from how she was before. It was so much of a change that he almost wondered why she still stayed with him.
After all, there were quite a few good looking guys that had walked by and greeted her.
Though, after maxing out his charm and seeing himself this morning, Lin Fan had to admit that he looked good as well.
He had actually grown another few inches in the night and had reached 6'2. His face structure had also changed, giving him a much more handsome face. His cheek bones came up, his nose was perfectly curved, and his eyes were sharper, but it was the good kind of sharp that made his eyes seem like they could pierce through someone.
When Murong Yue had seen him early this morning, she had even asked who he was. When he told her who she was, she asked him if he had secretly gone out for plastic surgery in the middle of the night.
Lin Fan was quite happy with his change, but Murong Yue seemed like she wasn't happy for some reason.
During the bus ride in, she kept muttering to herself, "Now he looks like this, he'll definitely get more attention now…"
Lin Fan didn't understand what she meant by that, but he wisely chose not to dig into it.
After all, she was also an E rank quest herself…
It didn't take them long to be shown into the office of the chief since he was the one that had arranged for this meeting, so he already gave instructions to his assistant to let them in when they arrived.
After they came in, both sides just sat there in silence as the chief looked over Lin Fan while Murong Yue glared at the chief, as if she was complaining to him.
There was a bit of silence before the chief said, "Now, I'm sure you're wondering why I asked you to come in."
Lin Fan nodded, but he didn't say a thing since he was waiting to get some information first before revealing some. If he were to speak now, he might accidentally give away something that he might want to keep secret, so it was best to wait and see what the chief wanted before he said anything.
The chief paused after seeing Lin Fan's nod, but then he continued by asking, "Now, in just two days, you were involved in two major incidents. First there was the incident involving the serial killer and then there was the incident involving the two gangs. I don't know if you're considered lucky or unlucky. What do you think?"
Lin Fan could only reveal a bitter smile since he couldn't just say that there was a system behind him.
Lin Fan paused for a second like he was thinking before he said, "Well I would say that I'm lucky since I was able to get out of all those situations alive. Wouldn't you think so?"
The chief narrowed his eyes to look at Lin Fan before breaking out in laughter. After laughing for a bit, he said, "Well, that is certainly a nice way to look at it."
Then he stopped laughing and he revealed a serious look as he said, "Though how you actually survived really is something that is debatable. Putting aside the first case, it would almost seem like you were cooperating with the gangs in the second case, wouldn't it?"
Lin Fan tensed up when he heard this.
No one should know about what really happened, so why did this chief sound like he did know?
Lin Fan prepared his body to make a break for it, but then he decided against it since there was nowhere for him to run. The police were a government organization and even if he did run, what would become of him then?
If he didn't clear up this misunderstanding, then there would be no place for him in society from now on.
So Lin Fan said, "But it only seems that way, that doesn't mean that it really is that way, does it?"
The chief just smiled without saying a thing, as if there was something that was being implied by that smile.
Still Lin Fan just sat there without saying a thing, matching the chief's gaze.
Finally, the chief gave up this idea and said, "Alright, let's just say that it is a coincidence, but no matter what, it seems like you are quite skilled at finding these kinds of people. Well, skilled is not the right way to put it, but it's close enough."
Lin Fan didn't know what to say to this.
The chief didn't mind as he continued, "Though since that's the case, that's a good thing for me."
Lin Fan was confused when he heard these words and he asked, "What do you mean by that?"
The chief didn't answer the question, but rather he began talking like he was talking to himself, "Well, it's expensive to put together investigation squads to find these criminals and there's always the risk of losing my men trying to track them down, or there's the risk of the criminals being alerted and going underground." It was then that the chief turned back to look at Lin Fan and said, "But that is where your powers come in."
Lin Fan was even more confused by this, "I still don't get what you…"
The chief suddenly raised his hand and said, "I can tell that you're still young. While you are quite calm, there is still a bit of impatience in you and that's not a good thing. Sometimes, it's better just to listen than to speak."
Lin Fan didn't ask anything this time and he just sat there listening.
The chief continued with his monologue, "That is where your powers come in."
After a deliberate pause to judge Lin Fan's reaction, the chief continued, "It seems that you have some sort of power that allows you to find these kinds of people. Rather, it's almost as if they're coming to find you, but that's a good thing since that is what is safer. If they're chasing after you, they aren't going after my men."
Lin Fan had an awkward look like he didn't know how to feel about this. The chief was basically cursing him to be chased by all these criminals…
The chief once again paused before saying with a smile, "Of course, I'm not saying this in a hurtful way, I'm saying this in a way that will benefit both you and me."
This time, he finally paused as if he was waiting for Lin Fan to respond.
So Lin Fan asked, "What do you mean by that?"
The chief said with the same smile, "How about you and I make a deal?"
Lin Fan had a doubtful look as he asked, "What deal?"
The chief said, "It's a very simple deal. I want you to use your powers to find these people and when you have to deal with them, I'll give you all the police support that you need."
Lin Fan was taken aback by this sudden offer since it was exactly what he was hoping for.
After all, if he could have support from the gangs and the police, he would be protected in both the underworld and the normal world.
But there would always be a catch to these kinds of deals.
