This phrase never made much sense to the Wandering One. It has explored the abyss for far too long. The quoted abyss offers universes, dying stars that expand them and other countless cycles that destroy to create then create to destroy. the abyss never stares back. The abyss is whatever you see. Whatever you make. You are simply seeing yourself.
