Chapter 160 - Shattered Shield, Shattered Heart

Trijunn cackled. Eyes flared back to life in their murderous era. Warriors screamed calamity, howling over each other while overpowering Infinus' forces.

Up above, a burning beast with eight wings danced across the skies. It picked a location to crash into, then brought down its divine power.

Dozens of Light Legion warriors died to extreme burns or from being shredded into tiny bits. Which only served to fuel the ever burning flames that kept the Light Legion running.

As the beast ascended into the skies for another attack, Trijunn howled. He picked up his pace, then leapt up to greet it. His Third Rule, the ability to take down paranormal entities, kept him safe.

It tried to shake off the attacker. Fires burned brighter, forming spikes to pierce Trijunn's hands with. But it was useless. He laughed, revealing his teeth.

"How do you taste, hmm?" Trijunn taunted.

With a tug and a swift motion, the single orange eye the beast had got shredded up by his teeth. It instantly got swept away by the wind, returning to nothingness.

Down below, Infinus retreated. They hurried to get away from Trijunn's landing zone so they wouldn't get taken out by a furious Feral.

Adrenaline pumped his veins. Giving him an easy time for an easy landing. As he slowly lifted himself back on his feet, a protector called out to him.

"Oh! The 'mighty goliath striker,' member of Alise's order and great Feral of Dire's command. You've come to fight us in our home?" Decka shouted.

Trijunn grinned. "Traitors! Your sunset became our warrant to slaughter you. How do you want it? Bite or swipe, hmm?"

Quinn stepped forward, closer to the advancing Feral. "We wanted our children to grow up with respect, not faceless comments."

Out from the tides of clashing warriors, a white figure stepped out of the hordes. His crown perfectly reflected the power he had, while the dripping gold-blood masked his pride.

"That begs the question," Verick slammed his mace down. "Who's disrespectful and who's sensitive?"

Instantly, Decka charged toward him. Rivalry with a distant leader, motivated his attack. Trijunn and Quinn warm up their bodies into the powerhouses that they are.

Decka took one final step before a powerful dash forward. The face of a beaten shield eyed Verick down as it approached without hesitation. Only to be met with the shoulder of a fabled war-fighter.

Verick used his other arm to grab onto the shields of the shield. He got a tight grip onto its highest point, prompting Decka to activate the blades.

Two sharp edges erupted out of its sides. Due to good armor, Verick only felt a push - a minor annoyance. But that only encouraged him to continue with his assault.

Using his other hand, he grappled onto the bottom of the shield. Verick yanked the entire barrier closer, before suddenly pushing. Breaking Decka's grip on his defense.

It detached from Decka's gauntlets as he fell back. Surprised and shocked about what just happened. It was a dire situation, even for him. Getting his shield taken away could be fatal.

Verick spun around, picking up momentum. Before dashing closer to Decka and slamming his shield across the side of his face. Sending the Infinus elite tumbling down.

"Get up. I demand you to," Verick tossed his shield to him. "I will only accept your death if you bare a weapon in your hand."

While on his way down, Decka noticed Quinn was struggling against Trijunn. He saw this as the opportunity to help his lover. An invisible barrier formed around her, a shield.

Keeping her safe from her opposer's attacks while hurting Trijunn. Except it didn't change anything. It counted as something paranormal, thus making him immune.

"Look at you, Decka. I thought of you highly. We could have been buddies, you and I. But you decided to leave," Verick snarled.

To this, Decka bolted up. He quickly attached his shield back onto his gauntlet, then went in for a strike. Landing perfectly between Verick's eyes.

As a follow up, Decka brought the blunt shield against his stomach. Forcing the attacking Verick to bow as means to protect himself. Only to receive another powerful blow to the side of his head.

"Quinn is my wife, Verick. Imagine who I would be if I denied her that wish of moving away from those insults? The only thing you know about women is your useless sister," Decka spat.

Rage took over Verick like water to a mold. Drowning away his every bit of mercy he had left. Turning a battle into something more personal.

"I never talked about your wife, Decka. But you - you crossed the line. Tell me, have you ever felt your only safety being taken away from you right before your very eyes?" Verick's grim voice asked.

His response was another dash. Quickly closing the distance between foes. Only to hear a sharp crack and his world falling apart.

While blinded by his shield, Verick geared up his mace. Striking its face as hard as he could, shattering it into pieces. Decka felt himself losing ground.

An unrelenting mace followed him down. The following blow was damaging enough to daze Decka. Surprisingly, that was the most injured he got.

Verick got on top of him, bringing his mace's handle down to his neck before pulling up. "Do you feel it? The cold metal rubbing against your cold skin."

Decka watched through his hazy vision. Trying his best to buy time for recovery. Which seemed to work. Verick continued to stare down at him.

"Nature takes things away from us - things that we love," Verick glanced up in front of him. "We are nature."

Trijunn rolled back onto his feet, a wide grin of a killer attached to his face.

"My sister, she is my ONLY happiness, Decka. How about Quinn? Is she your only happiness, too?" Verick's malicious voice asked.

Quinn dashed away from Trijunn, only to be caught in a shield bash of a Light warrior. Keeping her in place for the advancing Feral. His eyes bloodier than ever.

Decka struggled to speak. Instead of words, he grunted. Trying to break free from his trance. Verick stared down at him with sadistic enjoyment.

"Tell me, do you really love her?" Verick insisted.

Trijunn tossed Quinn against the wooden walls of a nearby home. He drove the base of his foot straight into her stomach, before driving his forearm into her chin.

"You seem so uneasy to answer. Enjoy the show," Verick let go of Decka. "This is a threat."

Quinn landed in front of them. She struggled to summon more beasts to aid her in the conflict. Each one she threw out, Trijunn effortlessly slaughtered.

Upon seeing his feeble prey, an urge for blood stormed his mind. The natural instincts of a predator. He pounced on her, pinning Quinn against the gravel road using his knees.

She let out a fear-inducing scream as Trijunn sunk his teeth into her throat. Ripping out a large chunk before swallowing it with disgusting satisfaction.

As she died, Quinn fell back. Looking at Decka with utter terror in her dying eyes. That fiery smile vanished, replaced with fear. Everything in her world, including her child, came to an end.

Without a functioning body, it couldn't pass its embryo stage. Leaving Decka alone in the world. Something he saw and understood.

It was enough to break him. Bringing him to his lowest point mentally. Confusion took its toll on him the instant he saw Quinn die.

"Here's the kick. She is dead, my sister is not," Verick insulted.

Decka fell silent. The reality of things took over like a hurricane. Tears formed in his eyes, finally cracking the man he was.

A sharp pain pierced his heart. No matter how much he wished it was the tip of a blade, it wasn't. This was his durable heart shattering for once.

Through every siege, conflict, war, battle, defense, it endured. Tanking everything brutal Koroth threw at it. Until now. Everything felt fake to him. A dream - no, a nightmare.

Defeated, Decka let go of all his strength. Letting the guilt of not assisting his wife take over. Tears rolled down his eyes. Bringing rain to the desert.

"If this isn't Infinus' end, then please let it at least be my own," Decka thought to himself.
