Chapter 3 - The Citadel Calls

***Titus***

I went to school that morning and left with the other kids. Today was the day where my future would be decided. I just wanted at least five pages. I don't care about being the greatest in the world, or even in my class. I just want to make a better life for myself.

When we got there we all got off the carriage and walked single file to the entrance. We were told we would have to wait ten minutes while the group before us finished up. While we were waiting we saw Jol's carriage pull up. When he got out Wels started to yell at him.

" Hey Jol gets over here, you were almost late."

Jol smiled and walked his way towards us his parents headed to the observers' line.

"Almost late and late are two different things. While you're at it why don't you just go tell everyone inside too."

Everyone started to laugh as Wels had a reputation for being a loudmouth. Jol wasn't as nervous as everyone else, but I could see he was worried about something. About that time a guard came out and began to announce the order of summoning.

"Let's begin, line up as I call your name. Auburn, Calus,..., Wels, Verona, Jol, ... and Titus."

We walked in single file until we reached the altar. It was a large circular configuration with pillars around the outside. The pillars had symbols on them from the floor two the celling. The dome overhead allowed very little light to pash through. There was a table in the middle with candles on either side and a sheet of paper.

The circle in the center of the Citadel served as a link to the library of Hell. Once one fooled the demon into a contract one's talent would determine how many pages of that demon's grimoire one would get. Then a guard called out for the first person to come.

"Auburn report to the summoning station!"

She walked up to the table and got on her knees. She lit both the candles and cut her thumb with the summoning knife. She placed her finger on the paper and the paper absorbed all the blood, like a vampire. She then took the paper and lit each end on fire.

A loud noise was heard as an ethereal body formed in the air. The body of a demonic owl. Then it transformed into six pages and flew into her hands. The paper which absorbed the blood did not burn in the fire. Instead, it hardened and as the pages flew towards here it caught them and made them part of her grimoire. She looked happy and the next person was called as the paper was replaced.

Around 40 people had gone and only two people had gotten less than five. They both got four. They seemed devastated. Everyone was doing good. Most of the class got six pages. Some got seven. One girl got eight. Her name was Rillis. Before we knew it Wels turn had come up.
