Chapter 6 - Ashes

***Titus***

I felt awful, I felt sick. A single page my grimoire had a single page and it wasn't even a good monster like a Hellhound. I got a single page of a ash wolf. The entire event went by like a blur, someone came out and apologized about the failure of the materials, but informed me that everyone only gets one chance and that the man responsible for checking the quality of the papers would be fired. I thought I would feel angry, and I mean I did just not as angry as I felt like I should have been. I felt something I hadn't felt before purposelessness. I had trained my whole life in that stupid orphanage to join the military and later the guards. That was what had ben drilled into me since i was a child and now it was all ripped away. When I got back to the orphanage the caretakers just looked at me with pity. Never once no matter how much anyone struggled in the exercises I had never seen them look at someone with pity. I hated it.

When I got to my room I looked at the grimoire, the emptiness felt... awful. I looked at the single page I had to my name and did the only thing I could I tried to read it.

***Grimoire Pages are written in demonic script. Each demon has its own unique witting style or "accent" if you would. This means that you have to learn to read there own writing making it impossible to easily read others grimoires as you would need to learn to read a new language.***

***New grimoire pages can be either created or stolen. As for creation you need to read and understand what is written on the other pages to create more as you are essentially tying down a demons soul to grimoire. As for stealing pages you don't actually take the pages physically. If someone you kill has the same type of animal as you then yours may consume the soul of the other demon. Since this is done by the human it links the soul growth to the grimoire and "steals the pages"***

I did all the things I had to do in my last week at the orphanage as well as trying to read the page. It wasn't like regular reading it didn't need translated. It was more like my soul started to understand the page. Within the week I was able to finish the page and figure out what my ability was. It was Wolf's Eye. I still have to enlist in the millitary, but unlike before instead of being qualified for training I have to go straight to the Infantry and even though its not officially named, people with less than three pages are put into the "fodder" regiments. The 12th, 13th, and 14th brigades are exclusively people like me who have few pages and are not seen as worth enough to put any resources into.

So as the week closed I got my pack and walked out of the orphanage, I left earlier in the morning to avoid having to be around the other kids when they signed up. I walked up to the enlistment office and went to the registration desk.

A voice rang out "Well young man are you looking to join the infantry?"

"Yes, the 12th Brigade." I said worrying what his reaction would be.

"Ahh, how old are you" He looked at me with that same look that I got at the orphanage, pity.

"15, and I have One page."

He looked down and wrote some things and then gave me one last look as he said "Alright then head down the hall and in the third door on the left wait there for someone to come get you."

And so I waited and someone came. Loaded me on a carriage with some other people around my age. No one spoke, there was an air of accepting fate. We traveled for the whole day before arriving at a military base with a large twelve on the gate. We got out and filed in.

We were greeted by a short man, his eyes seemed empty.

He walked to the middle of us and said something I didn't quite expect "Listen, there are three things you need to know while at camp. First, drills are once a week, Monday at 10. Second, Rations are every night at 6. Third and finally, no fighting in this camp."

And with that he left I expected a lot more order, but this placed looked like the slums. No it was pretty quite as well. No one seemed fat or muscular. Everyone was the same depressingly slim. With that I walked to my barracks. Me and the others I arrived with shared barrack 8. So I went to my bed and did the one thing I Knew to do try to understand my page better.
