The first sunrise of the summer season in the province of Tokisebu lays a vast and inexhaustible sighting of nature. Within it is a terrace of rice fields and the modest town of Basakagu-shi in the Subu region, home of junior high school student Sagiri Hidero, which means beautiful and unique, daughter of the municipality mayor Mitsuha Hidero, meaning light feathers.
Sagiri, an athletic, happy-go-lucky, and energetic girl, finds herself alone on Mount Napua-tori, listening to the sound of what she calls lost spirits believed to be voices of the forgotten medieval city of Babylon.
Rumor has it that guardians of Babylon come to the peak in search of stray spirits of those who have passed away to accompany them to light and peace. For the province of Tokisebu, it is old folklore that ancestors used to tell to their children for them to ponder on the meaning of life and death in this world.
