Now alone, Allan read the notifications that were blinking in a corner of his vision for a while.

You have leveled up
Your relationship with Head Librarian Carl has risen to Friendly
Allan wasn't too surprised by the notifications.
He has read the same book for six hours, even if it wasn't a complicated one, he has been reflecting on its contents for a long time.
Allan was level 1 when he started reading, which means that he spent six hours "grinding", it was no wonder that he levels up.
In fact, this was one of the reasons why there weren't a lot of players in the library, using this method was slow, at least in the early levels, it was a lot faster to go to the fields outside the town. In the time Allan spent going to level 2, others would have reached levels 5-6.
About his relationship with Carl, a post on the official forum said that it was very easy to gain the trust of the NPC of Tutorial Island, but it was impossible to go past Respected.
Outside the tutorial, it was a lot harder. In fact, nobody has reached the friendly level using the normal means yet.
Well, it wasn't anything surprising, in real life you wouldn't become friends with someone you just meet.
Other methods of obtaining trust are joining a faction or saving that NPC's life, but they have downsides. For example, if an assassin is trying to kill an NPC and you stop him/her, then the relationship with the victim would be raised to Friendly or Respected, but the relationship with the assassin would become Unfriendly, Hostile, or even Hated.
If the relationship with an NPC becomes Hostile, he may attack you if you provoke him, above that is kill on sight. The same can be said with factions if you join a faction. For example, in the country's army, you will be Friendly with the other soldiers and Respected by the citizens of the territory, but you will also be Unfriendly or Hostile with the countries with bad relations with your country and Hated by bandits and enemies of the territory.
After Allan finish reading the notifications, he observed the sky and saw it was dark, then he hurriedly went to the inn the old man recommended.
Allan walked through the streets of the town while thinking about the book he just read.
The book wasn't too long so he finished reading it in five hours, the rest of the time he was pondering over its content or reading again parts he didn't understand, but that wasn't a reason for not going back another day to read it again to understand it perfectly.
The author explained the book's content very clearly and one could digest it easily.
Still, as Carl said at the beginning, it isn't a sword manual and if he wanted to learn to swing a sword, he would need more things, mainly a footwork technique or a sword manual, but the thing he needs the most is practice, theory only can make him go that far.
Ideally, Allan would have wanted to have an instructor but he knew that it wouldn't happen, this was Tutorial Island after all. Allan sighed softly as he advanced for the roads of the town.
While he traversed the alleys and small corners far away from the main street, he saw a little sign of what was the inn that Carl has pointed, Allan started to grow an ominous feeling.
You can see this in multiple RPG games, the main character explores the city of the game and in a remote corner in the border of the city you find a shop or a pub, or somewhere like that in which you find powerful weapons or mysterious treasures, or legendary quests.
Allan opened the doors of the inn, and his premonition came true, … the place was filled with players.
"Hey, what are you looking at?"
"Hello, I would like to stay here for the night"
"Honey, I am where you said, are you sure this is the place?"
"Oe, who did push me?
And not one or two, all he had in sight were players. At least twenty players were struck inside the entrance of this little inn.
It was like repeating the scene of this afternoon in the Martial Hall.
This wasn't that the servers were full, quite contrary there were a lot fewer players than what one could expect of a new good game.
Allan had counted around two hundred, maybe a bit more.
That wasn't a lot, in most games, especially at the beginning, there are a lot of players flooding the games. You can't walk two steps without bumping between themselves.
One of the most famous examples of this is the killing-bunnies armies in the beginning leveling zones (It's a massacre).
The problem is that all of them were in the same places, in the fields, the Martial Hall, the library, the town's shops, and now here.
Allan Knew these players would get nothing. A lot of players have already been in this town before them and all of them left bare-handed.
Tutorial Island is, only that, a tutorial. One can't expect to find anything unique here. It would be like in a RPG game you get legendary swords from killing slimes.
Seeing how crowded it was, Allan was sure he wouldn't sleep here even with the old man's note. This was a small inn that at most can house eight people, and from the vibes, they were already rented.
Still, Allan would try it. It would be rude for the old man who took the time for writing this note to not use it.
So, Allan walked around the players (If that can be called walking) to the counter. After a minute he finally saw the inn worker and approached her.
"Excuse me, I have com-"
"Enough!!!! I already have said it!! We don't have rooms. Get out!!!"
"No wait, I've been told b-"
"I don't care. If there aren't rooms, there aren't rooms!!!!"
At that moment a group of armed people cladded in armor entered in the inn. Some players noted them quickly and shouted.
"The guards! Everybody run!"
Almost every player that enter the game had heard about the town guards. In Tutorial Island the guards are an inviolable existence. That's because the max level a player can reach here is level 10, but even the weakest guard is level 40, everyone who tried to attack them was a dead man.
The death penalty in Idle Online was a level and some time out, a standard penalty in these games.
Dead wasn't that bad, after all, it was relatively easy to level up to level 10. The real problem came when you were arrested. If the guards got you alive, you would be sent to prison. The worse the crime the longer you were there, only you and a countdown in a tiny cell.
Nobody wanted to be sent there, especially the top players, every second there was a second lost and if you stayed there long enough you would start to lose levels.
The worst thing was that the penalty time only counted if you stayed online, the moment you get out of the game the countdown stopped. That was a nightmare for all players. In prison you can do nothing, you are alone in a cell without your equipment.
One man walked in front of the rest of the guards and said:
"Attention!!! For the crime of public disturbs all of you are under arrest, anyone who resists will be killed. Arrest all these people!"
"Yes Sir!!"
In one moment, the guards pounced on the players. Everyone tried to run but the level difference is an inscrutable wall.
"Let me go!!"
"Hey, what are you doing?"
"You can't do this to me"
Except for one or two players who started running earlier, the rest were caught in seconds.
The reason the ones that escaped did it was because there were only ten guards. They let them escape because they weren't worth the effort.
"W-WAIT! It's a mistake, I only wan-"
"Shut up!!!"
Allan tried to explain to the guard but he was apprehended along with other players.
Seeing the screaming mob being dragged across the town, Allan knew that the guards wouldn't listen to anything he has to say.
Allan could do nothing but follow and pray for the best.
