Chereads / The Peak of the Human Race / Chapter 3 - Archery

Chapter 3 - Archery

After a short nap on the comfortable bed, Alexander felt rejuvenated. He slowly crept off the bed and sobered himself, he grabbed his short bow and slung his quiver onto his back. He grabbed the 15 arrows and dropped them into the quiver.

He decided to go hunting today.

He had seen the prowess of the mutant golden retriever yesterday and he felt like he could take on some other creatures, just not the strong ones.

He wanted to improve his archery skill so he had to start practicing.

He moved about on the second floor, he was searching for a suitable place to practice his archery.

The place needed to be spacious, long enough for him to practice shooting but most importantly, it needed to be safe.

It would not benefit him if he was attacked in the middle of training.

A while later, he found a long corridor along the 2nd floor and he decided to place the wooden piece he removed from the ground as a target for his aiming practice, he used a cheap and regular kitchen knife to carve out circles.

He then moved to a distance of around 20 yards.

Drawing his bow, he took a deep breath and focused.

After the bowstring was drawn to a certain length, he released the arrow. It flew and rippled in the air, the sound of the arrow whistling was loud.

The arrow barely hit the wooden piece… much less the target.

"Not a very good start but with practice, i should be able to improve quickly."

Alexander already resolved himself to practice his archery skills diligently. There was no way he was giving up after one arrow shot.

Following the first shot, Alexander fired his bow over and over again. after all 15 arrows were fired, he would walk back to the target and pull out all 15 arrows before walking back to the 20 yard line.

——————————————————————————

A week had passed since then and Alexander was now able to hit accurate bullseyes one arrow after the other.

His food supply was running low so he decided it was time to put his skills to the test. After the strenuous training, he felt his physique had improved and his strength had grown.

He was simply incomparable to the him before.

He grabbed the 15 arrows and breathed in and out.

He calmed himself down before descending into the first floor of the building. There it was a barren land, no humans or creatures could be seen.A few skeletons laid in the middle of the streets .

Alexander moved forward, trying to build up his mental resistance to blood and gruesome sights.

He wasn't a machine ready for slaughter, his conscience still had him retching at such a sight, but his mind and will stopped him from vomiting.

He readied his bow and nocked an arrow, then he slowly crept forward… into the thick undergrowth.

In the rainforest like environment, Alexander found many types of strange looking fruit. He didn't dare consume the fruit there and then.

If it was poisonous it would mean imminent death.

Alexander was not about to risk his life eating weird fruits he just found out about.

He grabbed the fruits and placed them in his duffel bag before he carried on moving forward. The rainforest area did not cover much ground, only a bit of the long and wide street that was encompassed by rows of tall buildings that stood on both sides of the street.

Alexander walked for half an hour before he saw a mutated boar,it was strolling in the thick undergrowth and oblivious to the fact that someone was watching it.

The boar was peacefully chewing on some purple colored fruits. Alexander made a mental note to himself that these fruits could be eaten.

If a boar ate them without restraint, that meant that there was most likely no poison in them.

Alexander held up his bow and drew the bowstring, he aimed at the head of the boar. Alexander was trying to finish off the boar without any pains and he wanted to do it cleanly by shooting the brains of the boar.

He drew the bowstring all the way back and he focused.

tsiu!

The arrow slipped out from Alexander's grip, the arrow whistled into the air. It plunged into the head of the boar before it even realized what had happened.

"phew… luckily my skills held up to the test…"

Alexander said with a smirk on his face. He was safisfied with today's hunt.

Alexander didn't want to dilly dally anymore in a dangerous place like this, he hurriedly dragged his game back to the building he was residing in and he manually skinned the animal.

He learned how to skin a boar from the videos he had watched before on his phone and he roughly followed that guide.

After he skinned the boar, he cut off all the edible pieces of meat the boar could offer, he knew these pieces of meat would not last long without a refrigerator but he had no choice.

All he could do was to place the meat in a cooling bag and hope for the best.

Electricity was no longer being supplied and ice could not be made, Alexander was also running out of water soon so he needed to find a steady stream of water that could be used for collecting water.

Hygiene was also a requirement. Alexander had not showered for more than six months, this was an issue that always bugged him. The pungent smell of blood blocked out his own body odor but he still wanted to be clean.

Thus, his goals for tomorrow were to find a clean stream of water.

The sun had risen on the second day of the week, and Alexander had already set out in search for water.

The rainforest held much water in its soil so he could not depend on the ground's humidity for a general location for water.

He could only use his eyes and ears to watch out for any clear stream of water.

After 2 hours of searching, he had found it. A river that stretched pretty long across the forest. The river was also five meters wide, it was quite the discovery. Alexander did not know if. the water was sage or not so he lurked in the bushes near the river.

After 15 minutes, a group of three boars stumbled across the river and they started drinking from it.

The boars were about to leave when suddenly

tsiu!!!

The sound of an arrow whistling in the air tore through the skull of one of the boars, it died instantly and collapsed on the ground.

The two other boars were alerted but they only had a general direction of where the sound came from.

They charged over with all their strength, to avenge their fallen brother.

squeal!

The boars cried in anger, they rammed into a bush but didn't hit anything. Surprise overtook them before suddenly, another boar dropped to the ground, lifeless.

It was dead as well, with an arrow through its ears.

The last boar knew it wasn't able to survive so instead it turned to the skies and was about to release the loudest and longest squeal it could muster.

But before that could happen, an arrow tore through the air, coming from the skies. It ripped into the spine of the boar and through it's heart.

It had died just like that.

"Phew! Thank god i killed it in time. It would've been bad if it attracted all the beasts in the surrounding area…"

Alexander breathed a sigh of relief before he went and climbed down the tree he was camping on. It was precisely because that he was on a tree, could an arrow drop from the sky at such speeds.

He then took out the 16 empty water bottles that he had and filled them up to the brim with the clean river water before he placed them all into his duffel bag again.

He then retrieved the three arrows that were used and washed the blood of them in the river before he started dragging the boars back towards base.

Along the way he had left markings on the trees that would get him back home. After 30 minutes, he had reached home safely with the three boars in tow.

"Another long day is over. I've secured water and food for the next few days, i should carry on with my training…"

Alexander could now hit a bullseye from 32 meters away. This was a big improvement from when he first started barely hitting the target from 18 meters away. The distance had nearly doubled!

"Yes… i should get back to training…"

Alexander mumbled to himself before he picked up his bow to move 35 meters away, he then started to practice his archery again…
