Chereads / The Peak of the Human Race / Chapter 5 - Devour

Chapter 5 - Devour

Ding!

[You have received the Legendary passive trait, !]

"Woah!"

'That sounds really stupid! am i just going to be a gluttonous fellow?'

'what!'

Alex knew he shouldn't jump to conclusions but he just couldn't help it. After all, what Legendary trait was called 'Devour' right?

He calmed himself after 10 seconds and asked the system as nicely as he could.

"System! What good is this 'Devour' trait? What can it do?"

Ding!

[The Legendary passive trait 'Devour' allows you to instantly convert pills into Exp points. Normally, a cultivator consumes a pill and he needs to spend hours, if not days in order to convert all the medicinal properties into a cultivation base. But Host! You will be able to just throw it into your mouth like candy! And still be able to get Exp points!]

"WOAHH!"

"That's awesome! i'm sorry for badmouthing you 'Devour'! please don't leave me!"

[I'm not done yet Host! The 'Devour' passive also makes it so when you consume the meat of a beast, you wil be able to gain some of it's strength! The stronger the beast when it was alive, the better! However, be cautious, as if the beast's energy is too much, your body will explode upon consumption!]

"What?!"

'Doesn't that mean that i can indefinitely increase my strength just by eating meat?!'

Alex slowly looked towards the pile of meat infront of him. He was almost drooling at this pile.

[ of course it can! However, the stronger you are in contrast to the beast, the weaker it's potency. Work hard Host! ]

'Wait! i just spoke in my mind but the system could hear me?'

[Yep, Host! As long as you have the intention, the System will answer your questions!]

'Oh… I see now…'

Alexander was about to move on to consuming the meat of the beasts but he realized there were still two more system features he had yet to discover.

'I might as well finish everything in one go right?'

So he shouted in his mind,

'Shop!'

Ding!

[ Shop

1. Pills

2. Passive traits

3. Active skills

4. Cultivation techniques

5. Elixirs

6. Locked….]

The shop was simple. It showed Alex a list of things separated into their own individual segments that's sorted the purchasable items neatly.

There were many more locked segments but the System decided to minimize them.

"hmmm…"

Alex wondered which segment he should check out.

'I still don't have a cultivation technique. Maybe i should buy one from the System…'

With that short decision, another mental command was stated

'Cultivation techniques!'

Ding!

[ Cultivation techniques :

Common cultivation techniques ;

1. Basic body strengthening technique. (100)

2. Basic earth energy technique. (200)

3. Basic wind energy technique. (200)

4. Basic fire energy technique. (350)

5. Basic water energy technique. (350)

6. Basic lightning energy technique. (500)

7. Basic Solar force technique. (1,000)

8. Basic Lunar force technique. (1,000) ]

"???"

"That's it?"

Alexander found himself at a loss because… there were simply too little techniques!

Their prices were exorbitant as well! Alex was not a spend thrift and the prices stated were much more expensive than the common lottery price.

'I don't even know how much points i can get per kill…'

"Forget about it! I don't even have any points to spend anyway."

He looked to the System panel and saw there was one last area he hadn't checked out.

With a shout…

"Quests!"

Ding!

[Quests :

1. Reach Warrior stage 2.

2. Kill 100 boars.

3. cultivate for 10 hours straight.

4. Kill 100 wolves.

5. Kill a Tyrant Bear. ]

The quests listed above were all that Alex had access to.

The quest panel didn't show anymore quests after that. As if signaling to Alex that he was too weak to accept other quests…

Alex wanted to know more about the quests than just their quest titles. With a quick will the quest he wanted to know more about expanded into a detailed text box.

[Reach Warrior stage 2:

Increase your rank.

Rewards : Low Body Tempering Pill ]

Alex saw the box and was intrigued by the 'Low Body Tempering Pill'.

He wanted to know more about the pill. It's effects, it's medicinal efficacy, it's appearance and it's rarity.

"System! Can you tell me more about this 'Low Body Tempering Pill'?"

[The host will have to acquire the object to know more information about it.]

"Ugh…"

Alex knew he needed answers, but answers needed strength. He quickly expanded the rest of the quests and their detailed text boxes quickly filled up his vision.

[Kill 100 boars:

kill 100 boars with your own strength.

Rewards: 2 Low Body Tempering Pills. ]

[ Cultivate for 10 hours straight:

Cultivate for 10 hours straight without being disturbed by external forces. Timer will reset upon discontinuation of cultivation.

Rewards : Increase in cultivation speed by +1 ]

As for the rewards of this quest, Alex had no idea how it affected him. But an increase in something was good right? He could only assume for now.

[Kill 100 wolves:

Kill 100 wolves with your own strength.

Rewards: 5 Low Body Tempering Pills. ]

[Kill a Tyrant Bear:

Slay a Tyrant Bear with your own strength.

Rewards : Middle Body Tempering Pill. ]

After reading through the text boxes, Alex knew the 'Middle Body Tempering Pill' was an upgraded version of the 'Low Body Tempering Pill'.

What the effects of these pills were? Alex had no clue. But since the phrase 'body tempering' was inside its name, he assumed it helped to strengthen his body.

Alex had read tons of cultivation novels before, he should know these basic terminologies. But thoughts of survival in this new world had made cultivation terminologies the least of his priorities.

For now… Strength!

Alex turned and looked at the stockpile of boar, wolf and crocodile meat.

He walked over to the stockpile and grabbed a boar limb before roasting it over a fire he started with some dried leaves.

The boar leg was quickly cooked and emanated an enticing smell.

Alex started drooling at the sight, he spared himself from the visual torture and dug in. The juicy meat of the boar was soft and tender, allowing his teeth to cut into the flesh unhindered.

The meat was too tasty.

Since the passive trait 'Devour' allowed Alex to neither be full nor hungry, eating had become a source of becoming stronger and a luxury.

Who didn't want to become stronger whilst eating delicacies?

Alex thought no further and chomped onto the next piece of meat his hands could grab onto.

Suddenly, he felt an energy flow through his body, although it was minuscule and not worthy of notice.

The energy was refined and spread though out his entire body. Alex felt a tiny increase in his strength.

[+1 Strength!]

'woahhh!!'

'So this is 'Devour'… '

A smirk grew on Alex's face.

This night was the most unforgettable night in his life. The food was overflowing, so was his strength.

Ding!

Ding!

The notifications kept popping up like insects in a swarm.

[ +1 Strength! ]

[ +1 Defense! ]

[ +1 Strength! ]

....

The next morning.

Dried bones of the remaining scraps of last night's feast was seen rolling about on the floor. The apartment was suffocating with the smell of cooked meat.

Alex was snoring on the floor with an amused expression on his face. He seemed tired after stuffing his face full of meat last night.

A while later, Alex woke up. Scratching his head and ruffling his hair around, he say the bones of the beasts he had eaten last night. He planned to take out the trash and start his hunting after that.

After all, the more he ate, the stronger he'd get.

He washed his face with some fresh water he had collected and moved out after discarding the bones by yeeting them far away.

The jungle was bustling with activity, the chirping of birds loud but the roars of beasts louder.

Alex held his trusty hunting bow and nocked an arrow onto it.

He pulled back the string and then -

Whoosh!

The arrow whistled by and pierced a boar through the center of its skull.

Ding!

[ + 10 points! ]

"Oh! So killing an ordinary boar gives you 10 points? Let's go on a slaughter! Hehehehehe"

Alex looked like a madman as he laughed to himself eerily.

[ Kill 1/100 Boars. ]

The quest was updated immediately after the death of the boar. It seemed the system was quick with its updates.

Whilst Alex was basking in the happiness granted by the death of the boar, he remembered something.

'Oh! I haven't checked my status! How dumb can i be?'

"Status!"

[ Alexander

Exp : 0(+)

Points : 10

Warrior stage 1

Strength : 612 kg

Defense : 287 kg ]

"Woahhh!"

Alex looked ecstatic after seeing his strength had increase by more than a hundred kilograms! His defense had also increased greatly!

After marveling at his status awhile longer, it was time to continue with the hunt…
