Chapter 20 - gusu bunnies

Gusu Bunnies

I approach the Gusu Zither with utmost respect, placing it on my lap, I strike the first chord and in an inter dimensional universe, playing the Zither opposite to mine is Gusu Lan's First Female Elder Lan Yi.

Sucked out of the vortex, Wei Ying holds my shoulder to stabilize me and in unison we turn to our elder.

"Who are you?" She questions with a pleasent voice and we introduce ourselves. With a kind smiles she greets us and just then we notice little bunnies running around sporting the Gusu Band on their forehead.

The exhilaration in Wei Ying's eyes makes it a picturesque that time would frame forever. When my eyes seek elder Lan Yi, her smile speaks worth million words. She caught me staring at him. Not wanting to embarrass myself more, I seek her attention as to why is she inside this cave. That is when she reveals the entire history of the Yin Iron.

A metal which destroyed all the clans and with her powers she has been protecting one of the pieces.

"I can only do so much. Everyday my powers are diminishing, I need your help to find the rest and seal them all once again for no one should ever use them."

"Please don't worry Elder Lan Yi, we both shall find all the missing piece and help to restore the balance just as before." Having faith in our oath, Elder Lan Yi hands over the broken seal to me.

Little did we all know that was never going to happen.

Her soul disappears and Wei turns towards me "Lan Zhan."

"Hm?"

"We can't let them be here all alone." Pointing towards the bunnies he continues, "We need to set them free." Picking one up delicately his compassionate eyes meets mine with a plea, "They have the right to live and here they're so lonely." His voice is solemn and I reminisce the young Wei I once met.

"We can't bring them back to Gusu. Uncle won't allow." I remind him. Not one to be flustered he keeps up his plea, "Please."

Unable to keep up the charade I turn away.

"Lan Zhan," his voice breaks my heart "please just look at them?"

Oh Wei.

Without turning back I say, "Let me see what I can do." Just as I am about to walk, I am pulled back and we realise that the Gusu Band is still binding us in union. Turning back to look at Wei, his grin says it all. "Lan Zhan," with a tug at my hand he unties the band and points towards my forehead, "Do you want me to tie it for you?"

My heart thumps.

Giving him a mock glare I retort, "Shameless" and walk out of the cave.

Once away from his inquisitive gaze, I smile.

Oh Wei Ying, why do you make my life so difficult?

"Are you sure?" Uncle questions me as he observes a piece of Yin Iron floating in thin air. Brother observes it with concern, "Elder Lan Yi had protected the Gusu boundaries for centuries and gave up her life to suppress the dark energy of the metal, and now with gone it's truly of concern " her. gone, it's truly of concern."

"We also realized that the recent happenings with the disciple's corpse are all related to the Yin Iron." I point out my observation and brother looks over, "We?"

"Wei Ying and I, we both were inside the cave."

"Wei Wuxian?" Uncle looks over irritatedly, "What was he doing in there?"

"Uncle-" I say but Brother intervenes, "That's of least importance. What we need to worry is how do we go about to seal the Yin Iron?"

"Let me handle this, please."

"Wangji?"

"Elder Lan Yi did state that when two Yin Irons are in close proximity they will react. With that I am confident enough to bring them all back to Gusu."

As Uncle and Brother look at eachother and contemplate, with a sigh they agree and smile, "Alright, but Wangji, you need to be safe." As Brother observes me standing quietly he knows

I am hesitating. "Wangji?"

"I need your permission Brother."

Both Uncle and Brother look at me perplexed. I have never asked them for anything, but this is not for me, it's for Wei Ying. "Elder Lan Yi's bunnies, who sport the Gusu Band, were trapped inside the cave and we have brought them out. Can I keep them in Jingshi? I promise they won't cause anyone any problem."

Brother's eyes twinkle and Uncle looks at me sternly, "Wangji, you know the rules. They have no place here."

My heart falls.

"Uncle, we can't abandon them, remember they are Elder Lan Yi's mystical creatures." Brother smiles and I look at him with a renewed hope.

"Alright, keep them. But I don't want to see them causing any sort of nuisance." He walks away and I inwardly sigh.

"Young Master Wei is truly spectacular." Brother teases and I tense. "He truly accomplishes difficult feats through you." Patting my back he continues, "Take good care of them.

Wangji. From now on they are yours."

That night as I walk into Jingshi, a young one bumps it's nose on my ankle. As it twitches it's whiskers I pick the small creature and we sit on the patio. Cool breeze plays with the chimes above and the bunny burrows itself into my cloak.

"Do you know you're one of the few whom I have freely permitted to enter Jingshi?" I caress it's white fur, "No one dares to come here. Rather no one wishes to enter this place. It had been abandoned for so long. If Wei had not got you all out of there, you would have been abandoned too." Looking into its eyes I state, "Maybe that's why he understands you, maybe only a person who was truly abandoned could understand the pain of being alone." The bunny licks my finger and I smile, "Can I share a secret with you? If he hadn't freed you all, I would have. I would have secretly brought you here. As I said, no one enters this place, this is a safe place. For souls like us, this is truly serendipity."
