"Do you want to see why this staff makes me different from others?" The old kobold asked Matthew.
Matthew looked closely to the staff that the old kobold held and thought, 'Well that wooden staff is surely not an ordinary staff with those weird-looking symbols carved into it, but what would it do? Will it enhance his aura or something?'
Despite having this thought, Matthew only nodded to the old kobold's question and waited to see for himself what the staff could do.
Matthew then saw the old kobold grabbing the staff with both of his hands, bringing it up in front of him before he opened his mouth and muttered,
"Through the fire authority that was given by the gods to the kobolds, hereby I command the fire elements to bend for my will and realize my desire!"
After Matthew heard the magnificent-sounding words come out of the old kobold's mouth, the symbols that were carved onto the wooden staff lit up with a red light.
The staff kept on glowing while the old kobold held the staff with his two hands before Matthew saw with his own eyes, red particles suddenly appeared out of thin air and they converged in front of the wooden staff before suddenly a fireball materialized in front of the wooden staff.
Matthew who was seeing this for the first time couldn't even process what was happening in front of him and just stared at the fireball for a while,
'What is that…?'
The fireball kept on floating in front of the staff as Matthew even started to feel the heat coming from the fireball.
'That is a real fire that emits heat! How did this…'
Then one thing that could explain the weird phenomenon in front of him pop up inside his head,
'HOLY BEARDED GOD! IS THAT… MAGIC!?'
'IS THAT REALLY MAGIC?'
Matthew brought up his hands closer to the floating fireball and he felt that the heat coming from the fireball was real and not from his imagination as his hands were getting hotter the closer they got to the fire.
'That is really magic…How can I use it? Is it different from how I use aura? Sys… Wait, I don't want to look weird talking to myself while I ask the system about magic. And I could even ask the magic-user myself in front of me, the system couldn't always provide the answer I wanted if it didn't have the information I wanted.'
And with that, Matthew turned to the old kobold and asked,
"Mutt is that really magic??"
Before replying to Matthew, the old kobold closed his eyes and focused on his staff as Matthew saw that the fireball is starting to disappear as red particles from the fireball can be seen scattered back to the surroundings before completely disappearing from the naked eyes once again.
After the fireball is completely snuffed out, the old kobold then opened up his eyes once again then answered Matthew,
"Yes! What you've seen is magic. And if you could've guessed yourselves already, my current race is a kobold mage!" The old kobold said proudly as his old body was straightened up and a wide proud smile appeared on his face.
"If you noticed, how my body evolved was slightly different from the other kobolds that evolved into kobold warriors."
Matthew was about to ask what is the difference as he could only see the body of an old creature that is certainly, of course, 100% was quite different then the strong and tough-looking kobold warriors, but after remembering that a wooden staff may hit his head if he voiced his opinion, Matthew decided to just silently gave the old kobold a nod of agreement and only ask,
"What is the difference? I can't spot them yet as I didn't really know the warrior kobold physics that well."
The old kobold accepted Matthew's reasoning as he explained patiently,
"When the kobold warriors evolved, their bodies will gain more strength in terms of more muscles and power and their claws also became tougher as they will be able to easily match the weapons we made from using the bones from the creatures of the forest."
"While me, a kobold mage, when I evolve, a lot of my strength went here." The old kobold said as he pointed to his head that looked like a wolf's head that was covered in slightly fading brown fur.
"After I evolved and my race changed from an ordinary kobold into a kobold mage, I could understand things easier and thus helped me comprehend and learn magic easier."
"Even though my body was not as strong as the kobold warriors, my fighting power is not less and even in certain cases, more powerful than them!"
Matthew gave a round of applause after the old kobold finished his story about the kobold mage as he looked at the old kobold that had suddenly, somehow looked way cooler than before in Matthew's eyes.
"You're Awesome Mutt!"
But not only Matthew was genuinely interested in the old kobold's explanation of the kobold mage, Matthew also wondered about something,
"Umm...Mutt… Can you teach me how to use magic please!"
Hearing Matthew enthusiastic answer and the sudden request of teaching him magic, the old kobold released a laugh as he patted Matthew's shoulder and said,
"I can try Matthew, but it is not that easy as I even practiced for about a year to be able to say the chants properly. 1 year and it's only memorizing the chants! My grandfather said that it was the ancient kobold language and it is the prerequisite to be able to use the kobold's magic."
'Ancient kobold language? But I didn't hear any difference from…'
Matthew was able to clearly hear what the old kobold was muttering when he held the staff in front of his body. And when the old kobold said that what he was saying is something in ancient kobold language, Matthew was quite confused at first, but then he remembered that he got a cheat-like help from god when he arrived at this world.
'Ah… I remember now.'
'It's the translation function from the system doing its job…'
The translation function that was available in the system was supposed to help Matthew to be able to adapt and live in this new world easier just in case he needed to converse with the natives of the world as his skill in the English language means nothing in this world because nobody, not even one soul understands them.
But now that simple function actually gave him the ability to be able to understand ancient language that is used for wielding magic just from hearing the language once. Does this mean to happen? Or was this an accident?
Matthew didn't know and he didn't even think about that, what was inside his mind is only one thing and that is,
'Does this mean I will be able to use magic?'
'System, can you make me speak the ancient kobold language?'
'Yes.'
'Okay, let's try it, please change the words that I'm speaking to the ancient kobold language when I told you to do it.'
"Umm… Mutt, Can I borrow your staff for a second to see if I could also use magic?" Matthew asked the old kobold.
"As long as you're able to speak the chants properly and use this staff with the inscriptions on them, any kobold can use the kobold's magic."
"But you need to properly chant the words because even a slight mistake won't activate the inscriptions."
"I think I'm able to do that."
The old kobold then perked up his ears and arched his eyebrows as he saw Matthew was really confident when he said that he was able to do it.
"Really? Here, give it a try!" The old kobold said to Matthew as he tossed the wooden staff as if it was just an ordinary wooden stick to Matthew.
Matthew easily caught the wooden staff that was thrown at him using his right hand before he held the wooden staff in front of him using both of his hands, imitating what the old kobold had done before when he used magic.
The old kobold watched Matthew with great interest as he wanted to see whether the unique-looking kobold in front of him could really say the chants that he spent one year learning properly from only hearing it once.
Matthew closed his eyes as he calmed his mind and body and repeated the chants that he had to say to activate the symbols carved onto the wooden staff.
'System, you can activate the function now.'
Matthew then took a deep breath until his chest was heaved up slightly before he said the words clearly,
"Through the fire authority that was given by the gods to the kobolds, hereby I command the fire elements to bend for my will and realize my desire!"
Hearing Matthew's perfect chant, the old kobold's eyes went wide with shock and even his mouth was opened slightly as he didn't expect that the young kobold in front of him was able to do it from just hearing it once. The old kobold then peeled his eyes as he waited for the inscriptions on the wooden staff to light up as he was about to explain the next step that Matthew has to do to make a fireball once the first initial step of using was almost completed successfully in his first try!
