The old kobold then peeled his eyes as he waited for the inscriptions on the wooden staff to light up as he was about to explain the next step that Matthew has to do to make a fireball once the first initial step of using was almost completed successfully in his first try!
Well, almost.
Matthew already opened his eyes as he finished his chant to activate the symbols on the wooden staff.
Both Matthew and the old kobold looked at the staff and waited patiently to see the inscriptions light up, even the three kobold kids also stared at the wooden staff with great interest as they were curious if someone is able to use magic besides their village chief.
But as seconds passed and almost a minute went by and the symbols on the wooden staff still didn't light up even slightly.
'Why? Did I do anything wrong?' A confused look appeared on Matthew's face as he looked at the old kobold, gave the system a command to return the language he is speaking into the kobold's and asked,
"Mutt, Did I do any steps wrong?"
The old kobold shook his head as he replied to Matthew as his face is also one that is full of confusion. He then said,
"I don't know how you manage to do it, but you really did succeed in chanting the words with perfection and without any misspelling or awkward-sounding words."
"But I also don't know why you failed at the first step to light up the inscriptions on the staff. The first step to light up the staff only needed you to say the chants in ancient language properly, the gesture of me holding the staff with two hands or other things didn't have any direct effect on the succession of lighting up the staff, so you should have succeeded." The old kobold then rubbed his temples as he was thinking for a reason why Matthew failed despite his perfect chanting. But the old kobold couldn't come up with anything as he released a sigh and said,
"I really don't have a slight idea, any kobolds should have been able to do it. Even one with no talent in magic at all could at least light up the staff after saying the chant. Unless you are actually not a kobold hence why you couldn't use the authority that was given to the kobold ancestor by the gods."
"Other than that, I couldn't really think of anything else."
Hearing the old kobold's reasoning was actually 100% spot-on because Matthew didn't even have a sliver of kobold DNA in him since his head and claws were stolen from the wolf and his limbs from the monkeys and even his race are now labeled as 'Chameleon Chimera' not a 'Kobold Chimera'.
Matthew started to panic inside as he was afraid that his cover would be blown out and he didn't know what the kobolds would do to him if they thought that Matthew was another creature that is disguising himself as one of them.
As Matthew was about to give out explanations and excuses, the old kobold opened his mouth first and said,
"But that is impossible! Even if you are a different species that is similar to a kobold, you speak the kobold's language fluently! So there must be something that I am missing since I don't know everything about magic because I only know the bits and pieces that my grandfather had taught me."
Matthew then almost heaved a sigh of relief as he heard the old kobold is saving him out of his predicament, but he succeeded in holding his sigh in as if he really sighed then the old kobold might think that his earlier guess was true.
But as Matthew heard the old kobold's monologue about the magic that piqued his interest.
"Mutt, what is the authority that you mentioned earlier?"
Matthew had actually made some guesses about what that authority means as he could understand the chants that were used to light up the wooden magic staff is pretty self-explanatory when it even said 'Through the fire authority that was given by the gods to the kobolds,' Matthew could make some guesses what that authority means, but just to be sure, he asked the old kobold the question.
Hearing Matthew's question, the old kobold think of something for a second before saying,
"The story behind it is not that short, are you sure you want to hear it now? Didn't the kids say that you had just defeated the powerful beast, aren't you tired, Matthew?"
"I can still manage as I am really curious about magic, I want to hear it! Moreover, It is still in the afternoon, I still have plenty of time to sleep and rest before tomorrow comes!"
"Alright then, we better take a seat as the story won't finish until your legs start to feel slightly sore."
The old kobold then grabbed his chair and brought them into the middle of the room as he just gestured for the rest including Matthew to just sit on the floor as he re-tell the story that his grandfather had told him when he was younger.
"You three kids, come here and listen as well." The old kobold said to his grandson and the kobold twins. But it seems to be unnecessary to say this to his own grandson as he already takes a seat next to Matthew on the ground, perking his ears up to hear the story even before the old kobold told him to come and sit down.
The kobold twins that was still standing next to the cloth door as their preparation to run away if the old kobold ever get angry, silently walked over to the center of the room and took their seat, as well as the second kobold, sit next to the first kobold while the third kobold sit next to Matthew.
Seeing that his audience is now ready, the old kobold coughed lightly a few times to clear his throat and began narrating the story that he knew ever since he was a level 10 kobold.
"A long time ago when the gods decided to make this world, they filled it with all kinds of scenery. From this forest that spread far and wide that it took months to get from one side to the other, mountains that stood tall as far as the eyes can see, and many other places that have their own unique traits."
"But there's not all that the gods made when they created this world, despite the amazing nature and wondrous sceneries all over the world, the world was still empty with nothing but earth, wind, fire, water, and all the other elements that existed in harmony in the world."
"To fill this emptiness, the gods decided to fill it with life! The gods started to fill the world with animals, from the ordinary ones that were peaceful in nature and ate the grass, the trees, and the other plants, they also created animals that feed on these peaceful animals."
"The varying animals, herbivore, carnivore, even omnivorous, spread throughout the lands and give the world a liveliness that was absent before. The gods looked at this and smiled with content."
"But as time passes the animals aren't developing towards the direction that the gods wanted as they only cared mostly about surviving and the few of them that have actually gained some type of reasoning other than pure survival, only cared for strength and thus the world didn't progress at all aside from creating animals that were stronger after each generation."
"The gods created the world not to see carnage and battles of strength as they wanted to see the world develop and improve from all kinds of aspects."
"Then the gods had an idea. If they wanted the world to grow into the direction that they wanted, then why don't they make a creature that is based on themselves."
"With the ability to understand and learn things as curiosity drives them forward to further develop themselves with the knowledge that they found and the gods will even give them the ability to create as they used all the basic knowledge that they had learned to create other things to help themselves solve problems that they encountered."
"Thus the gods began creating humans and demihumans. They created all kinds of humanoid beings such as kobolds, goblins, ogres, elves, and the humans themselves with their own unique traits that differed them from each other and they started to populate the world."
"The gods observed how the humans and demihumans lived in the world and some races even took the gods' interest as they were given authority."
"The authorities given to them enabled them to manipulate the elements that existed in the world and it even stayed with them even though their descendants that currently lived in this world. Hence that is the origin of magic users in the world."
"And the kobold race is one of the many that received these blessings as we are given with the authority to manipulate the fire elements that exist in this world."
