Chapter 47 - Pointing Fingers

The group of monkeys comes in different colors of fur. From white, brown, and black fur can be seen colored their bodies from the top of their heads until the tip of their tails. The same as the last time Matthew met them, they are currently doing different kinds of activities, some were jumping around, some were eating, and some looked like they're just chilling with their friends over a fruit.

Matthew didn't know how good their eyesight was and if they had any other methods to detect him, but he thought that it's better to be safe than sorry, and wasting a small amount of aura to ensure the success of his ambush is totally worth it.

Regarding Matthew's chameleon aura ability, he himself still didn't know the details about how it works. So far he only knew that he would be invisible when using the ability, and his invisibility also enabled him to be undetectable from the snake's sensor. But Matthew also knew that even though he turned completely invisible, he still made a sound wherever his feet stepped on dry leaves or if he accidentally broke a twig by stepping over it, the snapping sound caused by it won't just magically disappear.

Matthew thought that he still had a lot to learn and understand about his chameleon aura ability so that he could prepare himself better if he ever fought an opponent that is somehow able to see through his invisibility.

But going into this fight with the monkeys, Matthew wasn't on full guard since he is already 15 meters away from them and they haven't noticed Matthew is walking closer and closer straight in their direction.

Matthew still avoided randomly stepping onto things that may have caused a sound and thus alerted the monkeys.

It didn't take long for Matthew to arrive in the middle of the monkey group and he started to search for the biggest monkey there. He didn't know if monkeys had a hierarchical structure or leader of some sort, but considering they lived in groups, there's a high chance that at least a leader figure exists. If not, the mischievous monkeys may do whatever they want and get themselves into trouble.

And going by the rule of the jungle, the strongest should be the leader. Even though body size didn't necessarily translate to strength, Matthew didn't have any other way to measure their strength. Since Matthew will depend on his stealth to attack, he could only guess which is the strongest that he has to deal with first because getting rid of the strongest could ease his burden greatly, especially if that figure is the one that gave out commands to the others.

The monkeys' bodies weren't too big and they are about the same size as Matthew's current body, so it's quite hard for Matthew to find the leader of monkeys by only judging by their body size.

Matthew then used his human logic to observe the monkeys' behaviors closely and see if he could gain anything by doing that. And not long after he witnessed the monkeys' behaviors, he could clearly identify that there is one black monkey who is leisurely relaxing on its back on top of a tree and other monkeys bringing food for it to eat.

'Yep, that's definitely the one I'm looking for.'

Matthew then proceeded to slowly approach the tree that the alpha monkey was laying on, and Matthew started climbing behind the tree. His steps are slow and steady, with his long claws and two-toed feet, his grip is solid and steady, and his feet made no creaking noise as he steadily crept upward.

It only took him tens of seconds to climb up the 15-meter tall tree and he is now directly behind the branch that the alpha monkey was laying its body on.

'Should I use my biting strength to kill it or should I depend on my venom?' Matthew thought to himself.

But he didn't take too long to decide, and he decided that he wouldn't pour out his venom into only 1 monkey. Since Matthew's goal was to level up from killing all tens of monkeys in the group, he should coat his claws with the venom so that all the monkeys in the group will equally get a taste of his venom.

'But before that, let's see if I am strong enough to deal with them without my venom.'

Matthew then waited patiently to strike at the perfect moment. And fortunately, it didn't take long as the alpha monkey was enjoying his fruit that looked like a red ripe apple, and the other monkey was already away from his side, Matthew walked up from behind the tree and stayed right beside the alpha monkey.

As the alpha monkey was opening its mouth and about to bite off a piece of the apple, Matthew swiftly opened up his mouth and snapped at the monkey's neck, just like how the crocodile ambushed the deers back then.

With the monkey's body and Matthew's body similar in size and proportion, Matthew's wolf's mouth is as big as the monkey's neck when he opens up his wolf mouth wide. The monkey's neck seems to fit like a glove inside Matthew's mouth, but not for long as Matthew started biting down as hard as he could and strangled the monkey.

Not only was Matthew's sharp teeth bore inside the monkey's neck causing blood to spill out, but his whole mouth was also pressuring the neck and pinching the airway, preventing the monkey from breathing at all.

The alpha monkey was stricken with fear, as he suddenly lost his ability to breathe. He could feel his neck was being pressed so hard that it seemed as if his spine was about to break.

Caught off-guard and by surprise, the alpha monkey who was stronger than the rest of the monkey, forgot to fight back and could only retaliate by swinging its limbs and tried to break free by moving frantically.

But Matthew didn't reduce the strength he used to bite the monkey's neck. On the contrary, he put more strength into it as the monkey was struggling fiercely and Matthew was afraid that the monkey would accidentally slip out of his bite.

Finally, the monkey who was struggling for his dear life gave up and his body soon went limp.

-Level 14 Macaque Monkey Killed-

'Yes! It's level 14! If the leader is level 14, then the rest should be around level 13 and 12...I could surely level up if I clear up this group!'

Matthew was lost in his mind thinking about how near he is to a level up and his third evolution, that he didn't realize that in the 30 seconds that he used to kill the black monkey, the rest of the monkeys in the group had stopped whatever they are doing, and they are currently looking at their lifeless leader's body still laying on top a tree branch.

But the silence didn't stay long as suddenly, a loud screech was let out by one of the monkeys and the rest of the group started to jump in place and let out a loud sound of their own. The current situation that was unfolding in front of Matthew's eyes could only be described as chaos.

Matthew then looked at his surroundings, and he could see that some of the monkeys were currently fighting each other.

'What are they doing? Why are they suddenly attacking each other?'

Matthew observed closely and he realized that there are only 5 monkeys who are fighting each other while the rest are only watching them and it seemed as if they were waiting for the result of the fight.

'Wait… Are they searching for another leader? Just when their former leader was killed, the first thing that they do is fight each other for that position?'

'It seems that I overestimated them! So much for being an infamous mischievous creature that was said to be as smart as humans.'

But of course, Matthew didn't just stay still and enjoyed the show like the other monkeys. In the unfolding chaos, Matthew silently slipped away and targeted monkeys that were slightly separated from the group and he started biting their necks one by one.

Matthew succeeded in taking down 6 level 12 to level 13 monkeys so far, and the fight for finding the next monkey leader is still going strong with only 1 monkey taken out of the picture and 4 monkeys are still hitting each other in the face.

Matthew is still planning to take advantage of the situation and he thought that his plan will go on smoothly until there are only ten or so monkeys left. But he didn't expect that when he was about to take out the ninth monkey, the monkey moved his position slightly, and caused Matthew to miss his bite and he only succeeded in biting half of the monkey's neck causing the monkey's airway not properly pinched.

The monkey was startled as he suddenly felt an attack on his neck, and his instinct is telling him to shout as loud as he could, so he did.

The monkeys communicate using their voices and their body language. And of course, they have a language for alerting the whole group of danger. And the monkey who had half of his neck bitten, of course, released the scream that alerted the whole group of an attack.

The monkey's scream was so loud that the whole chaos started to die down, and the 4 monkeys who were fighting in the middle of the crowd stopped their fighting.

Then the whole group of monkeys looked at the source of the scream and they saw one of their kin was attacked by something and it is currently struggling for its life.

Matthew of course also noticed that all the groups' attention were on him, but he still didn't let go of his bite and continued his attack because,

'They can't see me right, what can they do?'

But then Matthew realized that the monkey that was stuck in his mouth was currently swaying its hand frantically, and it looked as if it was pointing its fingers directly to Matthew's face. As if it was telling the other monkey that the attacker is there.

'Ah yes, surely these monkeys are smart enough to point with their fingers….'

'How did I forget about that…'
