Chapter 34 - A Middle Ground

While the old man was looking at Rein with his eyes brimming with praise, she was currently trying to soak in the massive amounts of information he had unloaded on her tiny brain.

Alongside the explanation given by the wise physician, she was also unraveling various memories which taught her more about Rein's life.

As Doctor Bundt had said, Rein truly never drank an ounce of blood in her entire life.

Reina had just caught sight of a scene that flashed across her eyes, depicting Rein's attempt to consume blood.

However, the poor Rein had not been able to do so and spat out the tiny sip she had taken.

Being a vampire, she could not stomach the very idea of drinking blood for some unknown reason.

Numerous times, Rein had tried but it was all for naught as she never could let the viscous liquid flow down her throat.

It either ended up being thrown up onto the floor or back into the goblet and would later be flushed down the toilet.

Therefore, Reina, who had been a human all her life, found that she could empathize with her predecessor on this matter.

Now that she had become a vampire, Reina had thought of consuming blood last night but just the thought of it could make her stomach churn.

Thankfully, her predecessor seemed to dislike blood just like her which now allowed her to stay away from it as well.

From the memories she obtained just earlier, Reina understood how her predecessor had survived until now.

The only way Rein could stick around for so many years without drinking an ounce of blood was thanks to one object.

Blood alternates.

The blood alternates that the old physician had mentioned was how Rein had curbed her thirst for blood without actually consuming any.

The blood alternates that Rein used were the pills that Doctor Bundt had inquired about earlier.

Rein had run out of the stock of blood pills which the old man had deduced was the cause of the unexplained urge to consume that she had last night.

Through the physician's explanation and her triggered memories, Reina now knew that Rein consumed those blood pills every day to keep those urges at bay.

She used blood alternates as no matter how much her body thirsted for blood, her stomach refused to let any in.

Her body desired blood but her mind rejected it, making things difficult for Rein who was torn between the two.

To remedy this inconsistent mentality, Rein had opted for a middle ground.

Blood pills were made to emulate the nourishment one gained after consuming blood.

Drinking either the blood of humans or animals had its pros and cons.

These pills were synthetically made to imitate the nutrients produced in a vampire's body after drinking blood without the cons of either.

Making sure that they had no harsh side effects or reactions made it possible for the blood pills to be sold everywhere.

However, blood pills also had their limitations.

While they tried to control the number of drawbacks caused by drinking blood, they could not enhance its main purpose.

The blood pills' ability to provide life essence after consumption was still low.

This was the reason why, even when blood pills were the safer choice, vampires would rather opt for a fresh source of blood due to its potential to give higher life essence after consumption.

Still, a few people used blood pills despite the low life essence derived from them.

The only times they looked for blood picks were during the periods when it was inconvenient for them to find a blood source.

Once they found another human or animal to sink their fangs into, they would toss the pills out of their memory until they were required once again.

However, Rein's situation was vastly varying from theirs.

She used these pills on a daily basis to substitute them for the missing blood consumption that was a mandate in her diet.

This had led to her blood remaining pure all along, as without consuming blood from an external source, there was no reason for her blood to get diluted.

Finally, being able to decipher the mystery about Rein's purity, Reina found herself to be silent as she decided on what needed to be done next.

"What experiment?" She questioned after a while, coming straight to the point.

Doctor Bundt was speechless for a second at the sharp look in the youngster's eyes then realized that he had been asked a question.

"I developed a new kind of pill and I need your help to analyze its ability to provide life essence upon consumption." He did not dilly dally nor was he beating around the bush with his request.

The sole reason why he had asked for Rein's aid was his blood's purity.

Since Rein survived solely on blood pills, it would be easier to gauge the effects of a new kind of pill instead of using any other vampire who might be consuming blood from different sources.

If another vampire was used then it would be difficult for Doctor Bundt to make out how much his pills were contributing to the combined life essence being produced in his test subject's body.

As the intake of blood would interfere with the physician's experiment, he would not be able to detect the exact amount of life essence his new pill could provide.

Thus, Rein was the perfect specimen to test his experimental drug on.

"I have tested the pill myself and can assure you that it has not shown any ill effects." He added in order to convince the chamberlain to agree to his request.

After all, even he consumed blood on a daily basis and hence wasn't deemed fit to test it out to the extent that he would prefer.

With the emergence of Rein Melk, he had found his perfect test subject and was willing to do anything to be able to get Rein onboard.

It would be a privilege to analyze how his pill functioned after being consumed by a vampire with the highest purity he had seen to this date.

Reina mulled over the pros and cons of the offer being made by the old man.

On one hand, she was still cautious about getting too close to him as she needed to be wary of everyone around her.

On the other hand, she was freshly out of blood pills which she now knew was a necessity for this body to function well.

Rein's body was already weakened due to her inability to drink blood and now, denying it even the blood alternate could lead to disastrous outcomes which Reina wasn't willing to face.

Therefore, she narrowed her eyes and leered at the old physician who had been accompanying her for more than three whole hours now.

"If I am going to do this then-" Reina had only begun stating her conditions when she saw the old man leap out of his seat.

By deducing the trajectory of his movements, she was able to figure out that he was lunging right at her to give her a hug due to his excitement.

However, Reina could never let this man get too close to her.

'One hug and he will know that I am not a man!' She screamed in panic within her mind.
