Chapter 26 - 26. Born to be Cursed

Seeing the confusion growing over Nick's face, Antonio continued, "That alone wasn't enough to know who you were though. What gave it away was you talking about Jin and how you will stop at nothing to protect her. I've long know of how Abby and Mikey failed to bring her back. Connor has already dealt their punishments for that. What caught me off guard, is you saying she is carrying your child. That should be impossible unless..."

Entrapped by the last bit and how Antonio trailed of his statement, Nick drew closer to him. Towering above the man on his knee, Nick couldn't help himself. "Unless what? Even I know of the impossibility. Yet, reality cannot be changed. You said you knew what I am. How am I any different than a normal beast?" Nick stared as the expression on Antonio's face turned to bafflement.

"What makes you different means everything. It is why you are able to have a child. It is why you were able to overpower me so easily despite my being several hundreds of years older than you. You ARE a pure bread wolf. Your very existence is a threat to reality. You could change everything if you wanted to. Don't even get me started on your unborn child. He or she will be unstoppable should they ever awaken the curse entangled within your genes." Antonio was unsure as to how Nick was oblivious to what he was. Still, a sense of honor encircled him knowing that he was the one to explain this to him. Simply being in his presence was an honor unknown to nearly all of the wolves on the planet. It was believed pure breeds died off years before the day of the village assault.

Processing what he'd just heard, Nick became all the more confused. Yesterday, he was thinking he'd likely die protecting the woman he loved and his unborn child. Today he is being told he has the power to change the entire world simply by existing. Thinking back, Nick still hadn't a clue as to whom his parents were. Still, that wouldn't surmount to proof of what he's being told. One fact caught in his mind. A fact that was undeniable as proof that he wasn't born this way. "If this is all true, then tell me how it's possible I never changed before that day. If what you're saying is the truth then why didn't I transform even once in the first nineteen years of my life?"

Nick's question held a point that would otherwise hold validity. However, Antonio was well versed in the history of their species. With a smile he answered, "until you killed Varon, your cursed genes remained dormant. Only through taking a life will a pure breed awaken to his true self. Many wolves believe that pure breeds never died off, they simply stopped activating their genes and therefore would die off within a century. They would otherwise go completely unnoticed. Sure, they would have larger physiques and be slightly faster than your average man. That wouldn't be enough to arise suspicion though."
