Chapter 15 - 15. Normalish

With no care as to what lay on the otherwise, Nick opened the bathroom door. What he saw made him believe he'd just walked through Heaven's Gates. Aside from the aged scares from all those years ago and a few purple blemishes from the day before, Jin's skin was as a flawless canvas. A milky white, awaiting the artist's muse.

Leaning on the frame, he savored the view of this petite beauty attempting to hide herself from his eyes. A hint of blush bloomed on her face the more intently he stared. A smile beamed across his face wondering how he'd not noticed this before.

"Breakfast is ready. If you need to, my clothes are in the dresser. We can always go buy you more later." He began to return to the bedroom before he was stopped by her question. "So this isn't a dream, right?" Her longing glare made him take a step back before answering, "is this what you normally dream of?"

Again he turned to the bedroom but not before seeing the steam spew from her ears. With one question he popped the cork, exposing every thought she'd had about him up to now. She contemplated locking herself away in there until the end of days from the embarrassment. Instead, she opted to take one of his shirts and her shorts before heading to the kitchen table.

Seeing the meal laid out before her, her eyes glistened. Having struggling to get by for decades, this was a feast. Saying nothing, she readily sat and began shoveling food into her mouth. After the first bits, she stopped and tried to hide herself from he prying eyes that sat across from her. "Thank you" is all she could muster before turning back to the meal.

Seeing her like this, Nick was filled with joy and wonder. For once, he felt as if his life were normal. The thought of even settling down here crossed his mind. To him, it didn't matter where they were, if she was there beside him, anything would be enough.

After the food was finished, the two moved to the sink and washed the little dishes they'd used. Jin washed while Nick rinsed and dried. It mimicked a scene from a classical movie he'd gone to see when it had first aired in a cinema. Back then, there was no audio, only words on a screne and the occasional sound of the projector hidden high behind the audience.

Once the last cup was away in the cupboards, Nick restated himself, "do you want to go shopping for some more clothes? There isn't much in this little town but something is better than nothing after all." Seeing how she had shown up with just the slightly tattered clothes on her back, he was worried she had nothing else.

Nodding in agreement, the two exited the apartment and began strolling along Main Street. Seeing how she was constant looking around, Nick took her hand. All worries left her face and a glowing completion replaced it. After about fifteen minutes they'd arrived at the only store that sold clothes for the next twenty miles.

The selection wasn't huge but it was enough for the simple lives of the locals. No store here ever became crowded as not many folks needed to shop more than once a week. Even still, luck wasn't on his side today.

Looking past the register, Nick saw the only person in the area he'd hoped to never meet again, Jess. Her and her two snobbish friends were looking through a rack of clearance shorts that wouldn't cover much of either of them. Before he could slip out of sight, she called out to him. "Thoughg you'd already skipped town after yesterday. What happened, come back to finish what we started?" Obliviously ignoring Jin, she began to close the distance to him.

With her inches away from him and staring up into his eyes Nick steeled his emotions. "Nothing has or ever will happen between us. Now if you'll move aside, we're here to shop." Nick instinctually pulled Jin closer to him so their arms touched. Letting go of his hand, she then entwined their arms in an attempt to intimidate the girl standing before them.

"Who's this? Never seen you in town before. Don't tell me you came all the way out here just to find his sorry ass. Honey, he wasted no time after getting here before he started eying me from the barn." Jess began to let the lies roll off her tongue. Thinking she could scare of this frail looking woman before her, she zeroed in on Nick again. Closing the distance between him and herself, she pressed her poor excuse of a chest against him, never breaking eye contact with Jin.
