Chapter 61 - Ysabella

Alex's POV

I was driving the car going to the hospital and I knew Piper is in severe pain. I keep glancing at them in the rear view mirror. Arizona is with her in the back and trying to soothe her. She already called the hospital and Piper's OB. They both work at the same hospital which is a great relief.

"You're doing great Piper. Just take a deep breath".

"Oh my God! It hurts!". Piper started to scream.

"I know, I know. We're almost there".

The hospital is not that far from our new house and when we got there we have a room right away and Piper was hooked up to all the machines. We are able to hear our baby's constant heartbeat and it feels very comforting hearing the little wave of sound.

Piper was already in active labor and she was 6 cm dilated when we arrived. She was being monitored by the nurse to check how she's handling the contractions.

Piper's pain started to worsen as the hours progress. She then started vomiting and I was holding a bucket for her. Now I feel bad for giving her so much food earlier.

Another hour flew by and Piper wasn't able to walk or to talk. She just curled up in a ball and was groaning and crying. I really feel bad for her but I couldn't do anything so I stayed beside her and comfort her. I keep stroking her hair and reassure her that I'm here for her.

This is one crazy night. Her doctor, however, had left to see other patients. The only people in the room with me is Arizona and the delivery nurse. We wanted Arizona to be our doctor from the beginning but she politely refused. She said she doesn't want to mix her social and professional life. She explained that Doctors must keep their relationship with patients professional, or they might risk making mistakes which cloud their judgment and affect their objectivity and clinical decision making. We understand and respect that, but right now with all the craziness going on here, I'm just grateful for her presence.

Piper doesn't want any medication and want to do this naturally. I think she's very brave for doing this.

"Alex, can you help me get up?". Piper moaned.

"Why? What do you need?".

"I want to go to the toilet, I think I'm going to poop".

"Seriously? Right now?". I was amused but still helped her get up.

I noticed Arizona's head snapped up and she got up from the couch and walk towards us.

"Alex, put her back". Arizona said sternly.

"She needs to go to the bathroom". I informed her.

Arizona was quick and she insisted to put Piper back on the bed and she will check on her.

She gasped loudly. "Okay Piper, I want you to relax and push hard on your next contractions. You're baby's coming out".

"What?". Piper blurted. A full panic in her voice.

"Oh my God! Piper, you can do it". I said in encouragement.

Arizona then started to scrub in. She put on some surgical gloves and was giving instructions to the nurse.

On her next contraction Piper was gripping the side railing of the bed so hard that her knuckles were white and she started pushing.

"Very good, keep pushing, Piper". Arizona said.

"I can't do it... Alex, I can't". She started sobbing. I feel really bad seeing my wife like this.

"Piper, our baby is coming out now. You can do this".

"But it hurts". She cried again.

She breath deeply and started pushing again after another wave of contractions.

"Oh God, Oh God, Oh God! It hurts!!". Piper screamed.

"Good job, Piper! I can see her head now. You're almost there".

"I have to see this". I blurted. This is a one time experience for me seeing my daughter being born. I have got to see this.

I was going to check it out when Piper grab hold of my arm forcefully and pull me back.

"No! No way you are seeing that!". She yelled at me.

"Why?". I asked confused

"Whatever is happening down there is not pretty. I don't want you to see that".

"You are being ridiculous, babe. I've seen what's down there many times and it's pretty". I exclaimed.

"I know! But right now whatever is between my legs is not pretty it's her evil twin. Trust me you don't want to see that and you'll thank me later".

"Piper, her head is halfway out. Just one big push... Come on... Push, push, push. Keep going".

After a few push and a lot of swearing from Piper our daughter is finally out.

"Here she is!". Arizona said excitedly and she passed her to the nurse who began to clean her up. She was suctioning out her mouth and nose but she wasn't crying. She wrap her up in a blanket and place her on Piper's chest.

Our daughter is so beautiful. She has a head full of black hair just like mine and a set of deep green eyes are open like she's ready to take a peek at the world around her. She didn't cry at first and then she sneezed.

Me and Piper started laughing and we probably startle her because then she started to cry.

A good healthy cry and my heart just melted.

"Oh, we're very sorry. Did we startle you?". Piper said gently.

Our daughter is absolutely beautiful. I know most parents think that their babies are beautiful, but there was no denying that our daughter is perfect.

I didn't notice Arizona and the nurse around us. All I can focus on right now is my wife and my daughter.

Piper is a natural, she put the baby on her breast and Bella immediately stopped crying, she latched right on and has continued to breastfeed like a champion and in a few minutes she was sleeping soundly.

I snapped pictures of our baby and sent it to our friends back home and Piper's family. Everybody was thrilled and they cannot wait to meet her.

"Do you want to hold her?". Piper asked.

"Yeah, but I don't know how to hold her". I was suddenly became anxious.

Piper chuckled. "Come here".

She placed the baby carefully in my arms. I cannot believe how warm and tiny she is. She is so little and I was suddenly afraid I might break her. I cannot believe a whole human can literally fit in my arms.

"Watch her head". Arizona caution.

I can't stop myself from starring at my daughter.

"Hi, Bella". I whispered and lean down to kiss her tiny forehead. She smiled and her eyes flutter.

"She smiled at me". I told Piper.

"She looks just like you, babe. She's got your eyes and your hair".

I hold Bella for I don't know how long and I don't want to ever let her go. She was safely tucked in my arms and she's sleeping soundly. Piper needed rest so I let her sleep. Arizona also left to do some paper works.

I have never experienced the kind of love I felt for my daughter, it is a type of love I never realized existed before.

It is terrifying because the world can be a dangerous place and the idea of someone trying to harm my baby is making me uneasy.

There was a soft knock on the door and Arizona came in. She was smiling widely at me.

"I just finish doing the paper work and your doctor is going to check on them later. She also wanted to apologize". Honestly, I was secretly glad that Arizona was the one to deliver our baby.

She walk closer to us and peek at my daughter.

"Oh my goodness! She is so cute". She whispered as she looked at my daughter. "She look exactly just like you... Congratulations Alex, I'm so happy for you guys".

"Thank you for helping us today". I murmured.

Piper's POV

I woke up from my nap and I found Alex sitting on the chair sleeping and holding our daughter. I want to keep this moment so I reach over for my phone and snap a photo of them.

I had learned so much from this experience. It brought me and Alex to a whole new level and I saw a side of her that I didn't see before. Alex is a wonderful mother.

"Alex... Al". I tried calling her without waking up the baby. Her eyes snap open.

"Hey". I whispered

"Yes, you need something?". Alex asked.

I shook my head.

"You should rest, I'll watch her". I offered and she hands me our baby. It's been more than two hours so I have to feed her.

"I don't think I could go back to sleep. Maybe I'll go get coffee. You want something?".

"Yeah, I'm starving. I'll eat whatever you can get".

"Alright, I'll be right back. If you need me just holler".

"Okay, I'll send smoke signals". That made Alex laugh.

It's still early in the morning and the sun has not risen yet.

After a while Ysabella stirred in my arms and started crying. I rock her and try to put her back to sleep but she continue to cry, I offer her my breast again but she won't take it. This baby did not come with an instruction manual. So I don't know what else to do. Did I do something wrong? Maybe I squeezed her too hard or she's feeling cold, maybe she's in pain. I started to panic.

Just then Alex enter the room holding a few paper bags.

"What's wrong with her?". She asked.

"I don't know, I just fed her but she won't stop crying". I said panic in my tone.

Alex place the food on the table and walk over to us. She noticed that I was anxious.

"Piper relax, just cool down. Did you check her diaper?".

"Umm... No I haven't".

I suddenly feel so dumb. Why I haven't thought of that.

"Alright, let's see here". Alex checked under the baby.

"Bingo! There's a gold mine under there". She took the baby carefully and place her on the basinet and she expertly changed her diaper. Just like magic she immediately stopped crying.

Then Alex pick her up and cradle her in her arms.

"You little rascal, you gave mommy a scare". Alex cooed and hands me back the baby.

She's sleeping soundly again as if nothing happened.

I checked her little wrist band and I noticed something interesting.

"Ah... Babe?".

"Hmmmmm?". Alex hummed, she was now busy taking the food out of the bag.

"Are you aware that you both share the same birthday?".

"What?". Alex was very surprised. "No way!". She walk back to check that I was not kidding.

Our daughter was born at

11:57 pm of May 16th.

"What the...". Alex blurted.
