Chapter 18 - The Memory

A/N: Hey everyone! I know I have been gone for a while, but I had the worst writers block for a while, and I lost my computer the last time I updated. So I have had this written up for a while and wanted to give you something to read while I work on the next chapters. So here is a little insight to our Dark Lord; Khanum.

_______________________________________________

Khanum sat on his dark throne in deep thought. His brows furrowed on his head as he tapped his fingers on the arms of his throne.

'4 out of the 5 five hearts have been found.' He thought angrily

Kahnum was running out of time, and patience with his minions and himself. Taking a deep breath Kahnum let his mind drift into his memories.

It seemed a lifetime ago to Khanum as he thought about his past. Before he was known as the angered warlord, Kahnum, he was a small boy named Xavier.

He was born to a merchant. His mother and father took pride in their trade. His mother, Eris, would stay in their hometown of Morbridge keeping up with the shop, and customers. While his father, Lawrence, loved traveling Zyfinda's many vast lands to find new things to sell, and to see what the lands had to offer. It was a peaceful life, during the colder parts of the year the family would stay in that small town working in the shop every day till the weather got warmer.

When the hot days of summer came around, his father would take him for a few months to learn the ways of his father's work and to see Zyfindas' many cultures. From the deserts of the Tatire kingdom to the lush green meadows of Juro's forests. Xavier loved those long summers.

While on one of their trips Xavier and Lawrence stopped at a small village. Lawrance allowed him to roam around the small village as he began to trade and catch up with a few of his old business partners at the market.

While exploring the edge of the village, Xavier was running around winding through the tall trees and long grass. He spotted a small cave near the end of a creek. Curious, he enters the confined space and finds it filled with glowing flowers and flowing water. He went in deeper and figured out the cave grew and he could stand up straight. The area he found was bigger than he expected. More of the flowers and the water he found led to a glowing pond in the corner of the cave. Xavier had an idea and quickly started digging through his bag to find his journal.

When he acquired his journal and his charcoals; He started to sketch the various glowing flowers as best he could see using the light from the brilliant flora. Just as he went to write about the flower, a splash was heard behind him. Xavier felt he was being watched, his heart raced. He quickly jumped around and unsheathed a small but sharp dagger his father gifted him, and pointed at the sudden noise.

"Who's there? I'm armed so don't try anything funny!" Xavier called out as his voice echoed off the walls back to him. Then he heard a short giggle. He was puzzled, that was not the response he was expecting.

He walked to the glowing pool of water and turned around in circles trying to find the source of the voice. Just as his back turned to the water, Xavier felt himself getting pulled into the water. He started to panic but felt the nothing on him.

Still holding his breath, he opened his eyes under the water and was surprised to find a girl around his age. He couldn't hold his breath any longer, shaking his head Xavier swam back to the surface taking in a deep breath of cool air. The water drained from his ears and was met with the sound of laughter.

"I got you good, you should have seen your face!" The little girl laughed. Xavier turned to the girl red-faced.

"That's not funny, You're lucky you surprised me I could have hurt you!" He exclaimed rubbing his eyes from the water to get a better look at the girl.

She had fair skin and messy red hair. She had a bright smile and seemingly glowing green eyes. Suddenly his face was red for a different reason. But Xavier was stunned to see a long scar across her right eye. She noticed him looking at her face too closely and frowned.

"It's rude to stare ya know," She said turning her back and getting out of the water. Xavier had a sense of guilt run through him, he quickly jumped out of the water; blurting out an apology.

"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to stare. I was just..I mean I was..." Xavier trailed off as the girl looked a little mad at his words. Just as she went to walk away Xavier blurted out another question, this time with a softer tone.

"How'd it happen?" He asked as he watched the girl froze.

"Nothing bad, I just had a run-in with a Dragon..." She lied with a Cheshire grin as she sat down at the edge of the pond. Xavier rolled his eyes and joined her.

"Liar, you would look worse than that" he smiled as she looked at him and couldn't help but smile. Then for a moment she frowned again.

"You're right. Since you've stayed by me this long I'll tell you" She says and she began to tell her story.

When she was just a month old her mother and sister were moving to a new town to start a new life for her. Her father had died during a battle with bandits and feared the town was no longer safe. So when they were going through the Dark Marshed of Deir, they were attacked by the creatures of the night. They fought hard but she was caught in the crossfire.

"Whoa," Xavier awed at the little girl.

The girl was named Tara. Tara's family would travel to the town each year to harvest the glowing flowers in the cave for their healing properties. Xavier shared that he came here every summer to meet up with his dad's old friends. The pair shared stories of their travels and time seemed to slip away from them. Soon Tara heard he sister calling for her.

"I gotta go, it must be sundown!" Tara says

but before Xavier can talk, He hears his father's voice calling for him too.

Xavier felt deflated. After all in all the years he has traveled around she was the first real friend he's made in a long time.

Just as Tara got up to run off, he grabbed her arm.

"Tara, I have an idea!" Xavier beamed. She looked a little confused at her new friend but gestured for him to go on.

"Since we come here every year, let's agree to meet in this cave every year to catch up and share more stories?" He suggested. Tara took only a moment before breaking out into a wide smile.

"Sounds like fun! I bet I'll have more exciting stories to tell you next year" She taunted Kahnum narrowed his eyes.

"I bet I will have the most exciting one just wait!" Xavier declared before the pair shook hands and bolted out different sides of the cave.

Just then Khaum's minions had ruined the memory as they rushed in calling out his name. Khanum sighed leaving the memory but started to listen to his minions lead.
