Chapter 48 - The Earth’s Corruption

Both Mephiles and Lenora were very close friends for a very long time; their relationship started so long ago. It had little to no effect on their relationship as they lived in the castle. The castle of Midland belonged to the Demon Wolf, and no other could claim it from him. Lenora was a vampire, yet she served the king for as long as she could; she did so as a friend and as a commander. Mephiles loved the vampire, but he was too afraid to say it aloud to her.

A few hours later, Naberius got drunk again, and he wandered around the halls about his new plan. He already shared it with his comrades in the council; they all agreed to his words. Everyone agreed they should continue the war accordingly and strategically. He walks in the main hall with an idea so vivid that his mind would explode at the sound of it. An ordinary person would agree that the demon general lost his sanity while thinking about these things.

But in the minds of demons, the idea was splendid, and it would work extremely well. There is no doubt that Naberius has grown too attached to his own merits and his own feeble mind. He walked around in the castle until he realized he could share this information with the king's most trusted adviser. Little did he know, the diplomatic vampire was not as peaceful as she would appear. The demon general made sure nobody watched him walking to Lenora's room to have a word with her.

Thankfully, Mephiles already returned to his study, and he remains by himself until the midnight moon appears in the sky. For whenever the evening comes, Mephiles would be on the balcony awaiting new enemies to make. The earth was already filled with twice as much tyranny and despair ever since he won Midland's throne. Naberius noticed the vampire's chamber had an extra room that appeared larger than Lenora's actual room. He walks inside that room, only to be met with sounds of random people calling for help.

These horrific noises were as if many screams of men and women were surrounding dark clouds and black voids. The dark embrace could be seen in Lenora's room, and the demon general was not expecting something like this. Through a brief glimpse, Naberius could see Lenora talking to a dark spirit being surrounded by a cloud of souls. The spirit was none other than Death; he was giving the vampire what seems to be a black hilt for a longsword. Naberius quickly ran out of the dark room and walked back inside Lenora's regular room.

The vampire turned around and looked at the demon general being afraid of the grim reaper. The reaper of souls returned to the shadows after giving Lenora what was promised to her. She knew she was being followed, and she wondered why it would not be Naberius who was stalking her. She returns to her room and notices the demon general gazing at the paintings on her walls. Naberius gives Lenora an unaccustomed eye other than how he wanted to look at her.

"I don't recall inviting you across my threshold, Naberius. Because you're part of this council, I figured you might show a little more respect," Lenora said.

"Oh, I knew from the beginning that we would get along just fine. This has nothing to do with how much we knew each other. This is the business of how we should continue this conquest," Naberius said.

"And I know I already told you we are hardly losing. But judging from the look on your face, you seem to have other assumptions. You seem to think I'm not doing my job properly," she said.

"I know full well that you know how to do your job. But we have other problems before us. We have newer enemies in the world and barely enough time to wait for the king to make his command."

"Of all people, Mephiles knows what to do. Otherwise, he would not be your king and this kingdom would still be in the wrong hands."

"To be quite honest, Godbrand is making sense to me."

"In what way?"

"There's no actual plan. Mephiles doesn't act on our recommendations. He listens to you more than anyone. We're just thrashing around the lands randomly."

"We don't need strict battle plans every single time. You simply follow orders and do as he says."

"If I need to remind you once more about this, I'm not sure what I should do. Lagertha made herself victorious against one of our stronger servants and upgraded Clegane's defenses."

Everything Naberius said about the Wolf Queen was true; she was growing stronger every night. Soon, she will have enough strength in her soul to take over the kingdom of Midland and likely defeat the Demon Wolf. Lenora goes to the closest chair and sits on it as Naberius continues his vent. The vampire started growing impatient while hearing the demon general's words, and her nails grew. She was getting very exhausted from hearing the same issues with the Wolf Queen and how outnumbered they might be.

"Lagertha is a spoiled child. She is nothing," Lenora said.

Then Naberius said to her, "True, but she is Mephiles's daughter and just as strong. I believe it is time that we move on and decide for ourselves. Do it right, upgrade our defenses, and make all of our foes submit to us. Our time is growing short, our king's strength is getting thin, and our numbers are weakening because of the Wolf Queen. It's about time we should make the choices ourselves and leave the king in his study. We'll succeed, be victorious, and take this world for our own... without him."

But as he said this, Lenora looked down at herself and began having her vampiric power take a hold of her. She was always loyal to Mephiles and never wished to dishonor him in his kingdom. It was rather clear that she would kill anyone who would disobey the king and go against his orders. She closes her eyes and gets more powerful than even the strongest of Mephiles's servants. Her diplomatic appearance could still be seen in front of Naberius, yet her inner nature became inhuman.

"You would betray your king?" Lenora asked.

"It's not betrayal... unless the old man decides to be difficult about it," Naberius said. The demon general got close enough to her face to make her hear that; he made sure she kept those words in her mind.

He then turns around to walk away and carry on with the rest of the day, but he could not escape so easily.

"I see," Lenora said. She watches him walk to the door, and her nails were sharp enough to tear through steel.

Without hesitation, the vampire dashes behind Naberius and grabs him by the neck, and she keeps him pinned. Lenora's vampirism was too strong for the demon general; her mind and will be stronger than any night creature. As the nails on her right hand pierced the demon's side, the nails on her left hand were ready to tear Naberius apart. In a blink of an eye, Lenora uses her left hand and rips out the demon's larynx. His throat had blood come rushing out, and the front of his body had so much gore staining the vampire's floor.

Lenora drops Naberius to the ground, and she watches him struggle for breath and struggle to say a word. The vampire drops the larynx on the ground, and she pins the weak demon to make him have a taste of his own blood. There was nothing left of the once-powerful demon general; just an enormous mass of blood and flesh. Lenora turns Naberius's back to make him have a good look at her before he dies. She wanted her face to be the last thing he sees before he returns to the gates of Hell.

"Thank you for reminding me that the corruption of the world has entered Mephiles's court. Thank you for showing me the truth," Lenora said. Then Naberius lifts his hand to see if he can touch the vampire's face and tear it off.

But the diplomat snaps his right hand and pulls out a black dagger, and she makes a massive line on the demon's chest. She witnesses the blood and gore ending up all over the floor and the walls. Without hesitation, Lenora's hand enters that giant bloody line and rips out the demon's heart. The vampire squeezes the heart so that all the liquid will end up on Naberius's face. She showed no mercy and had no fear as she killed a traitor in Mephiles's court.

Lenora had nothing else to do and nowhere else to go as she would be constantly reminded of the Wolf Queen's presence.
