Chapter 33 - Regrah's Turning Point

The radiant moon shines through the lawless town of Regrah as the wealthy and nobles have gathered together to welcome their new District Commander.

They hoped that with the arrival of this person, the town will be saved.

It was the size of a city, but due to the subtraction of the lawless areas within the district, the size of the residential area of the fewer population that were law-abiding and wealthy was that of a town.

It was not until five years after the current situation that the town steadily grew to the size of a full city or district.

The carriage carrying the District commander stopped at the city square, where the banquet is being held.

One of the knights that accompanied the carriage opened the door for the new District commander.

The people cheered until a woman got out of the carriage.

"Huh?"

"A girl? Is this some kind of joke?"

The once joyful cheers of the citizens were replaced with tantrums and bickering upon the arrival of a girl not more than sixteen years of age.

"Does the kingdom take us for fools to send a little girl to save this town?"

The bickering continued as a young Conroy swiftly maneuvers himself through the crowd swiping off jewelry from the rich as the perfect diversion was created for him.

"Go away!"

"We refuse to be ridiculed by the King!"

"A little girl as our leader? blasphemous!"

The crowd began throwing food at the lady.

"Protect the commander!"

At first, the knights stepped in and shielded her with their bodies.

"Don't..." With her cold and calm voice, she stopped the knights, as they moved out of the way.

Conroy had his shirt filled with items as he witnesses the sight of the new District commander being ridiculed by the masses.

"Tck, I can't wait to get out of here."

He made his way back to Haggis.

The people however stopped their assault after all the food items that they prepared for their banquet were finished up with most of it slobbered on the body of the lady.

She pulled out a handkerchief and wiped her face clean.

The people were expecting her to get back into the carriage and ride away but to their surprise, her eyes glowed and she teleported a few meters to the side.

She was now completely clean as she had only teleported herself and her clothes, leaving all the food that got on her body to splatter on the ground.

She then bows her head and begins to address the people.

"My name is Lady Serena Vancamp."

The bickering of the people continued only this time, it wasn't to spite her

"Vancamp?"

"The Vancamp as in from the house of Vancamp."

"A family of expert mercenaries and this little girl is one of them."

It was at this moment that they realized they were too quick to judge her.

"We all become the kings and queens of our own destiny. We are all called by that higher power to do what is right, good, and kind. And at times, as with my own experience, the scope of the task is overwhelming if you see it all at once."

They all went silent as they listened to her attentively.

"This District is in ruins and it is my sworn duty to save it from all the plagues surrounding it."

She then teleported once again, but this time to the middle of the crowd.

"Far better, I found, to show a willingness to tackle it as countless small tasks that build to form the shape of your life. Legends are as fine garments, created one stitch or woven thread at a time, yet with some vision and plan for the garment you desire."

She bows her head once again and continued.

"Alas, I can not do this alone. This is why I beseech you all that we work together towards each stage to rebuilding this city with love because that is what the entire future will be fashioned from, come the time that our children and their children after them roam the streets of a bustling city. And we can only pray that we have enough time to do maximal good."

A brief silence took over as she finished only to be replaced by the loudest cheers the citizens have made thus far.

They all went on their knees and apologized for their discriminating behaviors and all rushed back to their homes to once again prepare for another banquet.

"My necklace!"

That was when the crowd began to realize that some of their belongings were nowhere to be found.

"My sack of gold!"

"My bracelet!"

Cries of distress filled the area as one by one, people began to cry out for their lost items.

Back at the shaggy building owned by Haggis.

"Hahaha, well-done lad, I didn't know ye were this skilled."

He pats Conroy on the back.

"Ye can even be an archer with such dexterity and a lil' training."

Conroy looks up at the man and stretches his arms out.

"Whats this lad?"

"You promised to set me free and give me money."

"Hahahaha."

Haggis plumped to the floor while holding his stomach hopelessly trying to control his laughter.

"Ye really thought I was going to set ye free?" He knocked Conroy aside with a backhand.

"I never planned on keeping my side of the bargain lad, most especially now when I know how useful you can be with your masterful dexterity Haha."

Conroy's eyes were filled with tears.

The only thing worse than despair is despair after hope.

Haggis gave Conroy the impression that his suffering could be put to an end. He didn't want to steal from all those people as they have done nothing to him but he had to if he wanted to be free.

But now, the wicked Haggis had revealed that he was never going to set him free and he plans on making use of Conroy's "talented fingers".

"Excuse me, are you Haggis?"

The two turned around towards the direction of the door where the voice came from.

It was Serena and her knights who have arrived here.

"Yeah, what do ye missy want with ol' Haggy?"

She nods at her knights and they tackled him.

"You're under arrest for partaking in child abuse and trafficking. Don't bother pleading innocent because one of the children you sold off happened to become a servant at my household. She told me all about your devious deeds."

Conroy just stood there not believing the turn of events.

Serena turned to the boy and offered him a hand. She rarely puts a smile on her face, but the warm smile present on her face made Conroy forget about his pain and suffering for a moment.

"Hy, I'm Serena, your new District commander. You don't have to worry about that evil man anymore. What's your name?"

Conroy couldn't help it as he hugged her while crying out.

"Sniff sniff. My name is Conroy, Lady Serena."
