"I did not kill your father. Can you just put the gun down and let me explain?"
I said to her as I raised my two hands up
"What is there to explain huh? You were the last person he met before his death. You do know you are wanted right now for his death right? I can just request for backup now and get you thrown behind bars but I'll get my answer first before that happens." She said in a taut voice still pointing the gun towards me with dark eyes.
She was obviously outraged and could act on impulse anytime. I needed to get myself out of the life threatening situation and at the same time I didn't know where to start from. I didn't want it to look like I was just coming up with excuses.
"I swear, I didn't kill your father. I didn't even know him until that day. He came to me sounding distressed like he was being chased by some people. He gave me some information which is why I'm being tagged as a murderer now because what I have in my possession is a big threat to them. Genaid killed your father because he didn't give them what they wanted."
She gave a sardonic smile and started laughing scornfully.
"You know, if you want to lie to save your sick ass, you should come up with a better idea. You mean to tell me that my father who worked for Genaid for twenty one years was murdered by that same company? Really? Do you know how close my dad was with the CEO? They were best friends. Mr Ralph is my godfather for crying out loud!"
She shot the gun into the ground as she shouted. The atmosphere because intense and I knew that moment that I was in a serious trouble that might be difficult to get out of.
"I have proof. I can show it to you. Please just let me show it to you then you could decide on what to do." I said to her desperately
I had prepared my mind for the worst but I never imagined it to be like that.
"What do you have to show me? It had better be worth it or I'll blow your head off. You are already a fugitive and nobody knows your identity. It will be much easier for me to dispose you than making pancakes for breakfast."
"I do not have it here with me. I sent it to someone incase I never made it back. I could call her and have her come here with it now." I said again
"You definitely won't be making it back if all these turns out to be lies and how do I know you aren't just trying to call for reinforcement huh?"
"I swear I'm not. You could take me hostage if that will make you believe me."
"Bring out the phone and kick it to me." She commanded
I did as she said. She picked it up still not taking her eyes off me with the gun pointed to me.
"Who are you calling?" She asked
"Sarah" I answered
She dialed Sarah's number. Sarah picked almost immediately
"Oh my God, Alex. I'm glad you are fine. I was just about to call you. How did it go?" Sarah asked
"Sarah, I need you to come here now with the drive I sent to you today. The drive, files, everything we've got so far on Genaid." I told Sarah
"What do you mean by everything Alex?"
She paused and shouted in a high pitch voice
"Alex! Are you okay? Are you taken hostage?"
The police officer cuts in
"Listen to me Sarah. You are going to come here now with everything you have or I'm going to blow your friend's head off. So what's it going to be?"
"I'll be there! I'm coming!"
"You are going to tell me everything you know before your friend comes" she said
I explained everything that happened so far and I saw her countenance starting to change. She was struggling between what she thought was true and what she was afraid might be true. It would have been easier if she could pin it on me but realizing it was someone closer to her made it feel unbearable. At that point, I just pitied her.
Sarah came and I showed her the files and everything we had gathered.
"What you are telling me now is that Genaid Pharmaceuticals killed my father? They..they killed those people?" She was trembling in voice and body. Tears filled her eyes as she dropped on the floor.
"Wait, did my dad also make the Thypoin 2006 virus?" She asked with a face hoping it wasn't true
"I'm sure it wasn't his intention to get it used the way they used it but yes, I think he made it." I answered softly.
She sobbed more as she placed a hand on her chest. She must have felt her heart ache. People who never experienced such sorrow would never understand that your heart could ache from emotions. It feels like it's going to pop out of your chest. I felt the same way when my mom died right before my eyes.
"I'm sorry." That was the only thing I could say that moment to her
"No I should apologize"
She said as she wiped her tears and stood up from the ground. Her eyes were bloodshot
"I suspected you without enough evidence. I believed everything they said like a fool and just followed them blindly." She said in a wobbly voice
"You has every right to do so. Your dad was murdered. Anyone would do the same."
"You should really run along. I texted my boss before coming here. Told him to come with backup in an hour. They should be here anytime from now. I'm so sorry. I was just going to get information from you and turn you in." She said bursting into tears again
We started hearing police siren from a distance. Sarah and I rushed into the car. I kicked start the engine, it went off again. My hands were shaking as I tried to grab the key to start it again. I kept looking out and around as I tried to start the engine again.
"What are we going to do Alex, they are getting close." Sarah said panicking
"I'm not going to get caught, at least not today." I said to myself
I grabbed the bag Sarah brought containing the files.
"We have to run or hide somewhere." I said to Sarah
We suddenly heard a gunshot as we got out of the car. I paused in shock and turn around to look.
The police officer shot herself.
