Chapter 14 - WORKING WITH THE ENEMY

Sarah and I froze in shock for a second. The police must have heard the shot, I thought to myself . We quickly ran towards her where she was lying.

"Oh my God! Why did you do this?" Sarah shouted nervously

"How was I suppose to explain to them that you escaped. I just shot myself in the arm, it's a flesh wound, nothing serious. Now run! Unless you really want to end up behind bars!" She shouted as she groaned in pain, holding the hand she had shot.

Sarah and I ran off jittering in fear. We hid behind one of the containers in the dark. We couldn't escape as the police van was already at the scene. They would sense our movement easily if we tried to run. We could only pray and wait they leave before escaping.

I heard the captain ordering the other police officers to search everywhere for us.

"Someone call the ambulance"! He shouted again in a loud angry voice

Sarah was panicking and I had to cover her mouth with my hand to stop her from making a noise.

"We will be fine, we will get past this." I whispered gently to her hoping it will make her calm down.

After minutes of searching, they finally left and we could breathe again. Sarah and I ran as far as we could. We found our way back to the warehouse where I was hiding.

"Who would have thought that you once counseled his daughter?" Sarah asked talking out of breath

"What did you counsel her for?" She asked again

"I might not be the regular counselor everyone knows but you know it's against our oath of confidentiality to disclose our client's condition" I said gulping down a bottle of water.

"We are still talking about confidentiality after all that's happened?"

"Trust me, what I counseled her on has nothing to do with the issue on ground right now. Moreover, she's a police officer. We could use her help." I replied

"Don't tell me you are planning on dragging her into this! Did you see how she pointed the gun at you back there? She's like a ticking bomb that could explode anytime. I can't work with someone that impulsive. She even shot herself for crying out loud!" Sarah argued

"To save us". I replied again

"How come she's still even on the case that involves her dad?"

"I'm sure she didn't tell her boss about it or the fact that she was coming to see me. She probably just told them she had a lead on something. With the way her boss sounded angry she must have told him then just when he got there."

"Still not working with her" Sarah mumbled

"So, did you find anything?" I queried

"Yes I found you almost getting shot in the head"

"Look Sarah, I know you are pissed about the whole thing. I'm sorry I put you in danger. Everything happened so fast."

"This isn't about me Alex, it's about you. I told you not to go. I told you it was too dangerous but you wouldn't listen. I know you want to get this people so bad. I also do. But if you keep acting like this, you might end up dead before even getting anywhere."

"I'm sorry okay, I'll be careful from now on. I promise"

"I found something" Sarah said in a low tone

"Yes! I knew you would" I said with a satisfactory smile, sitting beside Sarah

"He hid it so well only an IT expert could find it but I couldn't make much sense of what it was. It was some sort of formulas"

Sarah clicked on the folder. It was all formula of different kinds. I didn't know what it was for but I knew it had something to do with Genaid.

"Whatever this is, I'm sure it's so important to Genaid and we need to find out what it is before they find us." I said to Sarah bringing out my phone from my pocket

"What are you doing?" Sarah asked with a stern look

"Texting the police officer. She must have heard something from her dad or seen something"

"Seriously Alex? Do you even know if she has her phone with her? She got shot! She's probably in the OR right now getting the bullet out of her arm".

"Okay, we'll wait till tomorrow then"

"And what are you calling to tell her huh? I found some of your dad's formula, could you be kind enough to tell us what it is?"

"Erm...yes?" I said

"Do you think scientists go about telling people about their researches? Their families sometimes don't even know where their lab is. I even hid programs I was developing from my dog back in the day."

"I didn't know you had a dog" I said teasingly

"Don't try to change the topic" Sarah said rolling her eyes

"I think you just been paranoid."

"After what I saw this evening? I'm definitely gonna be paranoid... for a long time". Sarah said with a dissatisfied look

"It won't hurt to ask. She might have overheard something or saw something. People leave traces of things they do. I'm sure she knows something." I argued again

"I'm telling you Alex, this is going just going to bring us more trouble"

"I'll text her by tomorrow. She should be out of the operating room by then." I said as I yawned

I stood up to lay on the couch when my phone beeped. It was the police officer.

"Where are you? I need to know more." She wrote in the text. I jumped from couch. Sarah turned back in curiosity

"She just texted me."I said facing Sarah

"What did she say?" She asked

"She asked where I was"

"Okay...so?" She asked again

"So, I'll tell her. I was going to text her tomorrow anyway. The earlier we can ask her the better"

"So, you will bring her here?! Sarah shouted with a widened eye

"She deserves to know everything too. Her dad died!" I replied

"As far as I know, you are still a fugitive framed for her dad's death. She could still rat you out to her friends after getting the information she wants. All I saw in her eyes back there was revenge! I've been there and I know what it feels like." Sarah said again

"If we are going to talk about revenge, I think I should be on top of the ladder. These people killed my parents and now framing me for a murder of someone I do not know! If I have to join hands with my enemy to get back at them for what they did, I will!"

"For the first time in a while Alex, I'm not with you on this one but then I only lost my job, you lost your parents and freedom. Guess you really are on top of the ladder. Suit yourself." She said as she turned back to the computer in front of her.

I understood where Sarah was coming from and I knew she was just looking out for me. But I wasn't going to run away like I did 16 years ago. I was ready to do anything to get to the bottom of this.

I texted the police officer the address.

"Can you please just try and cooperate when she comes? For my sake please?" I begged Sarah

"Sure, why not. But I'm definitely not going to cooperate if she shows up again with a gun. I'm no shooting target paper for anyone to practice their skills"

"No one is getting shot" I reassured

"Says someone who almost got his brain blown off an hour ago" Sarah mumbled again

"She should be here tomorrow, be nice" I said to Sarah as I laid down on the couch to sleep.

Sarah woke me up twenty minutes later to tell me my phone beeped. It was a text message. I sprung from the couch when I read the text.

"I'm here" the text read

"She's here!" I exclaimed

"Who's here?" Sarah asked absentmindedly still working on the computer

"The police officer"

Sarah turned back immediately with a shocked look

"She's here? How? I told you this wasn't a good idea Alex. Did she recover in hours? How is this even possible?" Sarah lamented

"Shhhh. I see a police van" I said quietly as I peeped through the window

"My God! She ratted us out!"
