Chapter 297 - Turned In Or Turn Out?

"I got to say, this food is very bloody good." Lero spoke of the seared chicken and rice, looking at the father and son.

More hours had passed since the sight of fire, and while Ben and Henry had not spoken or even brought up the earlier events, didn't mean Lero was not as watchful as ever. For all he knew, betrayal was still inevitable and made him still at risk. For that reason, did he not let his guard down. He couldn't just truly trust them yet.

"Ah thanks, Henry's cooking has been perfected while I've been working away from home." Ben gave his thanks to his son, as they were all seated at the small kitchen table.

"It's fine, it's a good skill to have." the boy gave a thumbs up, before stuffing another mouthful of rice.

They seemed happy, which hopefully would make things better for Lero and his chances of staying on their good side. He could only imagine years ago, his demeanor would have been more lax and calm, but the prison had done many things to his body and mind. Now, he was sharper than ever and more aware of the signs of his host.

"Say, you claimed to be a doctor, what type of work do you do?" Lero eventually asked as he was close to finishing his food.

"Oh yes, I did say that, didn't I? I work for the local hospital, Appleridge Regional. We care for thousands of people outside of the capital in just a week alone. It's always very busy, but my work is incredible, I must say." Ben started to chuckle. "With my many years of expertise and abilities, I was always going to be some of the best in the entire area, although some may argue the entire nation."

"Wow, that does make a lot of sense, you have my thanks."

"Of course, it's what all doctors in our profession should stand for. Now, that the small talk has gone on long enough, it's time to discuss what to really do with you."

This was the announcement Lero was waiting for. Fixing his posture, Lero stared into the eyes of Ben, who remained focused onto his face, while also taking a quick glance at Henry. The boy was looking at the two men with much interest, waiting to see what would happen next.

"You seem like a good person, I must assume that, but considering the fact that you are of "interest" to the Reserve Guard, makes us all a threat to potentially getting arrested. No one here wants any type of trouble with them." Ben's tone turned serious.

"I understand that, everyone here seems like good people."

"Which is why, I believe it would be best if you do leave the premise as soon as you're healthy enough."

"That, I can agree and do as soon as possible." Lero felt his side, before wincing.

"It may be about a week or so more, but as long as you stay indoors and do as instructed, you'll be okay. Although, while I haven't brought it up yet, we all know of the sight we've witnessed outside."

"You're talking about the fireball?" Henry questioned.

"Indeed I am." Ben nodded, "If that was done by none other than Jamal Wrint, then it could only explain the increased military presence within the city. Those rebel forces are slowly closing in, and a battle among the outskirts could commence any day now. Even though that's only five miles away from here, I would not be surprised if Reserve Guards return to this area in order to keep us protected. You're not associated with that group now, are you?"

"Oh no, I'm now hearing all about this now." Lero lied, but continued the act, "I'm quite positive Jamal's power is on bloody par with Youden's, from what I've heard though, so that's not very good."

"Nonsense, Youden's abilities and ways of strength far outmatch the boy's manipulation of fire. I've heard from the accounts of others of such a difference when they actually had an encounter back in the capital. He stands no chance."

"That's very good then, we have little to worry about in the case that happens again." Lero sighed in fake relief.

If they actually did fight again and was a much different outcome compared to the stories of their first fight in Port-O-Bea, then Jamal might really not be as strong as he was claimed to be. Unless, it was another lie Youden was spreading around, which was being eaten up by the minute. He still had to hold some type of hope for Jamal to do his thing. He still believed in him after all.

"Anyways, now with an understanding of what happens from here, you'll remain to the couch unless food is provided or other needs are to be taken care of. Any type of betrayal or aggression with me or my son especially will result in you being handed to the proper authorities, and no one wishes for that now. Am I clear?"

"Yes, I'm very grateful." Lero gave a gulp, just to make things more believable.

"Alright, in that case, Henry, please help our guest to his bed once he's ready for the night. Everyone will be okay after this all ends, sooner or later."

"Yes, Father." Henry watched as the man got up and collected the dishes, "Do you need help to get to the bathroom?"

"Ah, probably not." Lero started to push his chair back and stand before the pain returned quickly, "Bloomin' wonders! I think not. Yeah, I'll need that after all."
