'honey, will you be home tonight?' Amber asked through the phone.
Jasper sighed. 'I want to. I should get out of the office around 9:00 pm. Would you fancy some dinner then?' he asked sarcastically. He hoped his humor would be enough to make her stay in a relationship with a guy that was almost always absent.
Amber didn't answer. She was clearly annoyed. Sometimes silence speaks way louder than words can.
'I want to make it up to you.' Jasper said, reading her silence. 'shall we get brunch tomorrow?'
'its friday hun. You should not have to stay at the office on a friday.'
'comes with my job.'
'and with mine. Honestly, do you think I could not stay the hours that you put in also working on the proejcts we have?'
'its not the same'
'it definitely is the same Jaspt. It's priorities converzation. You clearly value work much more than my company. Or your sister;'s for that matter. Have you spent time with your sister appart tha one time you saw her because she was moving in with you? I doubt it.'
Jasper kept quiet because she had a point. He had not really seen Olivia since Wednesday.
'I hear you.' he said.
'well, then do somehting.' she said. Amber hang up after that. Making a statement.
Jasper stood there holding the phone close to his chest. Wondering when did his life go so off the rails. Wondering since when did he prefered not actualyl having a life - because he thought overworking was a way to saving it. What was it that he was so afraid of not measuring up to if he left? was it concerned of the sudden shift in the way his loved ones would see him? he didn't know. For now, he just held the phone close to his chest as he starred at the empty space in silence.
