Chapter 36 - Chapter Thirty-Six - Betrayal

We ran from that thing, pain shot up my arm, but the chill in the air made it easy to ignore the throbbing spasms emanating from the wound. The feeling was different to that of the minotaur, where that monster was intimidating, it at least acted in accordance to its mythological counterpart, but this other creature seemed alien, wholly unnatural. It was easy to fear it, Isaac's reaction said everything and I felt my body's reaction tell me the same thing. I turned to see the creature looming in the darkness, prowling forwards, its eyes were composed of swirling dust and a grin that twitched erratically. Its horrifying features seemed to float in the darkness, its body only visible to one looking for it. I turned back around, feeling that pressure in the air weighing down on me like an increase of gravity becoming stronger the longer I locked eyes with it. Hans led the way, but he seemed to be suffering from something, his hand was glued to his head, as if trying to smother a fire that dwelled within. Isaac and Jacob were close behind as they were the two most fit. They rounded another corner and Jason, the old man and I followed. I looked into a branching corridor seeing other mythological beasts from Greek myth fleeing from us, no, fleeing from it.

"This way," Hans muttered as we turned another corridor. Harley twisted his head to the creature and swore.

"It hasn't got any closer or any further away from us. Fuckers playing with us." I saw Isaac shudder in response to Harley's words.

"This -" Hans began, but stopped as Jacob swore aloud as he grabbed Jason and Isaac and pulled them into an adjoining corridor as a blur and spray of mist tore down the hallway. At the corner of my eye, I saw their forms continue in their haste to flee. But the creature didn't make any attempt to follow, instead it just stood in front of us, cocking its head to the side, its swirling eyes containing something more than just dust. Flecks of blood mixed with its ever rotating eyes and its wide grin was splattered with gore. I turned away from it, seeing a carpet of blood, viscera and bone leading to where the monster stood. It stared at us with those horrifying eyes and neither of us moved. In response, the creature just cocked its head once again, keeping its head at a slight off kilter angle. I stole a glance towards the corridor that the three men had fled down, seeing only darkness.

I turned to Jacob, and saw only him. The beast wasn't following anymore. I turned back around and swallowed uncomfortably. I'm sorry, Levin, Jason. I know you would sacrifice yourselves for this world. But, I hope you manage to escape. In response to the words I told myself, I still felt the accompanying guilt of murdering my two friends. I really hope you manage to survive.

"Turn around, he's still there!" I yelled at the screen, not caring about the handcuffs that bit into my flesh like a shark wanting to feed. Isaac, why? You said they were your friends, why did you do nothing! "Jacob! Turn around, Save them! Save Henry, he's still out there!" I could sense someone watching me through the door, but I didn't turn to look. "Isaac! You fucking coward!"

Sweat rolled down my face as I locked eyes with the creature. The hairs on my arms stood at attention, my senses on overdrive, my head aching from the visual feedback. I could feel the creatures every movement, my head taking it all in. Taking in the amount of swirling dust particles in its two eyes. I dared not move. I dared not breathe. I could hear the rise and fall of another's breathing behind me. Who was that ? Was that the boy or the older man ? I didn't want to take my eyes off of the creature, lest it kill us both.
