Chereads / Isekai: The Eight Soul Fragments / Chapter 120 - The Second Floor

Chapter 120 - The Second Floor

A few days after the incident where Remuel reawakened to his divinity, he had returned to Luventrion to further investigate the dungeon. He was interrogated by Victorina with the assistance of Lynx and Noelle to spit out why he brought another woman. After the grueling time of being forced to kneel down to reflect on his behavior, he was somewhat struggling to walk with his legs staying on resting state.

Presently, his relationship with Bethany was somewhat decided at that point that he can no longer complain against Victorina. However, he's resolved that he should act more familiarly with his current fiancés.

He was blankly staring at the entrance as he was reminded of what he was going to face. He was starting to space out but was quickly returned to reality when Bethany tapped his shoulder. "Remuel, we should enter now." Bethany was smiling, which made Remuel look away to avoid being seen blushing. The two then entered the dungeon and quickly made their way to the second floor.

Remuel inserted the cube on the pedestal, it was solved by Harold a few days ago and temporarily sealed it. The seal was only undone in the day Remuel returned so they decided to get with the dungeon immediately, to the point where they forgot about reporting the engagement to the king.

The door to the second floor opened grandly, which displayed a dark staircase downwards behind it. There was some ominous feelings at first, but Remuel quickly thought that pressing on would be ideal. He urged Bethany to stay behind him just in case of some troublesome enemies coming around. They then slowly started their descent to a deeper floor.

After a long way down, they arrived to a large opening which leads to the first puzzle. There was no door stopping them, which made Remuel suspicious and activated his detection magic as they entered the room. But as soon as the two entered deep enough into the room the door quickly shut down behind them.

"Tch! Already?!" Remuel looked around and could see a small tent covered in ragged cloth, a level could be seen from the inside of it which made Remuel think about what the lever is for. He activated his [Amalgam of Destiny] to provide Bethany wings for flight using [Amalgam of Bible] as he detected multiple monster presences around him.

"Bethany! I will use fire orbs to light up the room, look around if there is anything I should take note of!" With a hasty command, Remuel entered the tent and found a sign. He quickly read it as he felt the presences coming closer. "Help the man navigate out of the [Inverted City]... Wha..." He let out a confused voice as he exit the tent and looked around. He was only able to see monsters that have the anatomy of a human, but they were covered in kelp, and were wet from blood. "A death trap!" Remuel brought out his scythe and swung it around to start clearing some monsters out. It was then Bethany shouted out her findings. "The ceiling has a city, with a figure of a person upside down at the center!" When Remuel heard Bethany's description, he knew exactly what will happen. He quickly activated his magic to push away the monsters, but a black fog suddenly covered the entire floor, which caused Remuel to kneel down as if his strength was sapped.

"Shit..." He thought to himself, his mana was interrupted, causing the fire that was pushing back the monsters to be cut off. His scythe suddenly became heavier as he quickly returned to the tent. He then started to pull the lever to a direction which allows the human statue at the ceiling to move. "Guhh!!! Why is this so heavy now?!?!" Remuel complained about the strength required to pull the lever despite already knowing the reason. His strength was sapped as long as the barrier exists, but his artifact [Amalgam of Destiny] is unaffected. However, he wasn't able to take notice of that immediately on the heat of the moment.

"T-The person moved!" Bethany was providing backup by using light magic to purify the undead kelp zombies. With the movement of the statue, she quickly started to look for what they have to do as she figured out what the lever did.

"Bethany, look for a quick path out at the inverted city!" Remuel's information quickly gave her the full idea on what to do, she quickly looked for a route where the statue can leave the city easily. But since it was a city it took her a while as she guided Remuel.

The pair continuously repeated a set of moves, to repel the monsters, analyze the path out, and for Remuel to use his entire force to keep pulling a spring lever with less than half of his original strength. It was fortunate for them that there were no stronger monsters that appear around the area but after they solved the puzzle, Remuel realized something important. Around ninety-percent of the swamp monsters were erased in dust, leaving a small number of them left. It was then he realized that he was attacking illusions fiercely. As a result, he flopped down in sitting position and facepalmed. "Those illusions were so genuine..." He sighed and used magic to eliminate the rest. It was then Bethany finally landed down. "Great job Remuel, you look very tired." She sat down next to Remuel as he brought out cold water from his interdimensional storage. He chugged it down in one go.

"Pah! Give me a break, the illusions here are getting more genuine the deeper we go. At this point, we may be dealing with crazy stuff." Remuel sighed and ruffled Bethany's hair. "By the way, good job to you as well, being able to fight while guiding me there was very important. I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be finished alone by one person coming in and out of the tent but damn, I would've had a bad time without you." Remuel smile as he locked his gaze at Bethany, causing her to be bashful as she nodded in response. However, she felt very happy hearing that Remuel was being kind despite his sharp personality.

After resting for a little bit, the two went to proceed to the next room. They both felt a sudden heat trying to waver their concentration, but only Bethany was affected. Remuel offered her cold water which she quickly accepted.

After they entered the second room, they were quickly greeted by a large pool of lava and multiple pillars in between the entrance, and the exit. At the first row, closest to the entrance were twelve pillars, it slowly goes down until four pillars at the row closest to the exit. Bethany found the sign and read it for Remuel. "Each row has exactly three illusions. Take the three gemstones behind the sign to check whether a pillar is an illusion or not. But be careful as these gemstones can only be used once..." Remuel clicked his tongue in annoyance, since he wasn't the kind of person good at platforming. "I'm bad at these kinds of things..."

Remuel didn't exactly have a mood to do it the hard way, so he decided that they should just fly over with [Amalgam of Bible]. After clearing the room with zero effort, they quickly proceeded to the next one.

At first glance, the room was a lot wider than the previous rooms, which makes Remuel think that there's going to be something crazy going on. He summoned multiple fire orbs to light up the room, he then looked around once more and quickly saw two white guns that are modeled weirdly. However, Remuel has enough knowledge to start feeling nostalgic while he approached the two guns on the right side. "Portal gun, and gravity gun... Those guys needs to see this..." Bethany followed him from behind as she examined the two guns. She then asks Remuel regarding any knowledge about it. "Do you know these things?" Remuel nodded while smiling in nostalgia.

He started to explain the function of the two guns, but as Remuel realized, that both guns are currently broken. He looked to the other side and saw a pedestal holding another scrambled cube. However, this time it was a [5x5x5] version of it. "So there's basically nothing here, but we can't fly through this area to get the cube, the pedestal is surrounded by enhanced glass so I can't break it easily. However, there's a hole wide enough to place a portal behind the pedestal. The only issue is, there's a large cube in between the two guns and there are two large buttons where they can place the large cube, which seemingly opens the glass wall.

Remuel quickly understood what had to happen and took both the portal gun and gravity gun. "Bethany, let's head back to the castle, and we need to go for another stop at Preeliance." He beckoned her to join him back to the castle as he was in a great mood.
