Chapter 40 - It is afoot

"Monster hero" by Triton Marmoon

Wondrous is the fruitful mind,

adapting to austere conditions,

resigned without disobedience sign

to the reality imposing motions.

Severed the values that

once contained self-ruling,

for higher purposes arise

to dethrone one's being.

contrary to all expectations

one finds himself emerged

in unjustifiable plans.

For the right to be

who I must renounce.

I will be the monster hero!

The night came when we decided to wait no longer! An opportunity presented itself and we flew for the taking. Everything was prepared as much as it would ever be, we reviewed the plan twice the night before and tried to have a good day sleep to optimize our performance. I asked Sonya for a lift to the arranged place and she was waiting in the car outside.

I kissed my mother who looked at me with two ``don't leave me'' big blue shinning eyes.

- ``I will be back in a few hours, don't worry. There is nothing that bad that can happen to us. At most we can be put in jail, but as a minor I wouldn't stay long.'' - I laughed, I was hardly a minor, but law still distinguished under twenty-ones.

- ``Don't you dare! I want you back and in one piece.''

- ``See you dad.'' - He was sitting on his big dark brown leather chair and took his eyes of the long thin sheets with complex blue prints when I kissed his cheek. - ``Be careful and be safe and.... and good luck''

His skin was roughed by a stubble starting to show, it itched at my lips. I usually didn't like that, but today it brought a familiar touch I was scared to miss. - ``You too!''

- ``Sure!'' - His eyes fell from mine, as soon as the issue turned on him, back to his own plan and the papers at hand.

- ``Why do you both have to go? Can't the other take care of it?'' - My mother insisted, her voice strained without strength.

- ``They are no good!'' - My father smiled and winked at me, but his forehead wrinkled and his eye brows arched! He fought hard with mum to get her to agree on my participation and he wan pretending on a true belief that I could do it.

- ``Yes, we're the best they had! What the world came to, hum?'' - I answered, I guess he must have known I could do it or he wouldn't send me!

Sonya and I drove for half an hour before we picked the Dark Knight up. Sonya's eyes were big and defiant. She couldn't resist it.

- ``If I really need your help, would you?'' - I told her two nights ago.

- ``Of'course, what is it?''

- ``The issue is that you can't ask any questions!''

- ``Are we playing at something?''

- ``Most certainly not!'' - My graver tone stopped her laughter half way through her pipes.

- ``Are you OK? What happened?''

- ``Sonya, please. Do it for me. Do you trust me enough to help me and stay in the dark?''

- ``Why do I have to stay in the dark?''

- ``Because... I might need a lawyer afterwards!'' - It was the best excuse I could give and yet it fitted like a glove. I could hear her breath now, she was probably as greedy with the adventure of breaking the rules as wishful that those could never ruin the rest of her career or mine.

- ``Are you sure you want to? You never broke a rule in your life. You have been older than granny for as long as I've known you and you believe in rules and their practical function in society... and...'' - Her adult side won. Great, now I just had to make her forget the idea that misery loves company and that if she couldn't play I most certainly shouldn't.

- ``There comes a time, sometimes, when what you must goes against what you should or want to!''

- ``Hey, you are ruining it! How can you make school work out of crime? You have to flavor it! If you're going to put your head outside the window at least let your tongue loose and taste it!'' - She stopped to recover her responsibility. - ``Are you sure there is no legitimate way to do it?''

- ``Wish there was, but think of it as war in history books. If we win tonight we will become heroes. If we lose we will be told traitors of the nation.''

She laughed at the extreme description, ignorant of its accuracy. - ``You wouldn't do it for less. OK! What should I do?''

- ``We need your wheels! I can drive your precious, but I need to go from place A to B, no questions asked and in a perfect timing.''

- ``No way you're driving my baby! I'll drive!'' - the outrage of having her in the dark didn't beat that of asking for her baby for unknown business.

- ``Absolutely not! You shouldn't get implicated!''

- ``I won't! And that's the end of it, you want my help you will have to take me!''

By then I was glad to have someone at the wheel, so it would run smoother and faster. Also she is used to relaxed speeding and I wasn't. Nevertheless, today I was feeling rather guilty for not arguing further, until I would win this time. I don't know how long that would take since I never won an argument with her, but I should have tried harder. I owed her that much.

- ``So what is the plan?'' - She passed her agitated fingers over the wheel, grasping for composure in the accelerating rule-braking mode, probably reminding herself she wasn't breaking any law and thanking her car for the opportunity to at least participate in the adventure in a way.

- ``I brought the gps.'' - I took my father's gps out of my backpack, and lay it on my lap. I inserted my Dark Knight's coordinates and tilted it towards Sonya, so she could follow the instructions. I ringed him so he would know when to come and meet us at the defined coordinates.

Then I sent an sms to my mother's phone which was reluctantly accepted by Bleach Eyes for this particular occasion. He disagreed with the concept of leaching himself to electronic devices that controlled more of his life than they would ever contribute to. Nevertheless for the purpose of a successful mission he bent his rules to my father's beading. - ``The wolf is on wheels and racing to first bird.''

A thrill filled me as I moved my fingers through the keys and thought of the perfect words I never would have the opportunity to use again this way, seriously mission-codified.

We stopped on a dark cross road, where the gps marked with a flag, and searched around the short buildings that surrounded us for the Dark Knight. Few trees sprinkled the sidewalk with dim lights near the roots. From within the leaves of one, of those trees, behind us, a shadow fell and it rose dark, moving toward us. Within the shade a white smile levitated on our way.

- ``Weren't you supposed to look normal?''

- ``Noon! Sonya!'' - With a black turtle neck that didn't seem to end and part from his pants, which in turn covered most of the black army boots. He smiled at the driver dismissing my remark with an uncontrolled smile.

- ``Well, get in!'' - I jumped out to let him in and sent another text ``First bird collected, moving for second.'', this time to Spikes too.

So we moved to marker two, where a second shadow appeared next to the car door.

- ``WHAT? th' Hell!''

- ``Are you trying to kill me?'' - Sonya hit my forearm, because the shared fright was crucially enlarged by my sudden jump and scream.

tzzz... While I left the car, to allow passage to the Bleach Eyes that were fainted enough to not contrast totally with the dark alley where we were picking him up, my phone vibrated. - ``Horse in place, waiting for bishop and queen.'' from Spikes.
